E2002 Analog Electronics – Tutorial 5

1. Identify the region of operation for the following circuits. What is the VC, VE, IB, IC and
IE in each case. If active, what is the collector voltage? Assume |VBE| = 0.7 V and  =
100.

(Ans: (a) Saturation, VC = 1.4 V, VE = 1.7 V, IB = 0.29 mA, IC = 0.14 mA, IE = 0.43 mA;
(b) Active, VC = −13.68 V, VE = −20.7 V, IB = 18.4 A, IC = 1.86 mA, IE = 1.86 mA)

2. Check if the region of operation for the following circuits. Determine the operating
point if it is in saturation. Assume  = 0. VTN = 1 V and Kn = 0.5 mA/V−1 for NMOS
and VTP = −1 V and Kp = 250 A/V−1 for PMOS.

(Ans: (a) Saturation region, VDS = 16.28 V, ID = 3.43 mA; (b) triode region)

3. A common-emitter amplifier circuit is shown in Figure 3. Assume that the capacitors
have infinite value,  = 100, VCC = VEE = 15 V, RI = 750 , R1 = R2 = 200 k, RL = 100
k, RE = 280 k, and RC = 100 k. Calculate the DC operating point of the amplifier.
(Ans: IC = 50  VEC =10.86 V).

Calculate the dc power dissipation in each element in the amplifier circuit. Compare the
result to the total power delivered by the sources.
(Ans: PR1 = 1.125 mW, PR2 = 1.125 mW, PRc = 0.25 mW, PRE = 0.71 mW, PBJT = 0.54
mW. PS = 3.76 mW)
