MODULE 6: IN ALL WEATHER


OPENER + UNIT 6a – Year after year
I/ Objectives
- To learn vocabulary for seasons, months, weather
- To listen/read for specific information
- To learn present progressive (affirmative & negative)
- To talk about the weather and describe pictures using present progressive.
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

Part Teacher's activities


1. Greeting
2. Warm-up: Brainstorming:
- Begin the lesson by asking ss to name the four seasons. Write them on the board. Then,
ask ss to brainstorm weather conditions associated with each season. Write their answers
under each season.

3. Opener
Opener (10’)
- Check if ss know about the months: T says aloud a number and ss say the
appropriate months.
- Elicits from Ss by asking “What are the spring/summer/fall/winter months?”
- Play the recording. Ss listen and repeat, either chorally or individually.
- Asks ss about their favorite season and reasons why.
Lead-in
- Ss look at pictures to tell the seasons and what they see in each one
- Ask ss about the weather in each picture.
- Tell ss that they are going to learn vocabulary about the weather.
Teach vocabulary
2/ Vocabulary - Play the recording once, pause at each word to have Ss listen and repeat chorally.
(10’) - Play the recording again and ask Ss to repeat individually.
Practice
- Show pictures of the weather. Ss look at them and say the appropriate words.
- Ask ss to use the words to describe today’s weather; what kind of weather they
like.
Listening
3/ Listening & - Have Ss look at the chart on p. 58.
Speaking (10’) - Refer Ss to the weather chart and explain what a weather chart is. Elicit where we would
see a chart like this (e.g., in a newspaper, on the news on TV, on the Internet, etc.).
- Explain what a degree is (a unit of measurement for temperature). Point out that °F is
read degrees Fahrenheit.
- Draw Ss’ attention to the pictures in the chart. Explain to Ss that the pictures will help
them understand what the weather is like in the different cities.
- Play the recording once. Have Ss listen and complete the chart individually.
- Play the recording twice if necessary. Check Ss’ answers as a whole class.
Speaking
- Draw Ss’ attention to the example.
- Have a pair of Ss read the example aloud.

- Have Ss ask and answer questions in pairs, as in the example while T walks around to
monitor and help if necessary.
- Have some pairs of Ss say the sentences aloud.
Pre-reading
4/ Reading - Ask ss: “What’s the weather like in Vietnam?”
(20’) - Prediction:
 Ss look at the text in page 59
 T calls individuals to answers questions:
“What is the text about?”
“What countries are mentioned in the text?”
While-reading
- T introduces the text: We are reading about the weather in different
countries.
- Play the recording for ss to follow and underline the words they don’t
know
- T writes new words on board and explains
- Ss repeat new words
- Ss take turns to read aloud parts of the text
Post-reading
Ex3 page 58
- Ss silently read the text again
- Ask ss to do Ex3 page 58
- T asks for answers and check them
Check understanding:
1. True or False:
 It is snowing in Ottawa, Canada.
 The temperature in New Orleans is 64°F.
 People are swimming and sunbathing in Adelaide, Australia.
 Buenos Aires is sunny and hot today.
 The temperature in New Orleans is higher than in Ottawa.
 In Buenos Aires, the weather is perfect for flying kites and having picnics.
2. Find a word from the text to match to its definition:

1. Present progressive (affirmative & negative)
5/ Grammar Lead in:
(20’) - Do some actions and ask ss “What am i doing?”. Invite a student to do some
actions in front of the class and ask “What is he/she doing?”. Ask ss “What are

you doing?”.
- After ss answer, T introduces that ss are going to learn about Present progressive
Presentation:
- Have Ss close their books. Write on the board: “I am reading. I am not sleeping
now.” Underline I am reading and I am not sleeping.
- Explain that this is the present progressive tense. Elicit the form of
affirmative/negative present progressive.
- Explain that we use this tense to talk about actions which are happening now.
- Have Ss open their books and look at the table. Explain the contracted forms.
2. Present the spelling rules.
- Introduce the spelling rules and have ss give examples for each rule.
Practice:
- Have Ss find examples of the present progressive in the text.
- Have Ss put the present progressive verbs they found in the text into the negative
form. Invite different Ss to come to the board and write their answers.
Ex5, pg 59
- Ask ss to do Ex5 individually
- Have several Ss take turns reading the text with their answers.
- Check Ss’ answers as a whole class.
Further activity:
- T can give ss handouts with exercises for practicing Present progressive and
spelling rules.
Ex6, pg 59
6/ Speaking - T explains that ss have to describe pictures on page 58. They should talk about the
(10’) weather, the temperature, people’s activities and feelings.
- Have Ss in pairs describe the picture to their partners using present progressive.
- Ask questions to prompt Ss to answer using the present progressive.
- Walk around the class and monitor the task. Check if Ss are using the present
progressive correctly.
- Have individual Ss describe the picture aloud in front of the class.

7/ Wrap-up - Ask ss what they have learned in the lesson, remind them of the homework
- Goodbye
