1 OBSERVATION

Part 1: Measurement of Source Frequency using a Cavity Wave Meter

When the meter reading on the console meter of about 4 mA,
Micrometer reading = 12.15mm
Therefore, according to the E011 mode calibration curve,
The frequency of the microwave signals = 10.2 GHz

Part 2: Measurement of Guide Wavelength
Initial Position = 10mm

Position Micrometer reading

First Position 15mm
Second Position 34mm
Third Position 53mm
2 DISCUSSION

Part 1:
Calculate the theoretical value for frequency and compare it with the experimental value obtained
from the calibration curve in Figure 3.
Theoretical value for frequency (f) can be calculated using below equation,
1
𝐿= 𝑛λ
2 g
Rearranging the above equation,
2𝐿
λg =
𝑛

By considering first order of resonance n = 1;

2 × 12.15 × 10−3
=
1
λg = 0.0243𝑚 = 24.3𝑚𝑚

Taking Broad dimension (a) = 22.86mm,

λc = 2 × 𝑎

λc = 2 × 22.86

λc = 45.72𝑚𝑚

1 1 1
2 = 2
− 2
λg λ λc

1 1 1
2
= 2−
24.3 λ 45.722

λ = 21.45mm

𝑐
𝑓=
λ

3 × 108
𝑓=
0.02145

𝑓 = 13.99 𝐺𝐻𝑧
Part 2:
Calculate the guide wave length, Ig by using experimental results obtained.
The difference between consecutive nulls is 34 -15 = 19 mm
So, Guided wave length (λg ) can be calculated as below,
λg
= 19 mm
2

∴ λg = 38 𝑚𝑚
