STRAIGHT LINE AND ITS GENERAL EQUATION

Q1. A quadrilateral ABCD has vertices A (8, 4), B (7, 1), C (5, 3) and D (4, 6). If the area of
triangle ABC is 29 square units2, then find the area of the quadrilateral ABCD.(2018)
(b) A line segment is formed by joining the points (7, 1) and Q (4, 3). Find the coordinates
of a point Z that divides this line in the ratio 5 : 2.
(i) externally (ii) internally
(c)(i) The lines 1, 2 and 3 are the sides of a triangle. The lines 1 and 2 are given as 1 : y =
8x + 2 and l2 : y = 3x + 3. Find the angle of the triangle that is measured from 1 to 2.
(ii) For the line 5x + y + 20 = 0, determine if the points (4, 3) and (5, 2) lie on the same
side or opposite sides.
Q2.(a) For the lines l1 : y = 5x + 7 and l2 : y = 3x  8, find the (2017)
(i) angle from l1 to l2.
(ii) equation of a line that is parallel to 2 and passes through the point (2, 3).
(b)(i) Find the perpendicular distance of a point (5, 7) to the line 2x  3y  13 = 0.
(ii) Find the equation of a line that is perpendicular to the line y = 5x + 9 and curts yaxis at 3.
(c) Find equation of perpendicular bisector of the line joining the points (3, 10) and (5,
14). This perpendicular bisector meets xaxis at a point Q. Find the co-ordinates of the
point Q.
Q3. A is a point (a, 3a + 9) and B is a point (2a + 4, 4a  1), where a is a constant. Given that
the distance AB is 260. Find the possible value of a. (2016)
Q4. Find equation of perpendicular bisector of the line joining (2, 9) to (10, 5). This perpendicular
bisector meets x  axis at a point Q. Find the coordinates of the point Q.
Q5. In the given triangle ABC, the line AD is perpendicular to CB. The equation of line AD is
y = x  1 and the coordinates of A and D are (8, a) and (2, 1) respectively. Find

Q9.(a) Two lines 1 and 2 intersect each other at the origin as shown on the graph below. The
slope of 1 is 1 and 2 passes through (2, 4). Find the combined equation of the two
straight lines and the acute angle between the lines. (2014)

(b) Convert the equation 6x  3y  36 = 0 into slope intercept form and intercepts form. Also find the
equation of line which is perpendicular to the given line and has the same y  intercept.
(c) Find the distance between the parallel lines 3x  7y + 21 = 0 and 6x  14y + 22 = 0.
