Unit 5 Study Guide- 7th Math

This study guide covers the steps for solving equations and inequalities, including identifying, simplifying, isolating the variable, and checking solutions. It provides examples for both equations and inequalities, along with practice problems and word problems for application. The guide emphasizes the importance of graphing solutions for inequalities on a number line.

Study Guide- Chapter 5 Solving equations and inequalities:

Solving Equations

1. Identify the Equation:

( 2x + 3 = 11 )

2. Simplify Both Sides:

Combine like terms if necessary. In this example, both sides are already simplified.

3. Isolate the Variable:

Step 1: Subtract 3 from both sides to isolate the term with the variable.
( 2x + 3 - 3 = 11 - 3 )
( 2x = 8 )
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2 to solve for ( x ).
( \frac{2x}{2} = \frac{8}{2} )
(x=4)

4. Check Your Solution:

Substitute ( x = 4 ) back into the original equation to verify.

( 2(4) + 3 = 11 )
( 8 + 3 = 11 )

The solution is correct.

Solving Inequalities

1. Identify the Inequality:

Example: ( 3x - 5 \leq 10 )

2. Simplify Both Sides:

Combine like terms if necessary. In this example, both sides are already simplified.

3. Isolate the Variable:

Step 1: Add 5 to both sides to isolate the term with the variable.
( 3x - 5 + 5 \leq 10 + 5 )
( 3x \leq 15 )
Step 2: Divide both sides by 3 to solve for ( x ).

( \frac{3x}{3} \leq \frac{15}{3} )

( x \leq 5 )

Example Inequality:
Solve the inequality 2x−3>52x−3>5.

Steps to Solve:

Add 3 to both sides:

4. 2x−3+3>5+32x−3+3>5+3
5. 2x>82x>8
Divide both sides by 2:
6. 2x2>8222x >28
7. x>4x>4
Graphing the Solution:
Draw a number line.
Use an open circle at x=4 because the inequality is strict (greater than, not greater than or
equal to).
Shade the region to the right of 4 to indicate all values greater than 4.

Graph the Solution:

Draw a number line and plot ( x \leq 5 ).

Use a closed circle at 5 and shade to the left.
Practice Problems

Solving Equations:

x + 7 = 12 5x = 35 3x + 5 = 20 4x + 8 = 24

X=5
X=7 X=5 X=4

x-4 =9 x/3 = 6 2x - 7 = 13 2x/5 + 3 = 7

X=13 X=18 X=10 X=10

Solving Inequalities: Graph the highlighted problems

x + 4 < 10 3x > 15 2x + 3 <11 4x - 5 > 7

X<6 X>5
_
x-5>2 x/2 < 8 3x + 6 >15 x/4 - 2 < 10

Word Problems:
