2.a) Implement 2-bit binary Ripple down Counter with neat sketch of its timing diagrams.

In the circuit design of the binary ripple counter, two JK flip flops are used. The high voltage signal is
passed to the inputs of both flip flops. This high voltage input maintains the flip flops at a state 1.
In JK flip flops, the negative triggered clock pulse used.
When the complemented output state (i.e. Q’) of previous FF is feed as clock to next FF then the
counter will perform down counting as you seen above (i.e. 3 2 1 0).
After 4th -ve edge clock pulse the sequence will repeat.
The outputs Q0 and Q1 are the LSB and MSB bits, respectively. The truth table of JK flip flop helps us
to understand the functioning of the counter.

3. Explain the working of JK flip flop along with its truth table.

JK flip flop operates on sequential logic principle, where the output is dependent not only on the
current inputs but also on the previous state. There are two inputs in JK Flip Flop Set and Reset
denoted by J and K. It also has two outputs Output and complement of Output denoted by Q and Q̅.
The internal circuitry of a JK Flip Flop consists of a combination of logic gates, usually NAND gates.
Truth table:

JK flip flop comprises four possible combinations of inputs: J=0, K=0; J=0, K=1; J=1, K=0; and J=1,
K=1. These input combinations determine the behaviour of flip flop and its output.
 J=0, K=0: In this state, flip flop retains its preceding state. It neither sets nor resets itself,
making it stable.
 J=0, K=1: This input combination forces flip flop to reset, resulting in Q=0 and Q̅=1. It is often
referred to as the “reset” state.
 J=1, K=0: Here, flip flop resides in the set mode, causing Q=1 and Q̅=0. It is known as the
“set” state.
 J=1, K=1: This combination toggles flip flop. If the previous state is Q=0, it switches to Q=1
and vice versa. i.e., it makes the output to be in Toggle state. This will be useful in frequency
division and data storage applications.

T Flip Flop does toggle the current situation. If the current is 0, change it to 1 and vice versa. T
makes with the combination of J and K inputs.

Symbol: Truth table:

T flip flop or to be precise is known as Toggle Flip Flop because it can able to toggle its output
depending upon on the input.
 “T” here stands for Toggle.
 Toggle basically indicates that the bit will be flipped i.e., either from 1 to 0 or from 0 to 1.
 Here, a clock pulse is supplied to operate this flop, hence it is a clocked flip-flop .

Circuit:

Case 1: Let’s say, T = 0 and clock pulse is high i.e, 1, then output of both, AND gate
1, AND gate 2 will be 0, gate 3 output will be Q and similarly gate 4 output will
be Q’ so both the values of Q and Q’ are same as their previous value, which
means Hold-state.
Case 2: Let’s say, T=1, then output of both AND gate 1 will be (T * clock * Q), and
since T and clock both are 1, then the output of AND gate 1 will be Q, and similarly
output of AND gate 2 will be (T * clock * Q’) i.e, Q’. Now, gate 3 output will
be (Q’+Q)’ and let’s say Q’ is zero, then gate 3 output will be (0+Q)’ which
means Q’ and similarly gate 4 output will be (Q+Q’)’ and since Q’ is zero, so gate 4
output will be Q’ which means 0 as Q’ is zero. Hence in this case we can say that the
output toggles, because T=1.

5.b) Compare the Combinational and Sequential Circuits.

A combinational circuit is a kind of digital electronic circuit of which outputs depend on the present
inputs and have no connections to the past inputs. These circuits do such tasks as additions,
subtractions and logically AND, OR and NOR circuits.

Sequential circuits are quite different from combinational circuits in the sense that they employ
memory components. A sequential circuit provides output based on current inputs as well as prior
inputs. These circuits have flip-flop or latch to store past state information.

