Measuring current and voltage in a parallel circuit
In this investigation, you will investigate how the current and voltage through a battery
depends on the number of identical branches in a parallel circuit.
Safety: Ask your teacher to check your circuits. Switch off before changing components.
You will need: Four or six identical lamps, battery or cells /1.5V / or suitable power supply to
light up to six lamps in parallel, switch, ammeter, voltmeter, leads, connectors.
Method:
8. Connect the voltmeter across the battery. Measure and record this voltage.
9. Record the voltmeter and ammeter readings once again and determine the total
resistance of the parallel circuit using
Questions
1. The table is well-structured — just make sure it’s clear that resistance can be
calculated using Ohm’s law:
2. The graph instruction makes sense! You might clarify that the line could be a curve
(since the current should increase with more lamps in parallel).
3. (a) Describe how the current increases with the number of lamps.
(b) When lamps are added in parallel, the total resistance decreases, so the current
through the battery increases.
(c) Explain how adding more parallel branches provides additional pathways for the
current, reducing the overall resistance of the circuit.
4. Use your results to predict the current through the battery if you had six lamps in
parallel.
5. Explain the advantages of parallel circuits in household applications. Why are most
home electrical circuits wired in parallel? Use your results and Ohm's law to explain.
