Design Concept
Inspired by the clients’ interest towards art, the house was designed to reflect the concept of patterns.
The use of interesting geometry, colours, and materials brings it the name ‘Pattern Land’. The bold
interiors of the house make a strong style statement. The spaces were zoned in various levels within
the home respecting the needs of the family. The house encompasses spaces like a basement
garden, formal living, terrace lounge, and living room which bring together the multigenerational
family.

Site Context
Pattern land is a 60 ft x 40 ft east-facing plot situated in a calm neighbourhood. The plot is situated
in a hilly terrain in which the orientation and size played a significant role in shaping the design and
layout of the house. The east-facing orientation invites fresh morning sunlight, while the west side is
provided with stone louvers to cut down the harsh radiation. The plot had a pre-existing basement
area which was then very intelligently converted into a basement garden welcoming nature and
indirect light.

Basement Floor
The basement floor was a pre-construction feature of the house that had been demolished. This
was effectively used to create a basement garden that acts as an informal gathering space for the
family members. It was connected to various spaces, including the home theatre, servant quarters, ROAD
and grandfather’s bedroom. A central foyer connects all the spaces on the basement floor. It also
features a stunning Pichwai painting of the Kamadhenu on the ceiling. (Kamadhenu is a divine being
considered to be the mother of cows)

Ground Floor
The ground floor is a rather formal space. Upon entering the house one finds themself in a formal
living space that leads its way to the staircase and lift for the family members to access the other
floors, while it forms a formal setup for visitors to sit and interact, which is directly connected to the
ROAD
office on the south-west corner of the plot. The office and formal living are both connected visually
through a glass pane to the basement garden on the lower floor keeping the spaces connected and
well lit throughout. The patterns made through the flooring and over the wall steal the show.

First Floor
The first floor of the house is mainly used for family gatherings where the double-height living room
is accommodated in the center. The first floor features one bedroom on the south-western corner
of the plot. A family dining area and the pooja room are tucked on the eastern & western ends of
the living room. The kitchen, store, and utility area are connected to the dining area and are tucked
on the south-eastern corner of the property. The dining room has direct access to a balcony, further
connecting to the second floor similar to the double-height living room.

Pooja Room
The pooja room is situated at the western edge of the plot, on the same axis as the dining hall and
living room. Although it is right adjacent to a gathering space like a living room It is separated by a
folding door. The door’s intricate design includes rattan and fabric sandwiched glass placed in a
laser-cut steel frame to resemble a wooden door. Upon entering the pooja room, one is greeted by
a backdrop of marble strips arranged in a patterned, curving wall. Details such as a stainless steel
inlay in contrast to black granite were added that mimics falling petals or flowers cascading from the
ceiling to the marble floor beneath.

Second Floor
Upon entering the floor, one is welcomed into a central reading area that is connected to the
double-height living room below. The second floor also accommodates two bedrooms (the parent’s
bedroom and the daughter’s bedroom) one on each of the eastern and western ends of the site. The
daughter’s bedroom (Bedroom 3) connects to a curved balcony that not only invites light into the
home but is also visually connected to the balcony below.

Third Floor
The third floor is broadly segregated into two spaces one being the private master bedroom, while
the other being an informal lounge and terrace garden. The lounge is used as a play area for the
younger son of the client and is also convertible into a party and gathering space connected to the
terrace through folding glass doors.

Terrace Garden
The garden area on the terrace is an extension of the party lounge that is open to the sky with pergolas
fabricated in metal. The pergola, the stone seating area, and the garden area are all connected by
a pattern of lines that ascend from the building elevation and use the same design language as the
remaining spaces.

Master Bedroom
The bedroom is carefully crafted with patterns playing around through the storage units, wooden
rattan headboard, as well as the flooring. The patterned elements are balanced with terrazzo flooring
and pastel green wall plaster. The western wall of the bedroom is extended with a balcony separated
by a patterned wooden louver on both sides and large glass panes in the middle. A casual seating
and reading platform made of wood is placed right in front of the bed and rests towards the balcony
giving a panoramic view.

Connective Spaces
The building’s design seamlessly integrates
various spaces, ensuring smooth transitions and
connectivity throughout. Despite this fluidity,
distinct zones are demarcated, allowing formal
informal, and outdoor areas to be connected
and coexist without overlap. This thoughtful
segregation ensures functionality and privacy
while maintaining an open and cohesive
environment.