1.What is the difference between fixed-point and floating-point representation?
Fixed-Point Representation: Numbers are represented with a fixed number of digits
before and after the decimal point. It has constant precision, limited range, and simpler
arithmetic, commonly used in embedded systems.
If we allocate 8 bits in total:
• 4 bits for the integer part.
• 4 bits for the fractional part.
Floating-Point Representation: Numbers are represented in scientific notation with
a sign, exponent, and mantissa. It offers a wide range, variable precision, and is suitable
for scientific and general-purpose computing.
If we use a 32-bit IEEE 754 single-precision format:
• Sign bit (1 bit): Determines if the number is positive (0) or negative (1).
• Exponent (8 bits): Encodes the position of the decimal point.
• Mantissa (23 bits): Stores the significant digits.
2.What is the role of the control unit in a processor?
The Control Unit (CU) manages and coordinates the execution of instructions in a
processor. It fetches, decodes, and executes instructions by generating control signals,
directing data flow, and synchronizing operations between the CPU, memory, and I/O
devices.
3.What is the concept of instruction execution in a CPU?
Instruction execution in a CPU follows the fetch-decode-execute cycle:
1. Fetch: The CPU retrieves the instruction from memory.
2. Decode: The instruction is interpreted to determine the required operation.
3. Execute: The CPU performs the operation using the ALU, registers, or memory as
needed.
This process repeats for each instruction in a program.
4.Write the process of binary multiplication using the shift-and-add method.
The shift-and-add method for binary multiplication involves:
1. Initialize the product to 0.
2. For each bit of the multiplier (starting from the least significant):
o If the bit is 1, add the multiplicand (shifted left by the bit's position) to the
product.
o Shift the multiplicand left by one position for the next step.
3. Repeat until all bits of the multiplier are processed.
5. What is the concept of two's complement and its significance in binary subtraction.
Two's complement is a method of representing signed binary numbers, where negative
numbers are obtained by inverting all bits of the positive number and adding 1. It simplifies
binary subtraction by converting it into addition, as subtracting a number is equivalent to
adding its two's complement. This eliminates the need for separate subtraction circuits in a
CPU.
6. Define signed and unsigned numbers in the context of binary arithmetic.
In binary arithmetic:
• Signed numbers represent both positive and negative values, using the most significant
bit (MSB) as the sign bit (0 for positive, 1 for negative).
• Unsigned numbers represent only non-negative values, with all bits used for magnitude.
1. Implement algorithm for binary addition and subtraction.
Addition (subtraction) algorithm: when the signs of A and B are identical (different), add the two
magnitudes and attach the sign of A to the result. When the signs of A and B are different
(identical), compare the magnitudes and subtract the smaller number from the larger. Choose the sign of
the result to be the same as A if A > B or the complement of the sign of A if A < B. If the two magnitudes
are equal, subtract B from A and make the sign of the result positive. The two algorithms are similar
except for the sign comparison. The procedure to be followed for identical signs in the addition
algorithm is the same as for different signs in the subtraction algorithm, and vice versa. Hardware
Implementation To implement the two arithmetic operations with hardware, it is first necessary that the
two numbers be stored in registers. Let A and B be two registers that hold the magnitudes of the
numbers, and A s and B s be two flip-flops that hold the corresponding signs. The result of the operation
may be transferred to a third register: however, a saving is achieved if the result is transferred into A
and As. Thus A and As together form an accumulator register. Consider now the hardware
implementation of the algorithms above. First, a paralleladder is needed to perform the micro-
operation A + B. Second, a comparator circuit is needed to establish if A > B, A = B, or A < B. Third, two
parallel-subtractor circuits are needed to perform the micro- operations A - B and B - A. The sign
relationship can be determined from an exclusive- OR gate with A s and B s as inputs. This procedure
requires a magnitude comparator, an adder, and two subtractors. However, a different procedure can
be found that requires less equipment. First, we know that subtraction can be accomplished by means
of complement and add. Second, the result of a comparison can be determined from the end carry after
the subtraction. Careful investigation of the alternatives reveals that the use of 2's complement for
subtraction and comparison is an efficient procedure that requires only an adder and a
complementer.
Figure shows a block diagram of the hardware for implementing the addition and subtraction operations.
It consists of registers A and B and sign flip-flops As and Bs. Subtraction is done by adding A to the 2's
complement of B. The output carry is transferred to flip-flop E, where it can be checked to determine the
relative magnitudes of the two numbers. The add-overflow flip-flop AVF holds the overflow bit when A
and B are added. The A register provides other micro-operations that may be needed when we specify
the sequence of steps in the algorithm.

