Overview of HP UPD

w
rt
HP developed the HP UPD (Figure 1) to help virtually eliminate the need for multiple printer drivers and to enable effective

pa
management of the printing environment. When deployed across the IT environment, HP UPD is a single, intelligent print
driver that greatly reduces printer-related IT tasks and help desk calls. It also improves the printing experience by providing a
in
unified interface for all HP printing devices while providing all available features and functions for each device. Office workers
or

can enjoy the benefits of using a single driver for printing on virtually any HP printing device.

IT personnel also benefit by saving time managing printer drivers and responding to printer-related issues. HP UPD conserves
these resources enabling IT personnel to focus on other strategic IT functions.
&L

Once HP UPD is installed, it communicates with each supported HP printing device to acquire the devices unique capabilities.
C

HP UPD displays the latest accurate device information, including advanced options, such as automatic two-sided printing,
P

input trays, and finishing features. Broad compatibility and bi-directional communication enables users to access all features
H

of nearly every HP device in a managed printing environment.

The device information available on the HP UPD reflects the actual complete capabilities of each device. HP UPD uses the
printer Update Now feature to update device information, such as added finishing accessories, whenever new information is
available. The user interface is also consistent across devices to improve usability.

HP Universal Print Driver Technical v14.41

Print jobs go to the print server or directly to the print device depending on the network environment. The same bi-directional
communication provides real-time information, such as when the job has finished printing (rather than when the job spools to
the print server).
More information is available at the following location: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Universal_Print_Driver
HP UPD GUI walk around

d.
One of the powerful and unique features of HP UPD is its polling capabilities. It communicates with printing devices and

te
identifies their features and functionality. It also provides a printing preferences dialog that can be adapted based on the

i
environment. The GUI interface includes a series of tabs: Advanced, Printing Shortcuts, Paper/Quality, Effects, Finishing, Job

ib
oh
Storage, and Services. If the printer is a color printer, the GUI interface includes a Color tab. If the device has a stacker or
finisher an Output tab will be visible.

pr
The first tab in the group is the Advanced tab (Figure 2).

ho

The Advanced tab provides options to change the layout of printed pages, to configure special controls that are not commonly
ke

used, and to change other settings, such as paper size and number of copies. Many software programs also enable control of
a
St

Advanced tab features through the print dialog or application page settings.
&L

Image Color Management (ICM) options configure printing color graphics. This enables programs to adjust colors before
printing to provide images on the screen that more closely match the color of printed images.
C

The TrueType Font feature downloads TrueType fonts on the printer to ensure that they are accurate. The default is to have
P
H

the printer substitute them with equivalent device fonts to improve performance (print speed).
Advanced Printing Features include options such as watermarks and booklet printing when available and enabled.
Print Optimizations (PCL6 only) is a combination of the best of Page Description Language (PDL) printing with the best of host-
based printing. This feature enables files to print faster without degradation of print quality. Print Optimizations is available
only for Microsoft Windows where it is automatically enabled upon installation.

Printer Features:

 The Printer Features options provide controls over the performance of the printer. As a rule, the default settings provide
the best performance using the capabilities of the printer to determine the amount of toner or ink to use and the image
compression to use. You would change the settings to reduce the overall performance to conserve items, such as toner.
 The Print All Text as Black option ensures that only black toner or ink is used for fonts even if the font color is specified in
the document (e.g. red used in warnings). This can save money because black toner or ink is usually less expensive than

d.
color toner or ink.

te
 The Alternative Letterhead Mode option eliminates the need to flip or reload letterhead or preprinted paper in a tray

i
ib
regardless of one-sided or two-sided printing. You load the paper as you would for printing on both sides. If the tray has

oh
an icon that indicates orientation (face up or face down), load the paper in the opposite orientation shown by the icon.

pr
 The Raster Compression option enables you to choose a different level of compression to speed up the printing process.

is
 The Send True Type as Bitmap option disables the font rasterizing process in the printer and relies on Windows

on
capabilities to produce the text.

si
is
m
Layout options

er
The Layout Options change the page order of the finished document in the bin. This makes collating easier in certain cases.

