Design of Steel Structures

Assignment - 1 (Bolted Connection)

Last Date of Submission: 25/02/2021

Instructions

i. To be submitted on A4 sheets with appropriate detailed connection drawings.

ii. Please justify all the assumptions that you have considered while solving the problem.

Q. 1: Write about minimum pitch and maximum pitch of bolted connection.

Q. 2: Find the efficiency of the lap joint shown in figure below with the following data: M20
bolts of grade 4.6 and Fe410 plates are used.

Q. 3: Find the maximum force which can be transferred through the double covered butt joint
shown in figure below. Find the efficiency of the joint also. Given M16 bolts of grade 4.6
and Fe410 steel plates are used.
Q. 4: Two plates, 10mm and 18mm thick are connected by a double cover butt joint using 6mm
cover plates as shown in fig. Find the strength of the joint. Given M20 bolts of grade 4.8
and Fe410 plates are used..

Q. 5: Design a splice to connect a 300x20mm plate with a 300x10mm plate. The design load is
500kn.Use 20mm black bolts of grade 5.4.

Q. 6: Determine the design tensile strength of 160x8mm plate with the holes for 16mm bolts as
shown in fig. plates are of steel, grade Fe415.
Q. 7: Determine the design tensile strength of the plate 200mmx12mm with the holes for 16mm
diameter bolts as shown in fig. Steel used is of Fe415 grade quality

Q. 8: Design a Lap joint between plates 100× 8 mm so as to transmit a factored load of 100 kN
using black bolts of 12mm diameter and grade 4.6. The plates are made of steel of grade
Fe-410.

Q. 9: Design a Lap joint between two plates of size 120 x 12 mm thick and 100 x 12 mm thick
so as to transmit a factored load of 80 kN using a single row of M20 bolts of grade 4.6 and
grade 410 plates.

Q. 10: A single bolted, double cover butt joint is used to connect two plates each 6 mm thick.
The thickness of cover plate is 6 mm. The bolts used are M20 of grade 4.6, provided at 60
mm pitch. Calculate the load carried by the joint and its efficiency. Use steel having fy =
250 Mpa and fu = 410 MPa.

Q.11: Two plates 10-mm and 18-mm thick are to be jointed by a double cover butt joint.
Assuming cover plates of 8-mm thickness, design the joint to transmit a factored load of
500 kN. Assume Fe 410 plate and grade 4.6 bolts.

Q.12: Design a single bolted double cover butt joint to connect boiler plates of thickness 16 mm
for maximum efficiency. Use M 20 bolts of grade 4.6. Boiler plates are of Fe 410 grade.
Draw the connection details.
