Job/s performed in the Company
During my On-the-Job Training (OJT) at Matrix Electro-Mechanical
Engineering Services, I had the opportunity to engage in various tasks under the guidance of my mentor, a licensed engineer. My responsibilities encompassed thermal scanning, live testing, insulation resistance testing, the measurement of load currents on three-phase lines, and the documentation of data during thermal scanning. Furthermore, I contributed to pre- and post-thermal scanning activities for electrical preventive maintenance across multiple Vista Malls. In addition to this, I had the chance to observe and familiarize myself with the process of changing genset oil at various malls and hotels, gaining insights into the operation and configurations of gensets.
While at the office, I focused on learning electrical plan symbols and
legends, organizing and binding documents, printing, creating company profiles, and assisting with design tasks. Additionally, I helped to organize tools in the storage room and received training on on-site operations, including hands-on practice with dummy circuit breakers, insulation resistance tests, and different tools and equipment.
II. Experience earned in terms of:
1. Knowledge (Principles, Theories and Concepts) – State here the things
learned in school that was applied in the job and that knowledge that was learned while undergoing the training.
Throughout my OJT, I successfully applied different principles and
theories acquired during my academic studies, including electrical circuit analysis, load calculations, and safety protocols. This was particularly evident during tasks such as insulation resistance testing and thermal scanning. Moreover, I acquired valuable new perspectives on the practical applications of these concepts, including the significance of thermal scanning for preventive maintenance and a deeper understanding of gen-set operations, which were not extensively covered in my academic curriculum.
2. Skills (Applied and Developed.)
Skills Applied: The skills I acquired in school, such as circuit analysis, using electrical testing equipment, and understanding electrical diagrams, proved invaluable during tasks like load testing, data recording, and interpreting electrical plans.
Skills Developed: During my training, I developed new skills,
including hands-on experience with thermal scanning, live testing, and genset operation. I also enhanced my ability to work with real- world electrical systems and improved my organizational skills through tasks like document binding, tool organization, and contributing to design tasks.
Skills learned in school are useful in the job.
Skills learned in the company while on training.
2. Values (Learned and Applied.)
I've come to understand the significance of professionalism, which
involves being punctual, diligent, and attentive to detail. These qualities are crucial for ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately and on time in a professional environment.
Working with co-trainees and engineers has shown me the value of
teamwork, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and effective communication in achieving common goals and solving problems. Taking ownership of assigned tasks has helped me develop a stronger sense of responsibility, allowing me to comprehend the weight of my role in the success of projects. Adapting quickly to new challenges and environments has enabled me to apply my knowledge and skills in various tasks and settings, from site visits to office work. Though I always valued time, my experience has reinforced the importance of time management in the professional world, highlighting the necessity of having a flexible schedule.
In conclusion, my experiences have shaped me into a professional who
understands the importance of punctuality, teamwork, responsibility, adaptability, and time management. These qualities have not only enhanced my professional growth but also contributed to the success of the projects I have been involved in.
3. Human Relationship (Observed and Applied.)
In the course of my internship, I had the opportunity to observe and
partake in various interpersonal dynamics within the company. I witnessed the pivotal role of effective communication, respect, and empathy in fostering positive and collaborative work environments. Observed:
During my recent experience, I found that effective communication,
respect, and empathy were key factors in fostering a positive and productive work environment. Clear and concise communication proved to be crucial for understanding tasks, resolving issues, and maintaining strong working relationships. Additionally, the demonstration of respect for each other's expertise and contributions among the engineers and technicians created a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Understanding the perspectives and challenges of others also played a significant role in building trust and cooperation among team members.
Applied:
Throughout my time at work, I made it a priority to practice active
listening, respectful collaboration, and an empathetic approach. This involved attentively listening to my colleagues, showing respect to everyone regardless of their position, and making an effort to view situations from their perspective. These interpersonal skills enabled me to cultivate positive relationships, contribute effectively to team projects, and better understand the importance of human interaction in the workplace.
IV. Problems met while on training.
1. School related problems,
2. Company-related problems.
1. School-Related Problems
Balancing academic responsibilities and applying theoretical knowledge
in practical settings are common challenges faced by many students during their academic journey. Overcoming these challenges requires effective time management, prioritization, and extra effort to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
One of the major challenges I encountered was managing the demands of
my academic papers and the other SIT requirements while fulfilling the requirements of my on-the-job training. Juggling schoolwork with a full- time commitment to on-the-job training required me to employ effective time management and prioritize my tasks. This experience taught me the importance of organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Additionally, I found it challenging to apply theoretical knowledge
learned in school to practical tasks during my on-the-job training. There was often a disconnect between theory and practice, which necessitated extra effort to bridge. I had to engage in additional study and consult with my mentors to fully comprehend and apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios.
In conclusion, managing academic responsibilities while participating in
practical training and bridging the gap between theory and practice have been valuable learning experiences for me. These challenges have enhanced my time management skills, prioritization abilities, and the capacity to adapt theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.
2. Company-Related Problems
Adapting to the professional work environment and its demands
presented an initial challenge as I transitioned from a classroom setting to a fast-paced, hands-on workplace. Understanding complex electrical systems and unfamiliar equipment occasionally posed technical challenges, requiring additional learning and causing delays in task completion. Moreover, limited access to certain tools or materials at times hindered our work, prompting us to seek alternative solutions or wait for resources to become available. Additionally, the workplace environment was often noisy, especially when the generator was turned on, and there were instances when we forgot to wear our protective ear- gear. As an OJT student, I found the physical demands of the work to be quite challenging at times.
III. Suggestions and Recommendations (For the improvement of the curricula.)
I recommend enhancing the curriculum to better prepare students for their
On-the-Job Training (OJT) through several key initiatives. Firstly, there should be an increased emphasis on practical training, including more hands-on lab sessions and exercises that simulate real-world scenarios. This will bridge the gap between theory and practice, making students more confident and competent in applying their knowledge in actual work environments. Secondly, industry-specific workshops led by professionals should be introduced to expose students to current technologies and practices, ensuring they are up to date with industry standards. Lastly, a feedback mechanism and mentorship program should be established to provide students with valuable guidance and support during OJT training. Also, improve the processing of papers and requirements for OJT. Many of us got delayed and didn't start on the day that should start the training because of requirements. Be clear with the announcement.
In conclusion, by implementing the proposed curriculum enhancements and
streamlining the OJT paperwork and requirements, we can better prepare students for their On-the-Job Training (OJT) and ensure they are well- supported throughout the process.
