General Instructions:
1. All questions are compulsory. There are 33 questions in all.
2. This question paper has five sections : Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
3. Section A contains ten very short answer questions and four assertion reasoning MCQs of 1 mark
each.
Section B has two case based questions of 4 marks each,
Section C contains nine short answer questions of 2 marks each,
Section D contains five short answer questions of 3 marks each and
Section E contains three long answer questions of 5 marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However internal choice is provided. You have to attempt only one of the
choices in such questions.
SECTION - A
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt anyone of them.
1. For what distance is ray optics a good approximation, when the aperture is 4 mm wide and the
wavelength is 500 nm ?
2. The sun delivers 104 W / m2 of electromagnetic flux to the earth’s surface. Calculate the total power
that is incident on a roof of dimensions (10 × 10) m2.
3. Pure silicon at 300 K has equal number of electron (ne) and hole (nh) concentration of 1.5 × 1016 m-3.
Doping by indum increases number of holes to 4.5 × 1022m-3 . Calculating the number of electrons is
doped silicon.
OR
Find the internal resistance of a 2.1 V cell which gives a current of 0.2 A through a resistance of 10 Ω .
4. A hydrogen nucleus moves in a circle of radius 1m in 1s. Calculate the magnetic field produced at the
centre of the circle.
5. The phase difference between two light waves reaching at any point is 50 π . Find out their path
difference.
OR
A small telescope has an objective of focal length 130 cm and eyepiece of focal length 4 cm.
Calculate the magnitude of magnifying power of a telescope.
8. The de - Broglie wavelength associated with an electron accelerated through a potential differences V
is λ . What will be its wavelength when the accelerating potential is increased to 4 V ?

9. Two semiconductor materials X and Y shown in figure are made by shopping a germanium crystal
with indium and arsenic, respectively. These are joined end to end and connected to a battery as
shown in figure below.
Will the junction be forward of reverse biased ? give reason for your answer.
10. A diverging lens of focal length F is cut into two identical parts. What is the focal length of each part?

How does the fringe width in YDSE change when the distance of separation between the slits and the
screen is quadrupled ?
For question number 11, 12, 13 and 14, two statements are given - one labelled
Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from

15. Potential difference ( Δ V) between two points A and B separated by a distance x, in a uniform electric
field E is given by Δ V = - EX, where x is measured parallel to the filed lines. If a charge q0 moves from
A to B, the change in potential energy (ΔU ) os given as ΔU = q 0 ΔV . A proton is released from rest in
uniform electric field of magnitude 8.0 × 104 Vm-1 directed along the positive X- axis. The proton

17. (i) State Kirchhoff’s loop rule for an electrical network.
(ii) State and explain the principle of working on a meter bridge.
18. At a certain location in Africa, a compass points 120 West of the geographic North. The North tip of
the magnetic needle of a dip circle placed in the plane of magnetic meridian points 600 above the
horizontal. The horizontal component of the earth’s field is measured to be 0.16 G. Specify the
direction and magnitude of the earth's field at the location.
20. Show that for near normal viewing from rarer to denser medium refractive index of the denser
medium r μd can be expressed as

Using Huygens principle, when an oblique wavefront is incident on the reflecting surface making an
angle of incidence i with the surface, show that it gets reflected making the same angle.
21. (i) Write the conditions under which light sources can be said to be coherent.
(ii) Specify the ways in which coherent sources can be produced.
OR
Write the relation between the fringe width and frequency of light in a two sources interference
pattern and draw a graph showing the relation between them.

22. (i) An old saying suggests that it is more safe to run fast than walk during an overhead lightning storm
and it has been observed that cattlers are more likely to be killed by a nearby lightning strike than
humans. Comment.
(ii) Why is a person sitting in a car during thunderstorms, not likely to be struck by lightning ?
23. The resistivity of pure silicon is 3000 Ω − m and the electron & hole mobilities are 0.12 m2 V-1 s-1 and
0.045 m2 V-1 s-1 respectively, determine
(i) the resistivity of a specimen of the material when 1019 atoms of phosphorus are added per m3.
(ii) the resistivity of the specimen, if further 2 × 1019 boron atoms per m3 are also added.
OR
Assuming that the two diodes D1 and D2 used in the electric circuit as shown in the figure are ideal,
find out the value of the current flowing through 1 Ω resistor.
24. Threshold frequency of metal is f0. When light of frequency 2f0 is incident on a metal plate, the
maximum velocity of the electron emitted is v1 . When frequency of incident radiation is increased to
5f0, maximum velocity of electrons emitted is v2. Find the ratio v1 to v2.
25. Draw a labelled diagram of a full wave rectifier. State its principle of working.
SECTION - D
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt anyone.
26. (i) Two circular coils, one of radius r and other of radius R are placed co-axially with their centres
coinciding. For R >> r obtain an expression for mutual inductance of the arrangement.
(ii) the magnetic flux through a coil perpendicular to the plane is given by Φ = 5t3 + 4t2 + 2t.
Calculate induced emf through the coil at t = 2s.
OR
(i) The current through an AC is
I = I 0 (t/τ )
Determine the rms current through the circuit over time interval t = 0 to τ .
(ii) Show that the heat produced in a cycle of AC is same as the heat produced by DC with I = I rms .
27. The oscillating electric field is Ey = 30 sin [2 × 1011t + 300 π x ] Vm-1
(i) Obtain the value of the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave.
(ii) Write down the expression for the oscillating magnetic field.
28. State Gauss’s law in electrostatics. Using this law, derive an expression for the electric field due to a
uniformly charged infinite plane sheet.

Two insulated rods A and B are oppositely charged on their ends. They are mounted at the centres, so
that they are free to rotate and then held in the position shown in the figure, in a view from above. The
rods rotate in the plane of the paper. Will the rods stay in those positions when released ? If not, then
what positions will they move ? Will their final configurations be stable ?
29. Force on a charge due to electric field is given by FE = qE and force due magnetic field is given by FB =
w(v × B) . In a certain region of space, both electric and magnetic field exist mutually perpendicular to
each other. If an electron enters this region perpendicular to both E and B and passes out undeflected,
find the velocity of the electron.
30. A hydrogen atom initially in ground level absorbs a photon, which excites it to n = 5 level. Determine
the wavelength and frequency of the photon.
SECTION - E

31. An alternating emf E = E0 sin ω t is applied as an input in a purely resistive circuit of resistance R.
(i) What is the current in the circuit ?
(ii) What is the phase difference between the emf and the current ?
(iii) Draw the graphical representation of the emf and the current.
(iv) Draw the phasor diagram for a purely resistive circuit.
(v) A resistance of 10 Ω is connected to a AC rated 110 V, 50 Hz. Then, find the rms current
OR
Explain with the help of a labelled diagram, the principle and working of an AC generator. Deduce the
expression for alternating emf induced in the generator when the coil rotates with angular velocity ω .

32. (i) Derive the lens formula , f = v − u for a concave lens, using the necessary ray diagram.
(ii) The image of a small electric bulb fixed on the wall of rooms is to be obtained on the opposite
wall 4 m away by means of a large convex lens. What is the maximum possible focal length of the
lens required for this purpose ?
OR
Figure below shows an equi - convex lens (of refractive index 1.50) in contact with a liquid layer on top
of a plane mirror. A small needle with its tip on the principal axis is moved along the axis until its
inverted image is found at the position of the needle. The distance of the needle from the lens is
measured to be 50 cm. The liquid is removed and the experiment is repeated. The new distance is
measured to be 30.0 cm. What is the refractive index of the liquid ?