tp
The page ordering operation counts whole sheets of paper rather than individual logical pages. Accordingly, if you configure

ou
Pages per Sheet (on the Finishing tab) to greater than 1, the layout option does not change the ordering of logical pages on a

ith
sheet of paper.

w
rt
The Printing Shortcuts tab (Figure 3) appears on the HP PCL 6 print driver and on HP UPD. A printer shortcut has configured

pa
settings saved as a file for use next time you want to print a similar document. This can save time by preventing you from
having to reconfigure all of the options to get the type of printing you want. For instance, you might configure the printer to
in
print on both sides in grayscale (black only) with two pages per sheet. Once you have a printing shortcut saved, you can click
or

the printing shortcut, and all of your settings are configured for the new print job.

The Paper/Quality tab (Figure 4) provides options to specify the size, type, and source of the paper. It also provides options to
specify paper types or sizes for the various parts of the document, such as front cover, the first page, other pages, the last
page, and the back cover.

If you are printing a report, you might want the cover to be heavy card stock, the body to be high-quality stationary, and the
back cover to be a specific color of card stock. You can specify all of these preferences in the Paper/Quality tab to save you
le
ho

from having to print each component in the report separately. This scenario works on printers with multiple trays that can
provide varying paper products, but it also works with printers with single trays. HP UPD prompts you to load the right paper
w

type as it prints the report.

The Resizing options specify the paper you want to use and the size of the content on the paper. This option is useful to adjust
du

the blank space on the edges of a document. For instance, you might want a document on a size of paper different from the
paper you have available, and you plan to trim the paper to the right size. You also might want an extra-large border on the
ro

page to accommodate designs or special stationery.

ep
.R

The Watermarks options place faint text on the paper to appear as a watermark. You can specify the text, the position, the
ly

size, the darkness, and the color of the watermark. A common usage of the Watermark feature is to place the word DRAFT
on

across each page to indicate that a document is not finished. Another example: placing a company name faintly across the
page to promote a business.
s
er
ld

The Finishing tab (Figure 6) provides options to print booklets and to control the paper output. The icon in the upper right
ho

quadrant of the dialog lists the configuration so you can see the effects of the settings.

The Document Options configure printing on both sides and booklet printing (if available).
io
ct

Select Print on both sides to save half of the paper. Many printers can print on both sides automatically, but you can also print
du

on both sides manually where the printer provides prompts to tell you when to turn the pages over. Printing on both sides is a
ro

good practice for green initiatives. Select Flip pages up if you are printing a document where the pages turn on the top edge of
ep

the paper (e.g. a document for use on a clipboard or a document used as a flip chart).
.R

The Booklet layout option enables you to save even more paper by printing on both sides with two pages per sheet and with a
fold in the center. This feature prints the pages in the right order so you can fold the entire printout in half to form a booklet.
ly

Some printers include output bins that fold and staple the booklet.
on

The Pages per sheet options enable you to save even more paper by scaling pages and placing multiple pages on each sheet.
s
er

You can choose the order in which the pages appear on each sheet. This feature is sometimes called N-up. N is the number of
ld

pages to print on a sheet. Select Print page borders to place a line around each page on the sheet to set each page apart from
ho

the other pages.

ke

The Orientation options place the content on the page based on the layout of the page. Portrait places the content to be read
a

with the short edge of the paper at the top of the page. Landscape places the content to be read with the long edge of the
St

paper at the top of the page. Portrait commonly used for most documents. Landscape is commonly used for large, wide,
images. The Rotate by 180 degrees option changes the vertical orientation. This is common for documents that are laid out
&L

with two columns per page to read as books.

C

The Output tab (Figure 7) provides options to configure stapling and to direct print jobs to specific bins. This tab varies by
P
H

model and by optional installed output devices. Some output devices have multiple mail boxes that you can specify; others
have accessories, such as staplers, that provide added value. Some output devices have hole punchers. Note: If no output
accessory is provided the tab will not show up.

