WHAT IS WEATHER?
Weather is the
condition of Earth’s
atmosphere at a
certain place and
time.
➢It can change from
time to time and
may vary in
different locations.
Climate is the average weather in
a particular area for a considerable
period of time.
Temperature is the level or
measure of the hotness or
coldness of an environment.
Humidity is the amount of water
vapor in the air.
What are the Different Weather
Systems in the Philippines?

Cyclones Breeze
Monsoon Inter Tropical
Convergence Zone (ITCZ)
CYCLONE
➢Is a large and violent
whirlwind observed in
different parts of earth.
➢It is a powerful spinning
storm that contains
strong winds and rain.
➢Cyclones are the same storms as
hurricane and typhoon.
➢The different names have to do
with where the storms form.
❑Cyclones – termed used when it is
formed in South Pacific and Indian
Ocean.
❑Hurricane – are storms that form in
the Atlantic Ocean.
❑Typhoon – occur in the Pacific Ocean
CLASSIFICATION OF TROPICAL
CYCLONES
Tropical cyclones are classified
according to their wind speed.
a. Tropical depression – wind speed of
63 km/ hour or lesser
b. Tropical storm – wind speed of 63 to
118 km/ hour
c. Typhoon – wind speed greater than
118 km/ hour
BREEZE
➢Is the wind that blow
onto the shore from the
sea during daytime and
away from the shore
during night time.
❖Sea breeze
-Occurs during the day,
when land is warmer than
the water.
-Air flows from cooler
water surface to warmer
land surface.
❖Land breeze
-Occurs at night, when
water is warmer than the
land.
-Air flows from the cooler
land surface to the
warmer water surface.
MONSOON
➢Monsoon winds are
stronger than ordinary
breezes as they are formed
by high temperatures in
coastal areas.
INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE
ZONE (ITCZ)
➢is a band of clouds consisting of
showers with occasional
thunderstorms that goes around the
globe localized near the equator.
➢ITCZ is also considered as the
breeding ground of low-pressure areas
(LPA) or weather disturbances.
EL NIÑO
➢Is caused by the warming of
sea surface temperature in the
Pacific and can affect air and
sea currents.
➢This phenomenon resulted in
reduced rainfall that led to dry
spells, droughts, and stronger
typhoons.
LA NIÑA
➢It is often associated with wet
conditions in some parts of
Asia including the Philippines.
➢La Niña in the Philippines is
characterized by prolonged
periods of rain which causes
floods and landslides.
Weather disturbance
➢Refers to the change in
atmospheric conditions or
weather patterns.
➢A difference in air
temperature and surface
temperature creates a swirling
mass of winds
Weather disturbances:
➢Storms
➢Thunderstorms
➢Hurricanes
➢Tornadoes
➢Tropical cyclones
❑Storm
✓is a violent disturbance in
the atmosphere marked by
sudden changes in air
pressure and rapid air
movements.
❑Thunderstorm
✓is a local storm
characterized by thunder
and lightning that happens
over a large area when the
warm, moist air suddenly
rises.
❑Tornado
✓is a whirling funnel-
shaped windstorm.
❑Tropical cyclone
✓ It rotates in a counterclockwise
direction around an “eye”.
✓is a rapidly rotating storm system
characterized by a low-pressure
center, a closed low-level
atmospheric circulation, strong
winds, and a spiral arrangement of
thunderstorms that produce rain
and/or storm.
