Project BASA Implementation

( Boosting reading Activities for Struggling readers
to improve Academic performance )

Reading literacy is the ability to independently read, understand,

analyze and think critically about a range of different print and digital text
types. It is required for various purposes such as for personal enjoyment,
to learn about the world and to be involved in the community.
COVID- 19 pandemic has worsened the reading crisis in school.
Children are severely behind in reading. The learners of Alupay
Elementary School greatly suffer from illiteracy brought about by health
crisis.
The Pre - Oral Reading Assessment showed that out of 545 learners,
101 were recorded as struggling and non-readers in Pre-Oral Reading
Assessment in English. This showed an alarming data that results in a low
proficient reading skill. Different factors were traced why many learners
were illiterate based from the root cause analysis done by the School
Planning Team and Project BASA Team. It was revealed that the cause of
illiteracy was lack of parent’s supervision in child’s learning.
The improvement of reading skills of the learners is one of the main
area of focus for priority improvement. Developing strong reading skills in
students is one of the key goals of every early education program. That is
why, this is one of our top priority area for improvement that needs to be
given full attention in order to develop the comprehension skills of the
learners in achieving better
performance in all subject areas. As a result of this, PROJECT BASA was
organized and implemented to help the slow and non- readers at risk.
The school administrator, teachers and parents had already started
the implementation of the school reading program, PROJECT BASA to
lessen the numbers of struggling readers. The school head, Mrs. Marissa
D. De Ocampo and the designated School Reading Teacher conducted
remedial reading and oral reading assessment during their vacant time.
As of now, the teachers/ advisers conducted the following activities
to address the illiteracy problem. The activities were the following:
