Transactionof money, comparing lengths and weights, calculation of marks in percentage, etc., are the
areas where decimals are used in everyday life. The conversion of lower units of physical quantities like
length, weight, mass and also of money to their higher units involves the usage of decimals.

Comparison of Decimal Numbers
Tocompare decimal numbers follow the given steps.
1. Change the given decimal numbers to like decimal numbers.
2. Now compare the whole number parts. The number having greater whole number part is larger.

MULTIPLICATION OF DECIMALS
Decimals 35
Thus, 15.762 x 100 = 1576.2
15762 15762 x 100
Also, 15.762 x 100 = X 100 = -=1576.2
1000 10 00
Similarly, 8.975 x 1000 = 8975
8975 8975
Also, 8.975 x 1000 x 1000 = x 1080 = 8975
1000 1080
Thus, we conclude that when a decimal number is multiplied by 10, 100 or 1000, the digits in the
product are the same as in the decimalnumber but the decimal point in the product is shifted to the
right by as many places as there are zerosbeside 1 in the multiplier.
Forexample, 0.09 x 10 = 0.9

Remember when you multiply a number by 10,100,1000, 0.68 x 10 = 0.068 0.68 x 10=6.8
etc., the number will become larger.

ExAMPLE 4: One side of a regular hexagon is of measure 3.5 cm. Find its perimeter.
SoLUTION:All the six sides of a regular hexagon are equal.
.:. Perimeter of hexagon = 6 x 3.5 cm = 21.0 cm
Hence the perimeter of the hexagon is 21 cm.
EXAMPLE 5: The cost of 1 m cloth is 125.50. What will be the cost of 4m cloth?
SoLUTION: Cost of 1 m cloth =125.50 125.50
Cost of 4m cloth =125.50 x 4 x4
=502.00 502.00
Hence, the cost of 4 m cloth is 502.

Imagine a situation where youneed to buy 1.5 kg rice. But only a 5kg pack of rice costing 220.50 is

Thus,to solve such problems encountered daily, you need to know the division of decimal numbers.

1. Decimals are used in many ways in our lives. For example, the conversion of lower units of
physical quantities like length, weight, mass and also of money to their higher units involves
the usage of decimals.
2. Multiply the decimals as if they are whole numbers. Then, mark the decimal point in the product
leaving as many places to the right of decimal as is the sum of such places in the given decimals.
For example, 0.5 x 0.9 = 0.45.
3. When a decimal number is multiplied by 10, 100 or 1000, the digits in the product are the same
as in the decimal number but the decimal point in the product is shifted to the right by as many
places as there are zeros beside l in the multiplier.
For example, 0.87 x 10 = 8.7
0.87 × 100 87
0.87 x 1000 = 870
