FIELD NO.: 1

TITLE: PACING

INSTRUMENT & ACCESSORIES:


2-Range Poles, 1-Steel Tape, Marking pins
Chalk or crayons

ALTERNATIVE:
Marking pins : replaced with masking tape

OBJECTIVES:
1. To determine the average length of your own pace,
2. To become familiar with using a steel tape to measure approximate horizontal distances; and
3. To become familiar with keeping notes in a field work.
4. To determine an unknown distance by using my own
pace

PROCEDURE:
Part 1. Determining Pace Factor

a) Select a straight and level markers at least 5 meters apart. Designate these ends points as A
and B.
b) Walk over the course at a natural pace-or gait starting with either heel or toe over point A and
count the number of paces to reach Point B.
c) For succeeding trials, walk. from B to A' then A to B' until 5 trials are completed, and the
number of paces recorded accordingly
d). Refer to the accompanying sample forma r for the recording, for the observed field data.

CONCLUSION:
I therefore conclude that the pace factor at my normal walking state is 1.1161 meters per
space.

REFLECTION:
I was able to do the task easily at night when there were no playing kids around and less cars
passing through.
The program outcomes of this course are:
a. Apply the knowledge of math and science to solve complex civil engineering
problems
b. Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
c. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic
constraints, in accordance with standards;
d. Functionn in multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams;

f. Understand professional and ethical responsibility;
g. Communicate effectively civil engineering activities with the engineering community
and with society at large;
h. Understand the impact of civil engineering solutions in a global, economic,
environmental, and societal context
i. Recognize the need fro, and engage in life-long learning
j. Know the contemporary issues
k. Use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for civil engineering
practice’
l. Know and understand engineering and management principles as a member and
leader of a team in a multidisciplinary environment

PROCEDURE:
Part 2. Determining unknown distance by pacing
a) Define or established the end points of another level course surface whose length is to be
determined by pacing. Designate these end points as C and D (segment CD).
b) For the first trial, walk over the course from C to D at a natural pace and record the number of
paces. Then, walk from D to C and again record the number of paces.
c ) Repeat the above procedure until all five trials are completed.
d) After the field data is recorded , make a an actual taping of the course CD to determine the
tape distance.
e) Refer to the accompanying sample format for the recording of observed field data.

CONCLUSION:
I therefore conclude that the pacing I have is accurate and is within the <10%
requirement of error.

REFLECTION:
I was able to gather data with the alternative equipments that I had and it was easily calculated
with the given time.

Pace-how fast something travels a particular distance


Pacing- to walk with often slow or measured tread
Strodes- walk with long, decisive steps in a specified direction.
