S-HOUSE - GALI ASSOCIATES

Its a simple and conventional locality of Chittoor city where this

contemporary minimal residence is located. The site surroundings
are formed of the low rise houses that express a very simple and
basic design. The cubical volume of this residence briefed in
tints of grey, white and brown, is sure to grab the attention. The
façade design which is a balance of open and closed spaces, offers
requisite privacy to the interiors. The design of the front elevation
is certainly unique and different, yet it does not overpower the
context, instead it subtly blends with it.

The house is surrounded by closely placed dwelling units and faces a road in front, and
hence, privacy becomes a foremost concern. The client here wanted a simple and an
elegant house. The design was then conceptualized as an amalgamation of the serenity
prevailing on the site and the client’s requirement. Revealing hardly anything about
the interiors, the façade is inspired by various sections of the metal profiles composed
together to show the slices of the visible form, which thereby create a bold statement.

Planned across two levels with the top floor being a terrace, the facilities inside are
kept spacious, uncluttered, bright and airy. A newness is added in the spaces through
surprising design elements. Ground floor features the basic spaces of any house like
the entrance foyer, living, dining, kitchen, service rooms and one bedroom. These space
connect with each other effortlessly. With living room occupying the center of the house,
the rest of the spaces revolve around it. A charm of vibrance and freshness prevails
across interiors through a deliberately designed window with a screen pattern.

Traversing to the first level becomes an exciting experience as a screened wall adds a
play of hide and seek with the adjoining living room volume. The first floor has three
bedrooms of which one is a guest room and the rest are private bedrooms of the family
members. A common family space overlooks the living room volume and sits at the
same height of the screened window.

An interesting composition of media room with guest bedroom is designed. A partition

between the two, allows the users to connect the spaces and create a larger room for
entertainment activities when guests are visiting. This media room ends up on the
façade with the deck space, and the grid sections on the façade.

The second floor is half built with a play room and open terrace which is landscaped
with yellow bamboo bushes along the edge of the parapet to create privacy and also
to show the green layer on the façade. The material finishes used for this house are
minimal and elegant. The flooring is mostly kept in beige color that brings to focus the
furniture. The walls have details with panels and textures of wooden strips.

Lighting plays a major role in the house during the day by entering through the sufficient
cutouts and cross ventilations created on the thick walls. In parallel, during the nights
these lighting positions and types become a back support to showcase the design elements
and to create warmness inside the house. Especially on the facade, lighting has played a
major role to impress the viewers by providing direct and indirect lighting effects.

Interior details like the ceiling clad in wood, marble center tables, metal details on walls
give a natural and earthy look to the spaces. The staircase covered with vertical metal
louvers provides an indirect contact with the common spaces like the living and the
family spaces. Concrete finishes have been used on floors and walls to achieve seamless
look for the surfaces, with matt finish that absorbs the lighting and their reflections.
