Types of Communicative Strategy

1. NOMINATION: u try to open a topic


2. RESTRICTION: limitation u may have as a speaker (u are typically given specific instructions that u
must follow)
3. TURN-TAKING: to give all communicators a chance to speak
4. TOPIC CONTROL: helps keep a conversation on a predetermined topic
5. TOPIC SHIFTING: moving one topic to another
6. REPAIR: how speakers address the problems in speaking listening and etc.
7. TERMINATION: close initiating expressions that end a topic in a conversation

Components of the speech writing process

 Conducting an audience analysis


- profile of your target audience
includes: demography(age range, male female ratio, and etc.) situation(time, venue, occasion, and size)
psychology(values, beliefs, and etc.)

 Determining the purpose of the speech


- classified into three:
INFORMATIVE SPEECH: with a clear understanding of the concept or idea presented by the speaker
ENTERTAINMENT SPEECH: provides the audience with amusement
PERSUASIVE SPEECH: well argued ideas that can influence their own beliefs and decisions

 Selecting a topic
- topic is ur focal point of your speech

 Narrowing down a topic


- means making your main idea more specific and focused

 Gathering data
- where u collect ideas, information, sources relevant or related to your specific topic

 Selecting a speech pattern


BIGRAPHICAL: presents descriptions of your life or of a person
CATEGORICAL/TOPICAL: presents related categories supporting the topic
CAUSAL: present cause and effect relationships
CHRONOLOGICAL: presents the idea in time order
COMPARISON/CONTRAST: compare or contrast of two or three points
PROBLEM SOLUTION: presents an identified problem, its causes, and recommended solutions
 Preparing an outline
- outline is a hierarchical list that shows the relationship of your ideas
Suggested formats: table formal and list format
Elements of outline; introduction, body, and conclusion

 Creating the body of the speech


- provides explanations, examples or any details that can help you deliver your purpose and explain the
main idea of your speech
Major consideration: focus or central idea
STRATEGIES: present real life or practical example, show statistics, present comparison, and share ideas
from the experts or practitioners

 Preparing the introduction


- foundation of your speech. Get the attention of ur audience.
STRATETIGES: use a real life experience, use practical example, start with a familiar os strong quote, use
fact or statistics, and tell a personal story

 Preparing the conclusion


- provides a summary, emphasizes the message, and call for action
- leave the audience with a memorable statement
STRATEGIES: begin with a restatement of ur message, use positive examples, and ask a question or series
of questions

 Editing and/or Revising


- Andrew Dlugan (2013) list 6 power principles of speech editing
EDIT FOR FOCUS; related to ur central message
EDIT FOR CLARITY: arranging them in logical order
EDIT FOR CONCISION: eliminating unrelated stories and sentences and use simple words
EDIT FOR CONTINUITY: adding transition words and phrases
EDIT FOR VARIETY: moving around the stage or adding humor
EDIT FOR IMPACT AND BEAUTY; use vivid descriptive images, and use figures of speech

 Rehearsing
- to identify what works and what does not work for you and for your target audience
(constant practice makes perfect)

Public Speaking
According to Stephen Lucas(2011), author of The Art of Public Speaking, a good delivery means that you
are capable and able to present your message clear, coherent, and interesting way.
Types of Speech According to Delivery
1. EXTEMPORENEOUS:
- speaking with limited preparation
- guided by notes or outline
- delivered conversationally
- most popular type
2. IMPROMPTU:
- speaking without advanced preparation
- unrehearsed speech
- spoken conversationally
3. MANUSCRIPT:
- advanced preparation
- planed and rehearsed speech
- reading aloud a written message
4. MEMORIZED:
- advanced preparation
- planned and rehearsed speech
- reciting a written message word for word from memory
