Design Ideology
The elevation of a house is essential, but so is the
planning. The house is meticulously planned to ensure
that every space is well-connected vertically and
horizontally while being naturally lit and ventilated.

Entrance Foyer
As one parks their car against a large travertine stone
wall, which forms an integral part of the elevation as
well, they are taken to an enclosed intimate entrance
vestibule. The vestibule with a water feature and
interesting sciography patterns formed by the jaali
screen creates an interesting curiosity to the visitors
of the house.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 13
Drawing Room
Upon entering the house, one is welcomed by a
partition screen on one side and a drawing room on
the other. Enclosed within glass openings on either
sides, the drawing room opens up to a landscaped
garden on the northern side. The full-height glass
openings keep this space naturally lit. The travertine
wall in the front becomes the highlighting wall on the
interiors of the drawing room.

Living Room
As one moves further into the house, they walk into
a double-height central court attached to the living
room. Both the spaces are physically separated by a
partition that also acts as a tv unit. The living room
too has full-height glass windows that open out
towards the northern garden. A lilac lounger sofa in
the living room with pastel lounge chair combines
well with the Armani grey italian marble flooring that
completes the ambience of this space.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 17
Dining Area
The dining area forms the heart of the house & has a
double-height with circulation areas overlooking it.
It is further enhanced by a solid wood dining table
that contrasts well with the marble floor. A cluster
of decorative glass lights softens the space & adds
vanity to it whereas the lilac fabric adds a pop of
color. The full-height glass covered with a metal
screen create interesting patterns of sciography
throughout the day.

Kitchen
The kitchen forms a transition space between the
dining area and the passage. Its open planning
doubles it up to form an interaction space where
everyone can gather for their morning breakfasts. A
soft color palette and modular kitchen cabinets make
it functional and easy to use.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 21
Parents’ Bedroom
A more neutral and softer colour palette takes over the parents’
bedroom on the ground floor, that makes it look more mature in
its outlook. This particular bedroom gets most of its light from the
south-west. Full height glass windows open up to the landscaped
area in the rear margin of the plot. The landscape gets reflected in
the interiors in the form of the olive green colors of the furnishings
and artwork.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN A
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 25
The Staircase
The staircase detail is designed to have the first
few steps alternating between the marble from the
floor and solid wood. It appears as if the staircase is
growing out of the floor. The structure of metal & solid
wood sits like a sculptural piece of horizontal, vertical
& diagonal lines, following the same patterns formed
by the light and shadow from the sun light. The same
vertical and horizontal patterns are repeated in other
partition screens placed throughout the house.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 27
Master Bedroom
The master suite takes up a large part of the floor
plate and has separate sleeping and lounge space. An
eclectic fabric and furnishing selection matches the
young couples vibe. The flooring continues on to this
floor and combines well with the bed back comprising
wood and PU fabric. The wall is treated with textured
paint that becomes a backdrop for the custom made
artwork.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 29
Master Bathroom
The master bathroom and dress form a singular large space. The
glass wardrobes run the lengths of this space with a big vanity
mirror in between. A console unit with a basin sits in the forefront
of a wall clad with a unique selection of graphical tiles. Behind this
wall is a WC and shower separating the dry and wet areas. The
bath area is designed to be clutter free and easy to move around
in.
PERCHED HOUSE | VPA ARCHITECTS 31
Kids’ Bedroom
The children’s bedroom has 2 separate beds and a
big study desk with ample storage, perfect for the
growing up kids. Ample storage in the form of shelves
form the bed back in the room. The color palette of
the room is kept neutral and combines paste blues
and pinks.

A section along the central passage shows how
every room opens out into this passage thus
interconnecting the whole house. The travertine wall
in the drawing room on the ground floor has a slit
on its top edge that brings in light from the northern
side and the multipurpose room on the first floor too
opens out into a balcony overlooking the front road.

Conclusion
The perched house is a perfect example of a house
wherein the exterior blends with the interiors, not just in
space but also in terms of materials, design language and
outlook. The house emphasizes on planning, which should
ideally be the crux of any project, and therein it takes form
vertically.