Hardware Implementation:
Hardware Algorithm: The flowchart for the hardware algorithm is presented in below Figure. The two
signs As, and Bs are compared by an exclusive-OR gale. If the output of the gate is 0, the signs are identical;
if it is 1, the signs are different for an add operation, identical signs dictate that the magnitudes be
added.

2. a) Draw the flow chart of binary multiplication.


Figure shows a flowchart of the hardware multiply algorithm. Initially, the multiplicand is in B and the
multiplier in Q. Their corresponding signs are in Bs and Qs, respectively. The signs are compared, and
both A and Q are set to correspond to the sign of the product since a double- length product will be stored in
registers A and Q. Registers A and E are cleared and the sequence counter SC is set to a number equal to
the number of bits of the multiplier. We are assuming here that operands are transferred to registers
from a memory unit that has words of n bits. Since an operand must be stored with its sign, one bit of the
word will be occupied by the sign and the magnitude will consist of n — 1 bits.
After the initialization, the low-order bit of the multiplier in Qn is tested. If it is a 1, the multiplicand in B
is added to the present partial product in A. If it is a 0, nothing is done. Register EAQ is then shifted once
to the right to form the new partial product. The sequence 7 counter is decremented by 1 and its new value
checked. If it is not equal to zero, the process is repeated and a new partial product is formed. The process
stops when SC = 0. Note that the partial product formed in A is shifted into Q one bit at a time and
eventually replaces the multiplier. The final product is available in both A and Q, with A holding the
most significant bits and Q holding the least significant bits. The previous numerical example is repeated
in Table is shown to clarify the
hardware multiplication process. The procedure follows the steps outlined in the flowchart.
2.b) Explain the process of binary multiplication with Booths Algorithm.

The hardware implementation of Booth algorithm requires the register configuration shown in Figure.
We rename registers A, B, and Q, as AC, BR, and QR, respectively. Qn designates the least significant
bit of the multiplier in register QR. An extra flip-flop Qn+1 is appended to QR to facilitate a double bit
inspection of the multiplier. The flowchart for Booth algorithm is shown in Figure. AC and the appended
bit Qn+1 are initially cleared to 0 and the sequence counter SC is set to a number n equal to the number of
bits in the multiplier. The two bits of the multiplier in Qn and Qn+1 are inspected. If the two bits are equal
to 10, it means that the first 1 in a string of l's has been encountered. This requires a subtraction of the
multiplicand from the partial product in AC. If the two bits are equal to 01, it means that the first 0 in a
string of 0's has been encountered. This requires the addition of the multiplicand to the partial product in
AC. When the two bits are equal, the partial product does not change. An overflow cannot occur
because the addition and subtraction of the multiplicand follow each other. As a consequence, the
two numbers that are added always have opposite signs, a condition that excludes an overflow. The next
step is to shift right the partial product and the multiplier (including bit Qn+1). This is an arithmetic
shift right (ashr) operation which shifts AC and QR to the right and leaves the sign bit in AC unchanged.
The sequence counter is decremented and the computational loop is repeated n times.
A numerical example of Booth algorithm is shown in Table for n = 5. It shows the step-by-step
multiplication of (-9) x (-13) = +117. Note that the multiplier in QR is negative and that the
multiplicand in BR is also negative. The 10-bit product appears in AC and QR and is positive. The final
value of Qn+1 is the original sign bit of the multiplier and should not be taken as part of the product.
3.Describe the architecture of a basic CPU, including its main components (ALU, control
unit, registers) and their functions. Explain how these components interact during
instruction execution.
The architecture of a basic CPU (Central Processing Unit) involves several main components that work
together to execute instructions: the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), the Control Unit (CU), and Registers.
These components are essential to performing calculations, managing data, and controlling the
execution of instructions.
Main Components of a Basic CPU Architecture
1. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU):
o Function: The ALU is responsible for performing arithmetic operations (like
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and logical operations (such as AND,
OR, NOT, and XOR).
o Operation: The ALU receives data from the registers, executes the required
operation, and outputs the result, which is stored back in a register or memory.
2. Control Unit (CU):
o Function: The Control Unit manages and coordinates all activities in the CPU. It
interprets instructions from the program, directs data flow between the ALU,
registers, and memory, and ensures each operation occurs in the correct sequence.
o Operation: It uses a clock signal to control timing and sequence, sending control signals
to the ALU, registers, and memory to carry out instructions.
3. Registers:
o Function: Registers are small, fast storage locations within the CPU. They
temporarily hold data, instructions, or addresses for quick access during execution.
o Types of Registers:
▪ Program Counter (PC): Holds the address of the next instruction to be
executed.
▪ Instruction Register (IR): Stores the current instruction being executed.
▪ Accumulator (ACC): A special register that holds intermediate results of
arithmetic and logic operations.
▪ General Purpose Registers: Temporary storage for data or addresses during