Question: What does HP EasyColor do when checked?

io
ct

Answer: HP EasyColor takes advantage of applications that support PNG and JPEG pass-through. Examples of these
du

applications are Microsoft Office applications. HP EasyColor will have no effect on PDF, Illustrator or Photoshop images, as the
ro

technology differs from Microsoft Office applications.

ep

The Color Options are available when HP EasyColor is disabled. These options control the amount of color used to create
.R

shades of gray and color. The Automatic option uses the capabilities of the printer to determine the best print quality, based
on what you are printing. The Manual option provides settings to configure treatment of black verses color. The Print in
ly

Grayscale option eliminates color and converts the content into black only print. This is the most economical way to print.
on
s
er

Note
ld

Most color printers cannot eliminate all color from print jobs. They add tiny color dots to the page to conform to regulatory requirements.
ho

Normal printing processes also consume tiny amounts of toner for processes, such as cartridge maintenance.
a ke
St

The Manual settings in the Color Settings dialog (Figure 10) adjust the color (or color map) and halftoning options individually

NOTE
le

Some applications convert text or graphics to raster images. In these cases, the Photographs settings also control text and graphics.
ho
w
in

Halftone options affect the resolution and clarity of the color output:
n
io

 The Smooth option provides better results for large, solid filled print areas. It also enhances photographs by smoothing
ct

out fine color gradations. Choose this option for uniform and smooth area fills.
du

 The Detail option is useful for text and graphics that require sharp distinctions among lines, colors, or images that
ro

contain a pattern or a high level of detail. Choose this option for sharp edges and details.
ep
.R

The Neutral Grays setting determines the method for creating gray colors in text, graphics, or photographs:
ly
on

 Black Only generates neutral colors (grays and black) using only black toner.
s

 4-Color generates neutral colors by combining all four toner colors. This produces smoother gradients and transitions to
er

other colors, and it produces the darkest black.

ld
ho
ke

The Edge Control setting determines how edges are rendered. It has two components: adaptive halftoning and trapping.
Adaptive halftoning increases edge sharpness. Trapping reduces the effect of color plane misregistration by overlapping the
a
St

edges of adjacent objects slightly.

&L

 Maximum is the most aggressive trapping setting. Adaptive halftoning is on for this setting.
C

 Normal is the default trapping setting. Trapping is at a medium level, and adaptive halftoning is on.
P

 Light sets trapping at a minimal level, and adaptive halftoning is on.

H

 Off turns off trapping and adaptive halftoning.

The Color Themes from the color tab is device dependent. The RGB color:

14 Copyright ©2014 HP corporate presentation. All rights reserved.

Demo guide

 Default instructs the printer to interpret RGB color as sRGB. sRGB is the accepted standard of Microsoft and the World
Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
 Photo (sRGB) enhance documents in which the content is mainly bitmap images, such as .GIF or .eps files. This setting
instructs the device to use the best color matching for rendering sRGB bitmap images. This setting affects only raster
data; it has no effect on text or vector-based graphics. Using glossy paper in combination with this setting provides the
maximum enhancement.

d.
 Photo (AdobeRGB 1998) – is for documents that use the AdobeRGB color space rather than sRGB. When printing from a

te
professional software program that uses Adobe RGB, it is important that you turn off the color management in that

i
ib
software program and allow the print driver to manage the color space.

oh
 Vivid (sRGB) - instructs the printer to increase the color saturation in the midtones. Less colorful objects are rendered

pr
more colorfully. This value is recommended for printing business graphics.

is
 None - instructs the printer to print RGB data in raw device mode. To render documents properly when this option is

on
selected, you must manage color in the program in which you are working or in the operating system.

si
 Custom Profile – should be used a custom input profile to accurately control color output (for example, to emulate a

is
specific HP Color LaserJet product). To download custom profiles lookup a printer and find a profile under utilities.

m
er
tp
HP EasyColor automatically improves mixed content documents printed from Microsoft Office programs. This technology
scans documents and automatically adjusts photographic images in .JPEG or .PNG format. HP EasyColor enhances the entire

ou
image at one time rather than dividing it into several pieces, which results in improved color consistency, sharper details, and

ith

Task 2: Installation of HP Universal Print Driver in dynamic mode

Introduction: This lab focuses on installing HP UPD on a PC using dynamic mode.
You can choose among three ways to install HP UPD:

