Mixing is a crucial unit operation in various industries, defined as the combination of different materials to achieve a homogeneous product. Applications span across chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, utilizing various mixing equipment such as kneaders and blenders. The choice between batch and continuous mixing depends on factors like material quantity, desired homogeneity, and operational requirements.

MIXING OF SOLIDS
Dr. Asim H. Rizvi
Assistant Professor Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology University of the Punjab Mixing • Mixing is defined as a unit operation whereby two or more different materials are
combined to create a product that is fairly homogenous.
• Modern industrial processing almost always involves some form of mixing.
Some Applications of Mixing: • Chemical Process Industry: Mixing and blending of specialty chemicals, explosives, fertilizers, dry powdered detergents, glass or ceramics, and rubber compounds. • Pharmaceutical Industry: Blending of active ingredients of a drug with excipients like starch, cellulose, or lactose. • Foodindustry: Preparation of spices, flavors, cake mix, cereals, soft drink premixes. Shear Blending Material properties affecting mixing Solid-Solid Mixing/Blending Equipment
Kneaders, banbury mixers, roll mill, pug mill, mixer extruders.
Modes of Operation of Mixing Equipment Continuous mixing and batch mixing are the two modes of mixing operation.
While some types of mixers are only suitable for either batch or continuous operations, some other types can be adapted for operation in both batch and continuous modes.
The selection of batch or continuous mixer depends on several factors which
include: • quantity of the material to be mixed • desired standards of homogeneity of product mix • pre-mixing operations and material handling equipment, post-mixing operations and any multiple product formulation requirement.
