The document describes a residential house project called Inward House located in Nizampet, Hyderabad. The tight plot of land required a design that maximized open space within a cubical structure. This was achieved through an introverted design with an open void at the center illuminating the interior. The project accommodates a family through multi-level interconnected spaces that encourage social interaction.

INWARD HOUSE - SPACEFICTION STUDIO

With growing developments across nation, especially in cities

with huge population, the privacy factor for living, is slowly
getting faded. Closely placed buildings, improper placements of
windows, lack of open spaces and availability of bare minimum
space for landscaping, largely impacts the lifestyle of the people.
Set at a short distance of approximately 22 kms from Hyderabad
lies Nizampet village – now a rapidly growing area. The site for
this cubical looking project lies here on a tight plot of 2,450 sq ft,
amid one of the densely packed residential layout.

INWARD HOUSE - SPACEFICTION STUDIO

The by-laws in the outskirt settlements of the city resulted in houses with name-sake
setbacks, with barely any space between them. This instigated to use the plot in a way
that maximizes the open footprint within the built mass but, at the same time balanced
the privacy and spatial requirements. Hence, the design planning of Inward House was
dictated by the site itself. A clear need for introversion arose; to create a large, flexible,
open space within the house around which the rest of the built program can be centered.

The client forms to be a small family of a working couple with three young children. In
the current times where both the parents are working, time and the environment the
family dwells in becomes an important factor to nurture a emotionally and socially
balanced family life. Thus, the need arises for a home with spaces which stimulates
activities and interactions every time the family is together.

Built on this ideology, the house is planned as a G+2 structure with divergently
interconnected spaces that spark conversations from almost any space of the house. A
pedestrian and a drive-way entry are provided for accessing the house. An entry inside
the house lands one into the sunken foyer with a beautiful void volume that is filled
with natural light entering through the skylight. This skylight keeps the entire house
naturally illuminated and breathable with fresh air passing throughout the spaces.

Living

The ground level is occupied with public spaces including the living, dining, kitchen,
the prayer room and a bedroom tucked in the south west corner of the plot. Beside the
living room is small patch of open to sky landscaped space that again becomes an entry
point for the air and dappled light. The dining is placed by a deck space which again
keeps the ambiance well lit and breezy. The staircase of the first level is carved beside
the small prayer room.

Mezzannine

The journey to the first level lands into a mezzanine structure. This mezzanine is built
above the parking space, and shares an exciting connection in the interiors with the
ground and first floor. It’s a cosy space used as a family lounge. The staircase further
leads to the first floor that has three bedrooms. Two bedrooms have attached balconies
as well to allow the users unwind and relax.

Study

A small study space is tucked in between two bedrooms for the children. The staircase
surrounding the study lands up on the second level / the terrace level that works as an
entertainment space. It holds the home theater and also the servant’s quarter. Projected
windows from the bedroom and entertainment area look into the open area, which
houses a garden lit from northern skylight.

Interconnection of spaces as viewed from the mezzanine

The open plan of the house encourages the users to spend time in the family lounge,
living, and foyer spaces. The need of privacy is well respected by the design of individual
user’s bedrooms. All the family activities take place in this flexible, open space which
flows from level to level.

Taking into consideration the direction of the wind, several openings are designed to
facilitate the cross ventilation. The material and color palette are kept largely minimal
and simple. The simplicity of the structure defines the soul of the house. White is used as
the primary color for the interiors and exteriors to visually enlarge the spaces. Punch of
yellows on the façade and in the interiors, highlight the space and breaks the monotony
of the white. The flooring is kept limited to the locally sourced Kota stone. The furniture
and furnishings, are also kept in sync with the minimal design rhythm of the house.
