CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the Study

Given that it grows rapidly, bamboo is a choice that is good for the natural world. Bamboo's life

cycle—as well as its smaller ecological imprint when compared to synthetic materials are frequently

the subject of research. The ways in which using bamboo can help cut carbon emissions and plastic

waste. Bamboo, which has long been utilized in building, furniture, and home products, has lately

gained attention in the fashion sector as an environmentally friendly material for accessories like

purses.

The project investigates about the bamboo bags' potential as a sustainable substitute for traditional

bags or pouches. It looks into consumer perceptions of eco-friendly materials, the robustness and

creative potential of bamboo products, and the opportunities and problems associated with

mainstreaming bamboo bags in international markets. It addresses urgent environmental issues and

encourages sustainable innovation. The fashion industry's carbon footprint may be significantly

reduced by using bamboo bags, and this study will add to the expanding body of knowledge on the

development of environmentally friendly products.

An alternative to plastic and synthetic materials are bamboo bags, which can be made from

bamboo structural parts or woven from bamboo fibers. By encouraging renewable resources, these

bags stimulate a circular economy in addition to lowering dependency on dangerous substances.

In support to the idea of bamboo thread, it finds out the mechanical properties, laminated

bamboo composites (LBCs) made of fiberglass matting and Apus bamboo (Gigantochloa apus). The

outcome shown that a thinner bamboo lamina with more bamboo layers might be used as a solution

to improve the strength qualities of LBCs.

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

The bag or pouch market is fiercely competitive, with existing companies struggling to keep

up due to product flaws like moisture sensitivity, which significantly impacts quality and customer

satisfaction. High production costs, stemming from inefficient manufacturing processes and the use

of inferior materials, further hinder their ability to compete effectively. These elevated costs make it

difficult for companies to offer competitive pricing, leading to reduced profit margins and a weaker

market position.

Bagboo offers a refreshing alternative with its unique blend of high material quality,

fashionable design, eco-friendliness, and antimicrobial properties. The superior quality of bamboo

ensures durability and longevity, while its sustainable nature and antimicrobial properties enhance

practicality and reduce environmental impact. This combination sets Bagboo apart from the

competition, positioning it as a valuable addition to the market.

Furthermore, bamboo is a highly sustainable resource, growing rapidly without the need for

pesticides or excessive water, thus reducing the environmental footprint. Its natural antimicrobial

properties help keep the bags hygienic and odor-free, enhancing their practicality. Bagboo embodies

a perfect balance of style, sustainability, and functionality, making it a valuable addition to the market.

By addressing the shortcomings of existing bag companies, Bagboo offers a compelling

solution for consumers seeking quality, responsible, and aesthetically pleasing bags. Its unique

combination of features positions it as a strong contender in the competitive market, appealing to

environmentally conscious consumers who value both style and functionality.

trade and ethical production methods is crucial for retaining customers over the long run and standing

out in the marketplace.

III. Significance of the Study

The research on bamboo bags is noteworthy for a number of reasons, emphasizing its effects on the

environment, the economy, and society. This project will provide various methods, techniques, and

modern strategies that can give a big help for those people or individuals who are really interested to put-

up this kind of business.

To the bamboo farmers, it will give those means/ways financially, which they can use to continue

their planting activity thereby providing the needs of their families. In the center of the bamboo supply

chain are bamboo farmers. Farmers now have more chances to enhance their standard of living and ensure

a consistent income due to the growing demand for bamboo bags. Farmers profit from the increasing

demand for environmentally friendly items by growing and providing bamboo used to make bags.

Additionally, this can result in the growth of rural economies, especially in areas where bamboo grows

widely.

To the community, it can help local artisans and workers gain employment opportunities in the

production and sale of bagboo, which can uplift the local economy, reduce poverty, and enhance

livelihoods, especially in rural areas. It adopts sustainable practices, it could lead to a ripple effect of

greener habits and environmental preservation.

B.1 Thread Process

Process Picture

• The bamboo is cut into smaller pieces

(Strips)

• The bamboo strips are soaked in water

and baking soda to soften the fibers

(This can help facilitate the extraction)

• After soaking for 1 week remove it to

the water.

• The strips are cleaned to remove any

remaining bark or impurities.

• The bamboo strips are dried to reduce

moisture content, which helps in

preserving the material and preventing

mold.

• The dried strips may be further split

into finer threads or fibers, depending

on the intended use.

• Finally, the bamboo threads can be

spun together to create yarn or left as

individual threads for weaving or

knitting the bag.

Once the thread is ready, it is cut into the

desired shapes and sizes for the bag. This

includes pieces for the main body, straps and

any additional compartments.

The cut fabric pieces are sewn together to

form the bag. This can involve various

stitching techniques to ensure durability.

Any finishing touches, such as adding

closures (zippers, buttons) or embellishments,

are applied. The edges may be hemmed or

reinforced.

The finished bags undergo quality checks to

ensure they meet standards for durability and

craftsmanship.

Finally, the bags are packaged for

hours a day, that's 1.2 kWh per day per fan, or 2.4 kWh for both fans. Monthly, this would be 72 kWh.

Lights: The power consumption of lights varies, but let's assume you use 10 10-watt LED bulbs for 5

hours a day. This would be 0.5 kWh per day, or 15 kWh per month.

Total Consumption: Adding the fans and lights, you get 87 kWh per month.

Electricity Rate: The rate in Palawan is around ₱9.744 per kWh. So, your monthly bill would be

approximately ₱847.28.

Water: The average water bill in Palawan is around ₱320 per month for households with piped water

access. Water is used for treating bamboo to prevent pests and mold and soaking the bamboo in water or a water-

based solution for softening the bamboo strips. Water is used to clean the bamboo and other materials before they

are processed into bags. If the bamboo bags are dyed, water is used in the dyeing process to mix dyes and rinse