 Use the prepackaged HP UPD self-extracting driver

d.
 Use the Microsoft Add Printer Wizard

te
 Use the command line in combination with parameters

i
ib
oh
When HP UPD is installed in dynamic mode, it appears as a typical printer in the Printers folder, but it provides a unique

pr
interface that enables users to locate and connect to a number of printers quickly:

is
 Type a printer address.

on
si
 Search the local subnet for printers.

is
 Type the name of a print server.

m
er
tp
Installing dynamic mode does not require elevated user rights or printing permissions. It allows the existing user permissions

ou
to remain intact. Printers found via dynamic mode are temporary connections and do not appear individually in the Printers
folder. Dynamic mode is supported in Direct IP and local printing only and is not supported as shared printers on print servers.

ith
This section explains each of the dynamic mode options.

w
Question: What is dynamic mode?

rt
pa
Answer: Dynamic mode locates network printers within the same subnet, or it provides options to specify printer addresses or
print server names. This is useful for people who travel or who want to use new devices.

Answer: Starting with UPD 5.6.5, new options in install.exe for Windows Vista and later Windows operating systems add
the ability to select USB mode for USB Plug and Play with options to remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver
in
from Windows driver store, or to add the HP Universal Printing Driver to Windows driver store. These settings only impact

Task 3: Installation of HP Universal Print Driver in traditional mode

Introduction: This lab demonstrates how install and use the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) in traditional mode.
You might wonder why HP UPD has a traditional mode. Traditional mode functions exactly the way product-specific drivers
work. When installed in traditional mode, the HP UPD is associated with a single printing device, which you can select from the
Print menu of an application, such as Microsoft Word. Once selected, the HP UPD in traditional mode functions as a standard

d.
device-specific driver for one printing device.

te
Traditional mode installations are suited for environments where administrators want refined control over a specific driver

i
ib
and device. The typical model is a print server where drivers are installed, configured, and then shared on the network for

oh
other users. The benefit for the administrator in this environment is that one driver works for a wide range of print devices.

pr
This makes internal IT processes around driver certification, deployment, and configuration more simplistic over the typical
print server deployment, which can have dozens of individual drivers installed on the same server.

Question: What is the difference between the driver with a version number and the driver with no version number? (ex.
ho

PCL 5 vs. PCL 5 (v5.9.0))

w

Answer: HP UPD provides the option to install the UPD as either non-version-specific or version-specific. Either option
in

provides the same set of driver features. The version-specific option enables installation of two or more UPD driver
n

versions on to the same system. With the non-version specific option, all printer names have the same version of the HP
io

UPD that is installed on the system.

ct
du

As a best practice, HP recommends installing the UPD in version-specific mode for best support control of driver version
ro

upgrades and new device introduction. This enables the administrator to install multiple versions of the UPD onto the
ep

same system. Administrators can create new print queues for new print devices without the need to recertify or retest
existing deployed devices to the new driver version.
.R

Figure 52 represents an example of different driver names and versions installed on the same system. Notice that all
ly
on

printer names that are assigned to the UPD non-version specific driver use the same driver version. Three versions of the
UPD are installed using PCL6, PCL5, or PS.

Task 5: Driver performance

Introduction: This task explores the various UPD drivers and compares their performance.
While different drivers offer different features, the specifications fail to show how they perform in specific customer
environments. HP offers three versions of the UPD: PCL5, PCL6, and Postscript. PCL 6 is the newest platform, but each driver
has unique benefits and performs better in specific applications.

d.
The architecture of the PCL 6, also called the enhanced driver, is optimized for printing from graphical interfaces. Postscript,

te
on the other hand, continues to excel at printing complex graphics and images from Adobe applications. PCL 5 is valuable for

i
ib
backwards compatibility but lacks some of the newer features of PCL 6, such as the encrypted printing option on HP

oh
FutureSmart devices.

pr
Another new feature of HP UPD PCL 6 is print data optimization, which allows the print job to use the host memory to ensure

is
high-quality printing. By default, this feature is set to Auto.

on
The flexibility to tailor the path to the UPD driver can noticeably improve productivity in a work environment. The following

si
print data optimization options are available:

is
m
 Auto is the default mode where the driver behaves as a host-based printer only for the applications listed above and

er
as a standard PCL6 print driver for all other applications.

tp
 Optimize for Raster configures the driver to send data as a host-based print driver.

ou
 Optimize for Text and Vector configures the driver to send data as a standard PCL6 print driver.