workspace for the ALU and Control Unit.
Interaction of Components during Instruction Execution:
The CPU executes instructions in a sequence known as the Fetch-Decode-Execute Cycle.
4.a) Discuss the design and operation of different types of adders (ripple carry adder, carry
look-ahead adder).
Ripple Carry Adder
The block diagram of 4-bit Ripple Carry Adder is shown here below in Figure.1. It is possible
to create a logical circuit using multiple full adders to add N-bit numbers. Each full adder inputs a
Cin, which is the Cout of the previous adder. This kind of adder is called a ripple-carry adder,
since each carry bit "ripples" to the next full adder. Note that the first (and only the first) full adder
may be replaced by a half adder (under the assumption that Cin = 0). The block diagram of 4-bit

Ripple Carry Adder is shown here below –

Carry Look Ahead Adder
The Figure shows the full adder circuit used to add the operand bits in the i th column;
namely Ai & Bi and the carry bit coming from the previous column (Ci).

the carry-look ahead scheme can be built in the form of a tree-like circuit, which has a simple, regular
structure ,Gi is known as the carry Generate signal since a carry (Ci+1) is generated
whenever Gi =1, regardless of the input carry (Ci). Pi is known as the carry propagate signal since
whenever Pi =1, the input carry is propagated to the output carry, i.e., Ci+1. = Ci. Computing the
values of Pi and Gi only depend on the input operand bits (Ai & Bi) as clear from the Figure and
equations. Thus, these signals settle to their steady-state value after the propagation through their
respective gates. Computed values of all the Pi’s are valid one XOR- gate delay after the operands A
and B are made valid. Computed values of all the Gi’s are valid one AND-gate delay after the operands
A and B are made valid. The Boolean expression of the carry outputs of various stages can be written
as follows:

In general, the i th. carry output is expressed in the form Ci = Fi(P’s, G’s , C0). In other
words, each carry signal is expressed as a direct SOP function of C0 rather than its preceding
carry signal. Since the Boolean expression for each output carry is expressed in SOP form, it can
be implemented in two-level circuits. The 2- level implementation of the carry signals has a
propagation delay of 2 gates, i.e., 2τ.
The block diagram of 4-bit Carry Look Ahead Adder is shown here below:

4.b) Compare the performance of adders in terms of speed and complexity.


Arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division are basic operations to be
implemented in digital computers using basic gates like AND, OR, NOR, NAND etc. Among all the
arithmetic operations if we can implement addition then it is easy to perform multiplication
(by repeated addition), subtraction (by negating one operand) or division (repeated
subtraction). Half Adders can be used to add two one-bit binary numbers and Full adders to add two
three-bit numbers.
The design of a ripple-carry adder is simple, which allows for fast design time; however, the ripple-
carry adder is relatively slow when number of stages get increased, since each full adder must wait for
the carry bit to be calculated from the previous full adder.
The disadvantage of the ripple-carry adder is that it can get very slow when one needs to add many
bits.
To reduce the computation time, there are faster ways to add two binary numbers by using carry look
ahead adders. They work by creating two signals P and G known to be Carry Propagator and Carry
Generator. The carry propagator is propagated to the next level whereas the carry generator is used
to generate the output carry, regardless of input carry.

5.Demonstrate the purpose of a fast adder in computer arithmetic. Explain its working
procedure.
A fast adder is a digital circuit used in computer arithmetic to quickly compute the sum of binary
numbers. It is crucial in arithmetic operations where addition speed significantly impacts overall system
performance, such as in CPUs and other processors. The traditional binary addition process is relatively slow
because it involves carrying bits from one position to the next, which can create delays. Fast adders are
designed to address this by minimizing carry propagation delay, making them essential for efficient
arithmetic calculations in high-speed digital systems.
Purpose of a Fast Adder
The primary purpose of a fast adder is to reduce the time required to perform addition operations,
especially in circuits that require many such operations in quick succession. Traditional adders, like the
Ripple Carry Adder (RCA), add each bit sequentially and pass any carry bit to the next position, causing
delays as the adder "ripples" through each bit. Fast adders use specific techniques to minimize or eliminate
these delays, allowing the addition of multiple-bit binary numbers within a single clock cycle or a much
shorter delay than an RCA.
Types of Fast Adders
Some common types of fast adders are:
1. Carry-Lookahead Adder (CLA)
2. Carry-Skip Adder (CSA)
3. Carry-Select Adder (CSeA)
4. Carry-Save Adder (CSA)
Working Procedure of a Carry-Lookahead Adder (CLA)
The Carry-Lookahead Adder (CLA) is one of the most commonly used fast adders. Its design is based on
generating carry signals in advance rather than waiting for them to propagate from one bit position to the next.
Carry-Lookahead Adder (CLA) Basics
In binary addition, each bit addition produces two outputs: a sum bit and a carry bit. For each bit position
iii:
• AiA_iAi: Bit from operand A.
• BiB_iBi: Bit from operand B.
• SiS_iSi: Sum bit at position iii.
• CiC_iCi: Carry bit into position i+1i+1i+1.
The carry at each position depends on whether there is a "generate" or "propagate" condition for a carry at
that position:
1. Generate (G): A carry is generated at a specific bit position if both bits at that position are 1,
regardless of the input carry. This is defined as: Gi=Ai⋅BiG_i = A_i \cdot B_iGi=Ai⋅Bi
2. Propagate (P): A carry is propagated if at least one of the input bits is 1, meaning that if a carry
comes from the previous position, it will propagate through this position. This is defined as:
Pi=Ai+BiP_i = A_i + B_iPi=Ai+Bi
Using these, the carry for each bit can be calculated as: Ci+1=Gi+(Pi⋅Ci)C_{i+1} = G_i +
(P_i \cdot C_i)Ci+1=Gi+(Pi⋅Ci)
The CLA generates carries in parallel by calculating these values for all bit positions simultaneously,
eliminating the need to wait for carry propagation. This results in a faster addition operation.
Step-by-Step Operation of a CLA
For a 4-bit CLA, the operations proceed as follows:
1. Calculate Propagate and Generate Values:
o For each bit position (0 to 3), calculate PPP and GGG based on inputs AAA and BBB.
2. Calculate Carry Bits in Parallel:
o Using the propagate and generate values, calculate the carry bits:

