Assignment-1

B.Tech. First Semester (2024-25)

Engineering Physics (TPH-101)

Note: All questions are compulsory.

1. What do you mean by Coherent sources and coherence? Why two independent
sources of light cannot produce sustained interference?

2. What do you mean by interference of light? Discuss the conditions of

constructive and destructive interference using path difference between two
coherent light waves.

3. Two coherent sources are 2.0 mm apart are illuminated with a monochromatic
light of wavelength 5896 Å. Fringes are observed at a distance 60 cm from the
sources. Find the fringe width and comment on the shape of the fringes.
4. A light source emits light of two wavelengths 4300 Å and 5100 Å respectively.
The distance between the source and screen is 1.5 m and the distance between
the slits is 0.025 mm. Calculate the separation between the second order bright
fringes due to these two wavelengths.

5. Calculate the fringe width of interference pattern produced in Young’s double

slit experiments with two slits 10 -3 m apart on a screen 1 m away. The
wavelength of light is 5893 Å.
6. What is Fresnel’s biprism? Give the production and theory of fringes produced
by it. Derive the expression of fringe width and angular fringe width.

7. A biprism is placed 5 cm from a slit illuminated by sodium light (λ = 5890 Å).

The width of the fringes obtained on a screen 75 cm from the biprism is 9.424
× 10-2 cm. Calculate the distance between two coherent sources.

8. The distance between the slit and the biprism and between the biprism and the
screen are 50 cm each. The obtuse angle of biprism is 179° and its refractive
index is 1.5. If the width of the fringes is 0.0135 cm, calculate the wavelength
of light.
9. Discuss the interference of light when a thin transparent plate is introduced in
the path of one of the two interfering beams. Derive the expression to
determine the thickness of thin plate.

10.In Fressnel’s biprism experiment, on inserting a thin plate of glass in the path
of one of the interfering beams; it is found that the central bright fringe shifts
into the position priviously occupied by 8 th dark fringe. If the wavelength of
the light used is 5000 Å and the refrective index of the glass plate is 1.5,
calculate the thickness of the plate.
11.On introducing a thin sheet of mica of thickness 12 × 10-4 cm, in the path of
interfering beams in a biprism experiment, the central fringe is shifted through
a distance equal to the spacing between successive bright fringes. Calculate the
refractive index of mica (λ = 6 ×10-7 m).
12.Discuss the thin film interference and associated interference conditions.
Explain the production of colours in thin films.

13.A parallel beam of light (λ = 5890 Å) strikes a film of oil (μ = 1.46). If the 10th
dark ring be seen, when viewed at an angle of 30° to the normal. Calculate the
thickness of the film.
14.A soap film is illuminated by white light incident at an angle 30°. The
reflected light is examined by a spectroscope in which dark band
corresponding to the wavelength 6 × 10-7 m is found. Calculate the thickness
of the film. Given μ = 1.33.
15.Define the term Wedge film? Discuss the formation of bright and dark fringes
in Wedge shaped interference.

16.When a wedge-shaped air film is viewed by a monochromatic source of light

incident normally, the interference fringes 4 mm apart are observed. If the air
space is filled with water (μ = 1.33), how far apart will the fringes be observed.
17.What are Newton’s rings. Explain the formation of Newtons rings in reflected
monochromatic light. Why Newtons rings are circular?

18.Establish the expressions for the diameter of Newton’s bright and dark rings
respectively.

19. Newton’s rings are observed normally in reflected light of wavelength 5.89 ×
10-5 cm. The diameter of the 10th dark ring is 0.50 cm. Find the radius of
curvature of the lens and the thickness of the film.
20. In Newton’s ring experiment, the diameter of the 4th and 12th dark rings are 0.4
cm and 0.7 cm respectively. Find the diameter of 20th dark ring.
