Home Assignment-1

Instructions for solving the assignment:

i. Every student is supposed to solve 1 sub-question from each of the main
questions A, B, C, D (i.e. total 4 questions)
ii. Make a separate section for home assignments in your tutorial notebook
and solve all home assignments in this section only.
iii. Get the assignment checked by your tutorial teacher on or before 23.11.2024

A) Define Rank and Echelon form of a matrix. Reduce the following matrices to the Echelon form
and hence find its rank:
6 1 3 8 3 2 1 3 2
4 2 6 −1 1 0 2 1 4
(1) [ ] (2) [ ]
10 3 9 7 2 3 3 4 6
16 4 12 15 1 2 4 1 8

3 −3 4 2 1 −3 −6
(3) [2 −3 4] (4) [3 −3 1 2]
0 −1 1 1 1 1 2

B) Reduce the following matrices to Row reduced Echelon form and hence find its rank:
3 2 1 3 2
1 1 1 2
1 0 2 1 4
(1) [3 −3 1 2] (2) [ ]
2 3 3 4 6
2 1 −3 −6
1 2 4 1 8

6 1 3 8
1 −1 1
4 2 6 −1
(3) [2 2 −3] (4) [ ]
10 3 9 7
1 −4 9
16 4 12 15

C) Test for consistency and if consistent, solve the following system of equations:
(1) 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 3
2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 1
4𝑥 + 𝑦 + 5𝑧 = 2
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 4

(2) 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 5𝑧 = 1
3𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑧 = 2
𝑥 − 4𝑦 − 6𝑧 = 1

(3) Show that the system 3x  4 y  5z   ; 4 x  5 y  6 z   ; 5x  6 y  7 z   is consistent

only when  ,  ,  are in arithmetic progression.

(4) Investigate for what values of  and  the system of simultaneous equations,
x  y  z  6; x  2 y  3z  10; x  2 y   z   have
(a) no solution (b) an infinite number of solutions.
(5) Find the values of  for which the equations,
( 1) x  (3  1) y  2 z  0;
( 1) x  (4  2) y  (  3) z  0;
2 x  (3  1) y  3( 1) z  0
are consistent and find the ratios x : y : z when  has the smallest of these values.
What happens when  has the greater of these values.

(D) Solve following system of equations using Gauss Jorden Elimination method

(1) 𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = 2
3𝑥 + 8𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 10
4𝑥 + 9𝑦 − 𝑧 = 12

(2) 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 4𝑧 = 11
𝑥 + 5𝑦 + 7𝑧 = 15
3𝑥 + 11𝑦 + 13𝑧 = 25

(3) 2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 5𝑧 + 𝑤 = 5
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧 − 4𝑤 = −1
3𝑥 + 6𝑦 − 2𝑧 + 𝑤 = 8
2𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 2𝑧 − 3𝑤 = 2

(4) 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 6
2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 13
5𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 12
2𝑥 − 3𝑦 − 2𝑧 = −10

(5) 4𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 6𝑧 = 8
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧 = −1
15𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 9𝑧 = 21