1. Uniprogramming:
In the uniprogramming technique, the RAM is divided into two parts one part is for
the resigning the operating system and other portion is for the user process.
Here the border register is used which contain the last address of the operating system
parts. The operating system will compare the user data addresses with the fence
register and if it is different that means the user is not entering in the OS area. Border
register is also called boundary register and is used to prevent a user from entering in
the operating system area. Here the CPU utilization is very poor and hence
multiprogramming is used.
2. Multiprogramming:
In the multiprogramming, the multiple users can share the memory simultaneously.
By multiprogramming we mean there will be more than one process in the main
memory and if the running process wants to wait for an event like I/O then instead of
sitting ideal CPU will make a context switch and will pick another process.

processes when large free memory areas do not exist, e.g., initiation of process E would
be delayed in Example 4.8 even though the total free memory in the system exceeds the
size of E.
PAGING:

A non-contiguous policy with a fixed size partition is called paging. A computer can address
more memory than the amount of physically installed on the system. This extra memory is
actually called virtual memory. Paging technique is very important in implementing virtual
memory.

Secondary memory is divided into equal size partition (fixed) called pages. Every process
will have a separate page table. The entries in the page table are the number of pages a
process. At each entry either we have an invalid pointer which means the page is not in
main memory or we will get the corresponding frame number. Similarly, main memory is
divided into small fixed-sized blocks of (physical) memory called frames and the size of a
frame is kept the same as that of a page to have optimum utilization of the main memory
and to avoid external fragmentation.
When the frame number is combined with instruction of set D than we will get the
corresponding physical address. Size of a page table is generally very large so cannot be
accommodated inside the PCB, therefore, PCB contains a register value PTBR (page table
base register) which leads to the page table.
SEGMENTATION:

Segmentation is a programmer view of the memory where instead of dividing a process into
equal size partition we divided according to program into partition called segments. The
translation is the same as paging but paging segmentation is independent of internal
fragmentation but suffers from external fragmentation. Reason of external fragmentation is
program can be divided into segments but segment must be contiguous in nature.

Segmentation is a memory management technique in which each job is divided into several
segments of different sizes, one for each module that contains pieces that perform related
functions. Each segment is actually a different logical address space of the program. When a
process is to be executed, its corresponding segmentation is loaded into non-contiguous
memory though every segment is loaded into a contiguous block of available memory.

Segmentation memory management works very similar to paging but here segments are of
variable length where as in paging pages are of fixed size. A program segment contains the
program's main function, utility functions, data structures, and so on.

The operating system maintains a segment map table for every process and a list of free
memory blocks along with segment numbers, their size and corresponding memory locations
in main memory. For each segment, the table stores the starting address of the segment and
the length of the segment. A reference to a memory location includes a value that identifies
a segment and an offset.

improves system performance.
Cache Memory
The cache memory is one of the fastest memory. Though it is costlier than the main memory
but more useful than the registers. The cache memory basically acts as a buffer between the
main memory and the CPU. Moreover, it synchronizes with the speed of the CPU. Besides, it
stores the data and instructions which the CPU uses more frequently so that it does not have
to access the main memory again and again. There-fore the average time to access the main
memory decreases.
It is placed between the main memory and the CPU. Moreover, for any data, the CPU first
checks the cache and then the main memory.

