Numerical Methods and Analysis - Nov. 23B

The document discusses Gaussian elimination and Gauss-Jordan elimination methods for solving systems of linear equations. Gaussian elimination uses the echelon form of a matrix while Gauss-Jordan elimination uses the reduced row echelon form. Several examples of using the methods on systems of linear equations are shown and solved step-by-step. Students are provided additional practice problems to solve using both Gaussian elimination and Gauss-Jordan elimination methods.

Gaussian Elimination and Gauss – Jordan

Elimination Method
Gaussian Elimination uses the echelon form of a matrix to solve the unknowns
of the systems of linear equations.
Gauss – Jordan Elimination method is an extension of the Gaussian Elimination
method/ Gauss – Jordan Elimination Method uses the reduced row echelon form to
solve for the unknowns. Consider the following examples:

𝑤 − 5𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 𝑧 = 2.5
3𝑤 + 4𝑥 − 5𝑦 − 2𝑧 = 6
−2𝑤 − 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 4𝑧 = −9
𝑤 + 3𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 5𝑧 = −3.2

Gauss – Jordan Elimination Method

3.0𝑥 + 2.0𝑥 + 2.0𝑥 − 5.0𝑥 = 8.0
0.6𝑥 + 1.5𝑥 + 1.5𝑥 − 5.4𝑥 = 2.7
1.2𝑥 − 0.3𝑥 − 0.3𝑥 + 2.4𝑥 = 2.1

Gauss – Jordan Elimination Method

3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 3
2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 0
6𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 4𝑧 = 6

Gauss – Jordan Elimination Method

3𝑥 + 7𝑦 − 4𝑧 = −46
5𝑤 + 4𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 𝑧 = 7
8𝑤 + 4𝑦 − 2𝑧 = 0
−𝑤 + 6𝑥 + 2𝑧 = 13

Examples
Solve the following systems of linear equations using Gaussian Elimination Method and Gauss-
Jordan Elimination Method.
3𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 17𝑧 = 32
18𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 16
12𝑥 − 7𝑦 + 11𝑧 = 0

2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 4𝑧 = −8
5𝑦 − 8𝑥 = 2𝑧 + 9
7𝑥 − 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = −17

4𝑥 − 7𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 21
6𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 5𝑧 = −20
𝑥+𝑦+𝑧 =2

2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 4𝑧 = 17
3𝑥 − 2𝑧 = 15
−4𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 𝑧 = 9

8𝑥 − 9𝑦 + 3𝑥 = 0
