THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

Regular habits or daily routine:

• Use the Simple Present to express the idea that an action is repeated
or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event or
something that often happens.
Example:
• I play soccer everyday.
• The school opens every morning at 7 am.
• She always forgets her bag.
• Every twelve months, the Earth circles the Sun.
Facts or generalizations:
The Simple Present can also indicate a fact.
It is also used to make generalizations about people or things
Example:
1. Cats like milk.
2. Caracas is the capital of Venezuela.
3. Windows are made of wood.
4. Men are more hardworking than women.
General or Universal Truth

• EXAMPLES:

• All that glitters is not gold.


• Might is right.
• If you heat ice it melts.
• The sun rises in the east.
Scheduled Events in the Near Future
Speakers occasionally use Simple Present to talk about scheduled events
in the near future. This is most commonly done when talking about
public transportation, but it can be used with other scheduled events as
well.
Example:
1. The bus leaves tonight at 6 pm.
2. When do we board the plane?
3. The party starts at 8 pm.
4. The next slot/class begins at 10 am.
Use The simple present is used with adverbs
like:
• Always : I always come to school by car .
• Often: I don’t come here very often .
• Usually: He usually eats breakfast at 7:00 AM.
• Sometimes: Sometimes I go to party.
• Rarely: She rarely cooks.
• Never: He is never late for class.
• Every day: They sleep early every day.

I First person Singular
We First person Plural

You (S/P) Second person Singular/Plural

He/ she/It (S) Third person singular

They (p) Third person Plural


Grammar rules 1
• To form the Simple Present we add -s to the infinitive of the verb in the
3rd person singular (he, she, it)
• With first person (singular/plural) and third person plural (WE) we do not
add anything.
E.g.
FIRST PERSON
I/we/You/They live They/ you/ I/we sing

THIRD PERSON
He/she/it lives
He/she/it sings
Grammar rules
• . To form the negative and the interrogative we need the auxiliary
verb to do in the present simple.

• DO I/you/they/ We like apples? Interrogative


• I/you/they/We DON’T like apples. Negative

• DOES she/he/it like apples? Interrogative


• He/she/it DOESN’T like apples. Negative
Negative interrogative

• Doesn’t she like cars? / Does she not like cars?


• Don’t you attend the class daily? Do you not attend the class daily?

Affirmative/Positive
Subject + Verb (add -s, -es to the 3rd person singular)+ complement
Negative
Subject + Aux. do/does + not + verb + complement (doesn’t/don’t)
Interrogative
do/does + subject + verb + complement + ?
Negative-Interrogative
Do/does + subject + not + verb + complement
Don’t/doesn’t +subject+verb+complement
Examples
• The sun rises in the east.
• The sun does not rise in the east.
• Does the sun rise in the east?
• Does the sun not rise in the east?

• Aliya likes ice-cream.


• Aliya does not/doesn’t like ice cream.
• Does Aliya like ice-cream?
• Doesn’t Aliya like ice-cream?
Grammar Structure with Wh
questions/words
• Simple present Wh- Questions with the auxiliaries “do” and “does” do
EXAMPLES:
What do you do on Saturday morning? -I have breakfast in a
restaurant.
What does she do on weekdays? -She does exercise.
When do you go to school? - We go to school on weekdays.
When does he play soccer? - He plays soccer on Wednesday.