Levels of Cache Memory


There can be various levels of cache memory, they are as follows:
Level 1 (L1) or Registers
It stores and accepts the data which is immediately stores in the CPU. For example,
instruction register, program counter, accumulator, address register, etc.
Level 2 (L2) or Cache Memory
It is the fastest memory that stores data temporarily for fast access by the CPU.
Moreover, it has the fastest access time.
Level 3 (L3) or Main Memory
It is the main memory where the computer stores all the current data. It is a volatile
memory which means that it loses data on power OFF.
Level 4 (L4) or Secondary Memory
It is slow in terms of access time. But the data stays permanently in this memory.
Types of Cache Memory
There are two types, as follows:
Primary Cache
It’s located on the processor chip always. Besides, its access time is comparable to
the processor.
Secondary Cache
This memory is present between the primary cache and the main memory. Besides,
we can also call it level 2 (L2) cache.
Basic Operations of Cache Memory
Its basic operations are as follows:
 The CPU first checks any required data in the cache. Furthermore, it does not access
the main memory if that data is present in the cache.
 On the other hand, if the data is not present in the cache, then it accesses the main
memory.
 The block of words that the CPU accesses currently is transferred from the main
memory to the cache for quick access in the future.
 The hit ratio defines the performance of the cache memory.
Cache Performance
The performance of the cache is in terms of the hit ratio.
The CPU searches the data in the cache when it requires writing or read any data from the
main memory. In this case, two cases may occur as follows:
 If the CPU finds that data in the cache, a cache hit occurs and it reads the data from
the cache.
 On the other hand, if it does not find that data in the cache, a cache miss occurs.
Furthermore, during cache miss, the cache allows the entry of data and then reads
data from the main memory.
 Therefore, we can define the hit ratio as the number of hits divided by the sum of hits
and misses.

A cache memory sits between the central processor and the main memory. During
any particular memory cycle, the cache checks the memory address being issued by the
processor. If this address matches the address of one of the few memory locations held in
the cache, the cache handles the memory cycle very quickly; this is called a cache hit. If
the address does not, then the memory cycle must be satisfied far more slowly by the main
memory; this is called a cache miss.

The correspondence between the main memory and cache is specified by a Mapping
function.

Mapping Functions:
There are three main mapping techniques which decides the cache organization:
1. Direct-mapping technique
2. Associative mapping Technique
3. Set associative mapping technique

Direct-mapping technique:

 The simplest technique is direct mapping that maps each block of main memory into
only one possible cache line.
 Here, each memory block is assigned to a specific line in the cache.
 If a line is previously taken up by a memory block and when a new block needs to be
loaded, then the old block is replaced.
 Consider a 128block cache memory. Whenever the main memory blocks 0, 128, 256
are loaded in the cache, they will be allotted cache block 0, since j= (0 or 128 or 256)
% 128 is zero).
 Contention or collision is resolved by replacing the older contents with latest contents.
 The placement of the block from main memory to the cache is determined from the 16-
bit memory address. The lower order four bits are used to select one of the 16 words
in the block.
 The 7-bit block field indicates the cache position where the block has to be stored.
 The 5-bit tag field represents which block of main memory resides inside the cache.
This method is easy to implement but is not flexible.
 Drawback: The problem was that every block of main memory was directly mapped to
the cache memory. This resulted in high rate of conflict miss. Cache memory has to be
very frequently replaced even when other blocks in the cache memory were present as
empty.

Associative Mapping:
 The associative memory is used to store content and addresses ofthe memory
word. Any block can go into any line of the cache.
 The 4-bit word id bits are used to identify which word in the block is needed and the
remaining 12 bits represents the tag bit that identifies the main memory block
inside the cache.
 This enables the placement of any word at any place in the cache memory. It is
considered to be the fastest and the most flexible mapping form.
 The tag bits of an address received from the processor are compared to the tag
bits of each block of the cache to check, if the desired block is present. Hence it is
known as Associative Mapping technique.
 Cost of an associated mapped cache is higher than the cost of direct-mapped
because of the need to search all 128 tag patterns to determine whether a block is
in cache.

Set associative mapping:


 It is the combination of direct and associative mapping technique. Cache blocks are
grouped into sets and mapping allow block of main memory to reside into any block of
a specific set.
 This reduces contention problem (issue in direct mapping) with low hardware cost
(issue in associative mapping.
 Consider a cache with two blocks per set. In this case, memory block map into cache
set 0 and they can occupy any two blocks within this set.
 It does this by saying that instead of having exactly one line that a block can map to in
the cache, we will group a few lines together creating a set.
 Then a block in memory can map to any one of the lines of a specific set.
 The 6-bit set field of the address determines which set of the cache might contain the
desired block. The tag bits of address must be associatively compared to the tags of
the two blocks of the set to check if desired block is present.