Discussion points:
io
ct

 What are the differences between the files from the different drivers?
du

 What driver showed the best performance?

ro

 How can you increase PCL 6 driver performance?

ep

 Is there a difference in file size between using the traditional driver verses the dynamic?
.R
ly

Results will vary depending on the data printed but as you might expect PCL6 is much smaller than PCL5. Remember PCL5 has
on

to switch to HP GL/2 for vector graphics. Sometimes Postscript can be smaller or larger than PCL6. Remember Postscript has
s

programming logic so it can save space with repeating objects. File size is not the only factor to consider but larger files will
er

take up more network bandwidth and take longer to print. If customers are evaluating driver strategies this could be very
ld

helpful information.

Task 6: Exploring HP UPD color options

Introduction: This task provides an overview of sRGB, explores the color options in UPD PCL 6, and tests the quality differences
from different settings.
Standard red-green-blue (sRGB) is a worldwide color standard that HP and Microsoft developed as a common color language
for monitors, input devices (scanners and digital cameras), and output devices (printers and plotters). It is the default color

d.
space used for HP products, Microsoft operating systems, the World Wide Web, and most office software. The sRGB standard

te
represents the typical Windows monitor and is the convergence standard for high-definition television.

i
ib
For most users, the best method for matching colors for printing is sRGB.

oh
The process of matching printer output color to the computer screen is complex because printers and computer monitors use

pr
different methods of producing color. Monitors display colors in light pixels using a Red-Blue-Green (RGB) color process, but

is
printers print colors using a cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) process. This requires a process to convert them (Figure

on
61).

ke

The Color Options are available when HP EasyColor is disabled. These options control the amount of color used to create
a

shades of gray and color. The Automatic option uses the capabilities of the printer to determine the best print quality based on
St

what you are printing. The Manual option provides settings to configure treatment of black verses color. The Print in Grayscale
&L

option eliminates (most all) color and converts the content into black-only print. This is the most economical way to print.
C

H

Note
Most printers cannot eliminate all color from print jobs. They print tiny dots in arrays to satisfy federal regulations and the use small amounts
of toner for calibration purposes.

The five options:

.R

 The Default (sRGB) option instructs the printer to interpret RGB color as sRGB. The sRGB standard is the accepted
ly

standard of Microsoft and the World Wide Web Consortium (www.w3.org ).

on

 The Photo (sRGB) option interprets RGB color as a photograph. It works like a mini-lab. It renders deeper, more saturated
s
er

colors differently than Default (sRGB) mode does. Use this setting for printing photos.
ld

 The Photo (Adobe RGB 1998) option is for digital photos that use the Adobe RGB color space rather than sRGB. When
ho

printing from a professional software program that uses Adobe RGB, it is important to turn off the color management in
ke

the software program and allow the printer to manage the color space.
a

 The Vivid (sRGB) option instructs the printer to increase the color saturation in the mid tones. Less colorful objects are
St

rendered more colorfully. This setting is recommended for printing business graphics.
&L

 The None option prints RGB data in raw device mode. To render photographs correctly when this option is selected, you
C

must manage color in the program in which you are working or in the operating system.
P

 The Custom profile option provides the opportunity to match color based on needs using color profiles of other HP
H

printing devices.

The Manual settings in the Color Settings dialog adjust the color (or color map) and halftoning options individually for text,
graphics, and photographs. See Figure 63.

