Parts of Speech - Class 10

In English grammar, parts of speech categorize words based on their function


and usage in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech, explained
below:

1. Noun

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

Types of Nouns:

Proper Noun: Names a specific entity (e.g., India, Sarah).

Common Noun: Refers to general names (e.g., city, teacher).

Abstract Noun: Refers to intangible ideas (e.g., happiness, freedom).

Concrete Noun: Refers to tangible things (e.g., table, apple).

Collective Noun: Refers to groups (e.g., team, flock).

Examples:
The dog is barking.

He lives in Delhi.

2. Pronoun

A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repetition.

Types of Pronouns:

Personal Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

Possessive Pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers.

Reflexive Pronouns: myself, yourself.

Relative Pronouns: who, whom, whose, which.

Demonstrative Pronouns: this, that, these, those.

Examples:
He is a good boy.

3. Verb

A verb expresses an action, state, or occurrence.

Types of Verbs:

Action Verbs: run, eat, write.

Linking Verbs: is, seem, become.

Helping Verbs: will, have, can.

4. Adjective

An adjective describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.

Types of Adjectives:

Descriptive: beautiful, tall, smart.

Quantitative: some, many, few.

Demonstrative: this, that, these, those.

Comparative: taller, better.

Superlative: tallest, best.

Examples:

A red rose.

She is a smart student.

5. Adverb

An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Types of Adverbs:

Manner: quickly, slowly.

Time: yesterday, now.

Place: here, there.

Frequency: always, sometimes.

Degree: very, too.

Examples:

He speaks softly.

She arrived early.

6. Preposition

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other
words in the sentence.

Examples:

The book is on the table.

He walked through the park.

7. Conjunction

A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.

Types of Conjunctions:

Coordinating: and, but, or.


Subordinating: because, although, if.

Correlative: either...or, neither...nor.

Examples:

She likes tea and coffee.

I stayed home because it was raining.

8. Interjection

An interjection expresses emotion or sudden feelings.

Examples:

Wow! That’s amazing.

Ouch! That hurt.