Page tables:
A computer can address more memory than the amount physically installed on the system.
This extra memory is actually called virtual memory and it is a section of a hard that's set up to
emulate the computer's RAM. Paging technique plays an important role in implementing virtual
memory.
Paging is a memory management technique in which process address space is broken into
blocks of the same size called pages (size is power of 2, between 512 bytes and 8192 bytes).
The size of the process is measured in the number of pages.Similarly, main memory is divided
into small fixed-sized blocks of (physical) memory called frames and the size of a frame is kept
the same as that of a page to have optimum utilization of the main memory and to avoid
external fragmentation.

In virtual memory, blocks of memory are mapped from one set of addresses (virtual addresses)
to another set (physical addresses). The processor generates virtual addresses while the
memory is accessed using physical addresses. Both the virtual memory and the physical
memory are broken into pages, so that a virtual page is really mapped to a physical page. Itis
also possible for a virtual page to be absent from main memory and not be mapped to a
physical address, residing instead on disk. Physical pages can be shared by having two virtual
addresses point to the same physical address. This capability is used to allow two different
programs to share data or code. Virtual memory also simplifies loading the program for
execution by providing relocation. Relocation maps the virtual addresses used by a program to
different physical addresses before the addresses are used to access memory. This relocation
allows us to load the program anywhere in main memory.

The basic mechanism for reading a word from memory involves the translation of a virtual or
logical address, consisting of page number and offset, into a physical address, consisting of
frame number and offset, using a page table. There is one page table for each process. But
each process can occupy huge amount of virtual memory. But the virtual memory of a process
cannot go beyond a certain limit which is restricted by the underlying hardware of the MMU.
One of such components may be the size of the virtual address register. The sizes of pages
are relatively small and so the size of page table increases as the size of process increases.
Therefore, size of page table could be unacceptably high. To overcome this problem, most
virtual memory scheme store page table in virtual memory rather than in real memory. When a
process is running, at least a part of its page table must be in main memory, including the page
table entry of the currently executing page.
Each virtual address generated by the processor is interpreted as virtual page number (high
order list) followed by an offset (lower order bits) that specifies the location of a particular word
within a page. Information about the main memory location of each page kept in a page table

Segment tables:
When an address is specified as a tuple, the hardware translates it to a physical address using
the segment table. The sement table of the current process is kept in memory and is
referenced by two hardware registers, the segment-table base register (STBR) and
the segment-table length register (STLR). The hardware checks the entry in the table specified
by the offset number of find the base address of the segment. If the segment-number is out-of-
bounds, the address is not valid. It then checks the limit to ensure that the offset is less than the
limit. If the offset is not less than the limit, the address is invalid. If the address is valid, it is
translated to physical address base+offset.

EPROM: -Erasable reprogrammable ROM:


 EPROM allows the stored data to be erased and new data to be loaded.

as a disabled transistor that is always turned off.
 This transistor can be programmed to behave as a permanently open switch, by
injecting charge into it that becomes trapped inside.
 Erasure requires dissipating the charges trapped in the transistor of memory cells.
This can be done by exposing the chip to ultra-violet light, so that EPROM chips

takes typically quite long. The drawback of EEPROM is their speed. EEPROM chips are too

EEPROMs are found in electronics devices for storing the small amounts of nonvolatile data in
applications where speed is not the most important. Small EEPROMs with serial interfaces are
commonly found in many electronics devices.
Flash Memory:
 In EEPROM, it is possible to read & write the contents of a single cell.
 In Flash device, it is possible to read the contents of a single cell but it is only
possible to write the entire contents of a block.
 Prior to writing, the previous contents of the block are erased. Eg. In MP3
player, the flash memory stores the data that represents sound.
 Single flash chips cannot provide sufficient storage capacity for embedded
system application.