The Edge Control setting determines how edges are rendered. It has two components: adaptive halftoning and trapping.
ep

Adaptive halftoning increases edge sharpness. Trapping reduces the effect of color plane misregistration by overlapping the
edges of adjacent objects slightly.
.R

 Off turns off trapping and adaptive halftoning.

ly
on

 Light sets trapping at a minimal level, and adaptive halftoning is on.

s

 Normal is the default trapping setting. Trapping is at a medium level and adaptive halftoning is on.
er
ld

 Maximum is the most aggressive trapping setting. Adaptive halftoning is on for this setting.
ho
a ke

Halftone options affect the resolution and clarity of the color output:
St
&L

 The Smooth option provides better results for large, solid filled print areas. It also enhances photographs by smoothing
out fine color gradations. Choose this option for uniform and smooth area fills.
C

 The Detail option is useful for text and graphics that require sharp distinctions among lines, colors, or images that
P
H

contain a pattern or a high level of detail. Choose this option for sharp edges and details.

The Neutral Grays setting determines the method for creating gray colors in text, graphics, or photographs:

 Black Only generates neutral colors (grays and black) using only black toner.

Copyright ©2014 HP corporate presentation. All rights reserved. 47

HP Universal Print Driver Technical v14.41

 4-Color generates neutral colors by combining all four toner colors. This produces smoother gradients and transitions to
other colors, and it produces the darkest black. It also uses the more expensive color toner to product black.

RGB Color

 Default instructs the printer to interpret RGB color as sRGB. sRGB is the accepted standard of Microsoft and the World

d.
Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

te
 Device instructs the printer to print RGB data in raw device mode. To render photographs properly with this selection, you

i
ib
must manage image color in the application or operating system.

oh
pr
HP EasyColor automatically improves mixed content documents printed from Microsoft Office programs. This technology

is
scans documents and automatically adjusts photographic images in .JPEG or .PNG format. HP EasyColor enhances the entire

on
image at one time rather than dividing it into several pieces. It improves color consistency, sharpens details, and speeds up
printing.

HP Universal Print Driver Technical v14.41

Task 7: Pre-configure the printer driver (Optional)

Introduction: In this task, we explore the HP Driver Configuration Utility and how to configure a driver for deployment in an
environment.
Up to this point we have discussed the fundamentals around installing HP UPD manually via install.exe and using the Microsoft
Add Printer Wizard. In a typical business environment, the end user would not perform these tasks, rather the administrator

d.
would deploy the pre-configured driver to a print server, or to the client workstation directly. To aid in both the pre-

te
configuration and deployment tasks, HP has developed the following driver pre-configuration and deployment utilities.

i
ib
Driver configuration, or pre-configuration, is an approach to manage the installation of print drivers in a managed network

oh
environment. Information Technology (IT) administrators, in managed network environments, can use HP printer

pr
management software to configure the printing defaults for HP printer drivers before installing the driver(s) in the network
environment. In other words, IT administrators can pre-configure the driver before deploying it.

is
on
For example, a company has purchased several HP Color LaserJet printers to be shared among several workgroups. To reduce
printing costs, management wants all of the print queues to print on both sides of the paper (duplex) by default. In addition, to

si
minimize toner consumption, color printing is restricted to specific groups. Several different print servers are in use, each of

is
m
which has one or more queues to the new devices. Some users can print directly to the new printers over the network.

er
However, IT wants to apply the same driver configuration to those print queues.

tp
Previously, printers in such a scenario would be installed on each print server and then manually configured with the required

ou
settings. The printers would then be manually configured with the required specifications on each direct-print workstation. By
using driver pre-configuration technology, this process is greatly simplified. The following steps will show how to pre-

ith
configure a print driver.

rt
Microsoft provides when the driver is WHQL-certified.

To prevent the WHQL Digital Signature warning from appearing during driver installation, save the driver configuration file as a Modified

The HP Driver Configuration Utility is a small Windows application used to edit the configuration file associated with a
n

particular driver. The configuration file controls the print driver settings and takes effect when the driver is installed for
io

both dynamic and traditional mode installation methods.

ct

The HP Driver Configuration Utility does not handle any part of the deployment or installation of the driver. Rather, the
du

default configuration file is modified and saved back to the same driver directory in which it was opened (hpcpu*.cf*) or
ro

saved to the local host's directory (filename.cfm). The HP Driver Configuration Editor is intended for use in environments

Figure 73: File used to reconfigure print settings.

