ACTIVITY TITLE: Performance Task: Position Paper


LEARNING TARGET: The learners write a position paper with unity, coherence and cohesion, appropriate
language use, and mechanics with the use of supporting details to sustain their claims. They are critics who
evaluate a given issue by presenting one favorable side of an arguable opinion. The position paper is
presented to government officials to argue about the issue's ethical aspects.
CONCEPT NOTES: A position paper is a type of academic writing that presents one’s stand or viewpoint on a
particular issue. The main objective of writing a position paper is to take part in a large debate by stating an
argument and proposed course of action.
INSTRUCTIONS: Write a position paper. Support it with claims, reasons, and pieces of evidence. It is also
beneficial to write a counterclaim to tone down your claim.
Structure:
Introduction (minimum of one paragraph)
Body (minimum of two paragraphs – (1) claim, reason, and evidence (2) counterclaim, reason, and evidence)
Conclusion (minimum of one paragraph)

General Format:
Computerized
Letter-sized paper or 8.5x11
Times New Roman (12) or Arial (11)
Double-spaced
1-inch margin on all sides

(3) Another paragraph must be written for your counterclaim. It is better if it is supported with evidence

as well.

course of action. And, end with a powerful statement.
