When the Implement ECM activates an event code, the operator will be alerted by the Messenger. Most active events will be logged
by the ECM. Some events are active only. Events that are active only are not logged by the ECM. The active events and the logged
events can be viewed by use of the Messenger or by use of the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) Service Tool.
Warning Levels
The ECM will assign one of three warnings levels to an active event code. The levels are based on the severity of the abnormal
system condition. Each warning level requires a specific response from the operator. The warning levels and required operator
response are listed below.
Level 1
Warning level 1 alerts the operator that a machine system requires attention. The operator should check that the involved system
condition or the operator should perform maintenance on the involved system at the earliest possible time.
Level 2
Warning level 2 requires changing the operation of the machine or performing a maintenance procedure. Failure to correct the
problem related to this warning may result in damage to the components of the machine system that are involved.
Level 2S
Warning level 2S requires an immediate change in machine operation to avoid possible damage to the system of the machine.
Level 3
Warning level 3 requires an immediate safe shutdown of the machine to avoid damage to the machine or injury to personnel around
the machine. The problem that caused the event must be corrected before machine operation can resume.

The warning indicators for the subsystem on the Instrument Cluster will illuminate when an event is activated for a particular
subsystem. When level 1 events are active, the warning indicator of the subsystem will be the only type of indicator that will illuminate.
The action Indicator will flash red when a level 2 warning or level 3 warning is active. If communication between Messenger and the
Instrument Cluster fails, the action lamp will flash yellow.
The action alarm is driven as an output directly from the Instrument Cluster. If a level 3 warning is active, the action alarm will sound a
tone (pulsing). The action alarm will sound these tones to alert the machine operator that immediate action is required.
If two warnings of a different level are active at the same time, the highest level warning will be displayed.
The response of the Messenger to these warning levels is shown in the following table.
Table 1
WARNING OPERATION
Warning Indications
Event codes are displayed on the Cat ET Service Tool in the following format:
The "E" means that the code is an event code. The "XXXX" is a numeric identifier. The numeric identifier is followed by a description
of the code.
Active event codes are listed in ascending numerical order. The code with the lowest number is listed first. The active event code is
removed from the list when the condition is no longer present.
A logged code is cleared from memory when one of the following conditions occur:

SIS 2.0 https://sis2.cat.com/#/print-preview/service/874b16b0-b11f-4d93-896d-8f4c063c5c49
• A new code is logged and there are already ten logged codes in memory. In this case, the oldest logged code is cleared.
Note: Always clear logged event codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.
Troubleshooting
Perform the following steps to troubleshoot an event:
◦ Determine the operating conditions of the engine at the time of the event. Conditions such as engine rpm and load may be
important.
◦ Determine if there are any systems that were installed by the dealer or by the customer that could cause the event.
2. Verify that the event is not due to normal machine operation. Verify that the event is not due to error of the operator.

Code
Description Possible Cause / Recommended Response
(Level)
Immediate safe shutdown required.
Activates when ECM does not receive expectant steering position signals.
The following active diagnostic codes (CID) will cause E192 to activate:
* Note: CID 585 and CID 673 must BOTH be present to set an E192.
** Note: CID 674 and CID 675 must BOTH be present to set an E192.
Investigate and resolve the cause of the listed active diagnostic code. Then, reset the active
event with a key start switch cycle.
Immediate safe shutdown required.
Possible causes:
Steering Output Detected
E256 (3) · Hydraulic hose connections are reversed.
in the Wrong Direction
· Secondary solenoids electrical connections are reversed.
· Hydraulic steering valve is malfunctioning.

Possible causes:
Steering Output Detected · Operating the machine in rough terrain is forcing unexpected movement of the front
E257 (3)
With No Command wheels.
· Hydraulic steering control valve problem.
· Short circuit in the steering command control signal circuit.
Possible causes:
No Steering Detected
E258 (3) · Mechanical problem in the steering control valve.
With Command Given
· Mechanical steering linkage is physically blocked.
· Front wheels are physically blocked and will not respond to command.
· Loss of load signal.
Aligned occurs when the machine is started. Also when the machine is parked, the operator
Steering Lever Has Not leaves the seat and the joystick is moved.
E562(1)
Been Aligned To Wheel
(1)
Steering Angle Possible causes for not aligning:
· Operator present switch is indicating no operator in the seat. Operator must be seated.
· Left Joystick is being swept too fast. Sweep slower.
· Wheels are out of the accepted angle (extreme angle). Manually move the wheels into the
accepted range.
E598(1) Steering Limited Due to Allow machine to warm up at low idle before operating or operate the machine in a low gear
(2) Cold Hydraulic Oil until oil is warm.
Immediately slow the machine down and place in low gear.
E599 (1)
Gear Too High For
(2S) Steering with Cold Oil Allow machine to warm up at low idle before operating or operate the machine in a low gear
until oil is warm.
Immediate safe shutdown is required.
One ECM (Implement or Trans/Chassis) does not have steering alignment between joystick
Steering Systems Not
E794 (3) and steering cylinders and the other ECM is aligned.
Synchronized
Can be caused by rapid key ON/OFF/ON cycle. Shut down the machine, restart the
machine, and align the steering (see EID 562 above).

The machine has articulated more than 3.5° with no command within a 3 minute time period.
Once the time period ends, the time period resets and the ECM uses the current articulation
angle as a reference point to determine the 3.5° movement without command.
