Assignment 8 (Updated)

This document contains an assignment for an engineering thermodynamics course. It includes: 1) A cover page template for students to fill out with their names and section number. 2) Four multi-part thermodynamics problems involving concepts like heat transfer, work, processes and cycles. 3) Notes that the assignment must be submitted using the template, with groups of 1-3 same-gender students, and penalties for late or missing submissions.

1) A rigid tank contains 10 kg of air (as an ideal gas) at 350 kPa and 27oC. The air is now heated
until its pressure doubles. Determine the following:
a) The volume of the tank (m3).
b) The amount of heat transfer (kJ).
c) You are told that “the process is isentropic”. Is this statement valid? Justify your
answer.

2) A Carnot heat engine operates with steam on the cycle shown below. If the net specific
work output is 300 kJ/kg, then determine the quality of water at states 1, 3, and 4.

4) (Cycle) The figure below shows four devices operating at steady state: pump, boiler, turbine,
and condenser. For adiabatic and reversible operation of the pump and the turbine and neglecting
kinetic and potential energy effect, determine flowing:

1) Complete the following table for water

2) The required work by the pump, win in kJ/kg
3) The work developed by the turbine, wout in kJ/kg
4) The heat transfer to the boiler; qin in kJ/kg (1 pt)
5) The heat transfer out of the condenser; qout in kJ/kg
6) The efficiency of the cycle;
