FUNCTIONS NOTATION
What is a function?
• A function is a mathematical rule or expression that defines a relationship between one variable
(the input or independent variable) and another variable (the output or dependent variable).
• A function relates to an input and output. When Two quantities x and y are related , the range
values of x and the values of y are determined by that of x
• A function is like a machine that takes a value of x and returns a unique value of y.
• The simplest definition is an equation will be a function if, for any x in the domain of the equation
(the domain is all the x’s that can be plugged into the equation), the equation will yield exactly
one value of y when we evaluate the equation at a specific x.
For each value assigned to r, there corresponds a value of A. We say that A is a function of r
and in symbol, we write

1.1 FUNCTIONS NOTATION
In general, if there a relation between two variables x and y such that for each EXAMPLE:
value Of x, there corresponds a value of y, then y is said to be a function of x. The area of a rectangle is 6 sq. in. Express the perimeter P
Symbolically, this is written in the form of the rectangle as a function of the length x of one side.
SOLUTION :
The function concept may be extended to relations between more than two Since area is 6 sq. in., then the length of the other side is
variables. Consider the equation f (x,y). 6/x and the perimeter is
This implies that z is determined when x and y are given and it is customary to
say that z is a function of x and y. For instance, the volume of a right circular
cylinder is a function of the altitude h and radius r of the base. that is,

1.3 EVALUATION OF FUNCTION:
To evaluate a function, you need to replace the input variable in the formula with the value provided and then
calculate the result
