 Foreword
Entering Anugraha, I found myself
instantly enveloped in a sense of grace
and charm that seemed to echo the
rich tapestry of Bangalore’s heritage.
The intricate interplay of terracotta
jali and teak louvered windows on the
exterior hinted at a thoughtful fusion
of tradition and modernity. Inside,
the spacious yet intimate living
areas welcomed me, each corner
infused with a sense of nostalgia and
tranquility. The double-height dining
area, bathed in natural light from
above, offered a breathtaking vista
of interconnected spaces, seamlessly
blending indoor and outdoor realms.
Anugraha truly embodies the essence
of grace, where every curve and
element whispers tales of timeless
elegance and warmth.

Anugraha

Project Context
A Bangalorean couple, hailing from Jayanagar and deeply connected to its traditional charm,
envisioned a home that seamlessly integrated with the evolving urban landscape. Thus, the concept
emerged of a residence designed around inward spaces, embraced by permeable surroundings.
The team at Defining Space Studio meticulously ensured that the clients’ preferences were met in
crafting this 4,800 sq. ft. house on a 1,500 sq. ft. plot.

Ground Floor
The ground floor is reserved for the parking space and a store room with an attached washroom. A
lift and a staircase leads visitors to the first floor where the heart of the home is.

First Floor
A staircase ascends to the first floor of the residence, where the main activities unfold. Upon
entering through the front door, one steps into the living room positioned in the southern section
of the house. Progressing northward, a dining area and a temple space stand opposite each
other. Adjacent to these spaces lies the open kitchen and a conveniently accessible bedroom. To
ensure constant illumination in the central area of the floor, brick jaali walls have been installed
on both the eastern and western sides, allowing morning and evening light to filter through.

Living Area
The living area is crafted to exude openness and spaciousness, with a south-facing window flooding
the space with abundant daylight from dawn till dusk. To amplify this luminosity, furnishings
adorned in lighter hues of cream and yellow have been carefully selected, enhancing the brightness
of the room. Wood accents complement these shades, infusing the space with a cozy warmth. A TV
unit, finished in wooden veneer, is positioned snugly against the staircase railing, effectively serving
as a partition within the space. The combination of wooden and wicker furniture infuses the area
with warmth and an enchanting old-world allure. Serving as the ideal gateway and welcoming hub
for visitors, the living room radiates inviting charm.

Pooja Space
As you venture further into the residence, towards the east, you encounter a pooja space distinguished
by its double height and a skylight overhead, ensuring perpetual illumination within. To accentuate
this area, the backdrop features an exposed brick wall, lending a rustic touch. The boundaries of the
space are demarcated by a wooden partition adorned with jaali doors. Enhanced by black granite
flooring, the pooja space embodies a minimalist design ethos seamlessly fused with functionality.

Dining Space
Directly opposite the pooja space and adjacent to the staircase stands a minimalist dining area
that harmonizes with its surroundings. An exposed brick wall serves as the backdrop, seamlessly
integrating the outdoor aesthetics indoors and accentuating the charm of the space. A skylight
positioned above ensures a constant influx of natural light, illuminating the area throughout the
day. A touch of greenery further enhances the warmth of the brick, with carefully planted vegetation
lending a natural element. The dining table, crafted from wood, is complemented flawlessly by
wicker and wood chairs. Placing this space at the heart of the house was a purposeful decision,
fostering a continuous sense of connection among its occupants.

Kitchen
The open kitchen was meticulously planned to ensure constant connectivity between the kitchen
and dining areas, fostering a sense of togetherness among users. Characterized by minimalist design,
the kitchen features cobalt blue surfaces complemented by wooden accents, striking a balance
between modern aesthetics and warmth. Despite its minimalist approach, the kitchen remains fully
functional and equipped to cater to the needs of the entire family.

Staircase
The staircase, positioned at the heart of the house, serves as a nearly transparent focal point. A black
metal railing, functioning as both a TV unit and partition on the first floor, seamlessly transitions
into a sleek railing as one ascends further. A wooden handrail introduces a touch of warmth to the
otherwise cool metal structure. The staircase’s treads and risers feature a harmonious blend of black
and grey granite, enhancing the overall aesthetic. To ensure constant illumination, the staircase is
strategically positioned to capture natural light from the backdrop, which is covered with a metal
screen for enhanced security and privacy.

Second Floor Plan

The first floor serves as a secluded sanctuary exclusively designed for the homeowners. It comprises
two bedrooms, each equipped with attached walk-in wardrobes and toilets, creating self-contained
spaces. Cutouts above the dining and pooja areas maintain a visual connection between the
occupants on the first floor and the ground floor below. A notable feature of this level is the addition
of a curved wall in the master bedroom, which serves as a standout element visible from the exterior,
adding a distinctive touch to the house’s overall design.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom exudes a cozy and inviting ambiance, characterized by accents of wood,
brick, and soft fabrics. Designed in a soothing beige shade that harmonizes effortlessly with the
warmth of wood, the bedroom features a striking curved brick wall arranged in a unique pattern.
This curved wall gracefully encircles the bed, guiding one towards the concealed walk-in wardrobe
behind. Within this curved alcove, a seating area provides convenience for dressing up. Grey flooring
complements the hues of the bed linens and the wall paneling, while additional touches of wood
contribute to the room’s overall snug atmosphere.

Kids Bedroom
The kids’ bedroom, while maintaining a minimalist and straightforward design, incorporates
playful elements through its shape and color scheme. The architects have ingeniously crafted
the headboard of the bed in a semi-circular shape, adorned with fabric featuring charming block
prints. This whimsical fabric is also used to accentuate the base of the bed, creating a cohesive look.
To add both sturdiness and warmth to the room, a wooden strip frames the fabric elements. The
room is predominantly covered in a soothing powder blue hue, lending a serene atmosphere. This
color choice extends seamlessly into the adjacent study room, promoting a sense of continuity and
harmony throughout the space.

Study Area
The study area is a generously sized space that offers versatility, capable of functioning as both
a study and play area. It features a cozy seating area with a bay window that welcomes ample
natural light and ventilation. Adjacent to the seating, the wardrobe includes niches where the
daughter can proudly display her collection of toys and books. The circular motif seen in the bed
is echoed in the patterns adorning the wardrobe, creating a cohesive design throughout the room.
This multifunctional space serves as a haven for the daughter, providing her with a comfortable
environment where she can relax, study, and play to her heart’s content.

Terrace Floor Plan

The top floor, or terrace floor, features a private bedroom similar to the one on the lower level,
complete with an attached walk-in wardrobe and toilet, and adorned with a curved exposed brick
wall. However, on the northern side, a spacious terrace has been designed, perfect for gatherings
and social gatherings. Lush vegetation lines the edges, transforming the terrace into a cozy garden
retreat ideal for hosting parties and enjoying outdoor entertainment.

Conclusion
Emphasizing a harmonious balance between indoor and outdoor spaces, abundant natural light,
and verdant foliage, the project stands out for its earthy palette, featuring warm wooden textures,
rustic terracotta finishes, and accents of greenery throughout. Aptly named Anugraha, meaning
grace, the architecture and interiors exude elegance, with curved elements imparting a sense
of grace to the spaces, while enduring materials such as brick and terracotta jaali age gracefully,
embodying the timeless allure of the home.