s

In order to use the HP Driver Configuration Utility, the driver(s) to be configured must be in their standard .INF-file driver
er

packages that are obtained from either the HP Web site or from the product in-box CD-ROM. The driver(s) must be stored
ld

where the user has write accessibility. The driver must also support driver pre-configuration. The standard driver INF
ho

package contains an hpcpu*.cf* file that is read by the HP Driver Configuration Utility using Open from the File menu. If
ke

the tool is used to browse to a driver directory and there is no .cf*, the driver cannot be preconfigured.
a
St

The HP Driver Configuration Utility has two methods for creating preconfigured driver settings for driver installation. Each
&L

method uses the same configuration file but different file names for deployment. For either method, when driver
C

installation is complete, the printer's default settings reflect the preconfigured settings. From this point forward, the
printer and driver behave like any printer in terms of settings management. Users can modify the unlocked printer
P
H

settings through the Printers folder and modify jobs within applications. The two methods are described in this section.

Configuration file hpcpu*.cf*: Print Administrators can create multiple custom configurations of the complete print driver
INF package by altering the hpcpu*.cf* file with the HP DCU (you cannot change the default filename). For example, the
administrator can copy the driver package to two separate directories. Each directory contains a custom *.cf* created by

the HP DCU (for example, \ \fileserver\upd_duplex_enabled and \\fileserver\upd_ColorOptions). When a preconfigured

driver is installed from the driver source package, the modified hpcpu*.cf* is read and the settings applied as the defaults
for the installed driver. Because the configuration file shipped with the drivers is part of the *.INF file package (referenced
in the .INF file as a dependent file of the driver), modifying this file invalidates the digital signature of the Microsoft WHQL
certified driver package. The hpcpu115.cfg file in UPD 5.9 and latest versions can be saved with the custom name using
extension *.cfm. For example – hpcpu*.cfg file with custom Duplex settings can be saved with custom name as
“duplex.cfm” in any directory. This file can be used by using the UPD install switch /gcfm. For example: c:\UPD53\install

Task 4: Stored Job

Introduction: This task demonstrates the stored job feature.
Stored job enables users to send a print job to a printer's hard drive or RAM disk for storage indefinitely. The stored job can be
printed at any time from the printer’s control panel. This eliminates the need to send commonly printed jobs or forms from a
user PC each time they are printed. Stored jobs can be secured with a PIN. This feature is extremely helpful for common forms

d.
or hardcopies. A user can easily walk up and print the document any time.

Question: How is a personal job different from the stored job protected by a PIN?

Note
on

If you turn the printer off, all quick copy, proof and hold, and personal jobs are deleted. You can also delete a job storage job using
options at the printer control panel or when any of the printer disk erase functions are used.
s

The HP secure erase features do not support removal of data on the following devices:
ld

- Flash-based non-volatile RAM used to store default printer settings, page counts, etc.
ho

- System RAM disk (if utilized).

ke

- Flash-based system boot RAM

a
St

Changing the erase mode (secure sanitizing erase, secure fast erase, or non-secure fast erase), does not overwrite previously-stored
data on the disk. It also does not immediately perform full secure storage erase. Changing the erase mode dictates how the MFP erases
&L

data after the erase security mode has been changed.

C

Task 5: HP Secure Encrypted Print (SEP)

Introduction: This task demonstrates the how to and why to use the Encrypted Job (with password) feature.
HP Secure Encrypted Print (SEP) or Encrypt Job (with password) provides end-to-end secure print job transmission with
mutual authentication on the supported devices. This allows a user to encrypt their print job and print-job password for either
personal jobs or stored jobs on the printer. The print job is sent and stored encrypted, and can only be printed after entering

the password on the device. HP uses true symmetric AES256 bit encryption and decryption and the industry standard FIPS-140

Scenario
Improve Workflow: A 10-employee insurance agency is looking for an easy way to manage the endless amounts of printed
forms. The challenge is that adjustors are always scrambling to print the correct form on the right letterhead. The result has
cost countless hours of time and money as adjusters submit the wrong forms on the wrong letterhead. The owner has grown
tired of apologizing to brokers for the mistakes and worries that, one day, he may be served with litigation for damages
caused to the client or to the broker. How can you improve this situation using HP Job Storage features?
