Problem class chap 1.1

The document consists of a series of mathematical problems related to ordinary differential equations (ODEs), including determining the order and linearity of various ODEs, verifying solutions for given functions, and confirming implicit solutions for first-order differential equations. It also includes verifying a family of functions as solutions to a differential equation and checking a system of differential equations. Each problem requires specific mathematical techniques and assumptions about intervals of definition.

1. State the order of the following ODEs, then determine if they are linear or nonlinear.

a) (1-x)y'' - 4xy' + 5y = cos x b) x ( )

d 3 y dy 4

dx 3 dx

dx 2 dx dr 2 dr

2. Verify that the indicated function is a solution of the given ODE. Assume an appropriate
interval of definition I for each solution.

a) ODE 2y' + y = 0; function y = e-x/2

b) ODE y'' - 6y' + 13y = 0; function y = e3x cos 2x

3. Verify that the indicated function y = (x) is a solution of the given first-order differential
equation. Then, considering (x) simply as a function, give its domain. Then, by considering (x) as a
solution of the ODE, give one interval of definition I.

ODE y' = 25 + y2; y = (x) = 5 tan 5x

4. Verify that the indicated expression is an implicit solution of the given first-order differential
equation.

2xy dx + (x2 - y)dy = 0; -2x2y + y2 = 1

5. Verify that the indicated family of functions is a solution of the given differential equation.
Assume an appropriate interval of definition for each solution.

6. Verify that the indicated pair of functions is a solution of the given system of differential
equations on the interval (-,).
