that when an electric charge is given to an insulator, it is unable to move freely and remains
localized.

39 The domestic electric circuit consist of red insulated cover called as 4
live wire, wire with black insulation called as neutral wire and the wire
with green insulation is called as Earth wire. We know that fuse is
connected in series with the circuit to prevent the damaging of
electrical appliances and circuit from overloading. The Earth wire
which is green in colour is connected to a metal plate deep in the earth
near the house. This type of safety measure is used in appliances like
electric press, toaster, table fan, refrigerator etc. The Earth wire is gives
low resistance conducting path for the electric current. In this way it
protects us from severe electric shock.

Take two different coils of copper wire having a huge number of turns
(say 50 and 100 turns respectively). Insert them over a non-conducting
cylindrical roll, as shown within the figure. (You may use a thick paper
roll for this purpose.)
Connect the coil1, having a bigger number of turns, in series with a
battery and a plug key. Also, connect the second coil 2 with a
galvanometer as shown.
Plugin the key. Observe the galvanometer to test if there's a deflection
in its needle. It is observed that the needle of the galvanometer instantly
jumps to one side and just as quickly returns to zero, indicating a
momentary current in coil 2.
Disconnect coil 1 from the battery.
It is observed that the needle momentarily moves but to the opposite
side. It implies that now the current flows in the opposite direction in
coil 2.

26 When the tip of the tendril comes in contact with the support more 2

27 (a) Light coming from the stars are supposed to travel in a straight 3
line. But the refractive index of air is not same throughout. It
changes as hot air rarer than cold air. So refraction takes place.
In this case, straight continuously travel from a rarer medium
to denser medium. Hence it is continuously bends towards the
normal.
The continuously bending of stars light towards the normal 163
results in a rise of the apparent position of the star.
(b) Scattering of light take place because of the particles present in
atmosphere. At high altitudes due to absence of atmosphere
scattering of light do not take place and hence sky appears
dark to passengers flying at high altitudes.
28 Grass (pJ) → Grass hopper (qJ) → Frog (rJ) → Snake (sJ) → Peacock 3
(2J)
According to 10% law energy available to snake is:
10% of s = 2J
s = 20J
Similarly energy available to frog is:
10% of r = 20 J
r = 200 J 258
Similarly, energy available to grasshopper is :
10% of q = 200 J
q = 2000 J
Now, energy present in grass is:
10% of p = 2000 J
p = 20,000 J
Thus, energy present is grass is 20,000 J.

(a) Greater than slope of V-I graph, greater will be the resistance of
given metallic wire. In the given graph, wire A has greater slope
then B. Hence, wire A has greater resistance.
For the wires of same length and same thickness, resistance
depends on the nature of material of the wire. Hence wire A has
high resistivity. (R α ρ)
(b) (i)No, the bulbs in the two circuits will not glow with the same
brightness. The resistance in the parallel connection of resistors is
always less than the resistance in series connection. As a
consequence, the current in the series combination is one-third that
of the current in each bulb inside the parallel combination. So, the
bulbs in parallel connection will grow with more brightness.
(ii)If one bulb gets fused, the entire circuit will break in series
connection. So, no current will flow in of the bulbs. All three
bulbs will stop glowing in series connection. In a parallel
connection, the situation is different. Even if the bulb gets fused,
the current will continue to flow in the other two bulbs. So, in
parallel connection, the other two bulbs will continue to glow.

(a) CUSO4.5H2O is hydrated copper sulphate and CUSO4 is
anhydriys copper sulphate.
Activity:
Aim: To show that hydrate copper sulphate and anhydrous
copper sulphate are inter-convertible.
Apparatus Required: CUSO4.5H2O (Blue vitriol) burner,
boiling tube, delivery tube, test tube.
Procedure:
(a) Heat a few crystals of copper sulphate in a dry boiling
tube.
(b) After having, water is removed and salt turns white.
(c) Add 2-3 drops of water on the sample of copper
sulphate obtained after heating.
(d) When crystals are moistened again with water blue
colour reappears.
Chemical Reaction:
CuSO4.5H2O ∆ CuSO4 + 5H2O
Result: Crystaline substances have water of crystallization
which is lost on heating. When hydrated copper sulphate is
heated, it converts into anhydrous copper sulphate. When
water is added again to it, it gets converted into hydrated
copper sulphate. This shows that both are inter-convertible.
