The parts of speech are the basic categories of words in the English language, each serving a
specific function in sentences. There are eight main parts of speech:
1. Noun
o A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.
o Types:
Common Noun – cat, city, book
Proper Noun – John, Paris, Titanic
Abstract Noun – love, courage, happiness
Concrete Noun – table, phone, dog
Collective Noun – team, herd, bunch
Countable Noun – apple, cars, bottles
Uncountable Noun – water, sand, air
o Example: "The dog is barking."
2. Pronoun
o A pronoun replaces a noun in a sentence.
o Types:
Personal Pronouns – he, she, it, they
Possessive Pronouns – mine, yours, theirs
Reflexive Pronouns – myself, yourself
Demonstrative Pronouns – this, that, these
Interrogative Pronouns – who, what, which
Relative Pronouns – who, whom, whose
o Example: "She loves reading."
3. Verb
o A verb expresses an action or state of being.
o Types:
Action Verbs – run, jump, write
Linking Verbs – is, seem, become
Helping Verbs – has, will, should
o Example: "He runs every morning."
4. Adjective
o An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
o Types:
Descriptive Adjective – beautiful, tall
Quantitative Adjective – some, many, few
Demonstrative Adjective – this, those
Possessive Adjective – my, your, their
Interrogative Adjective – which, what
o Example: "She wore a red dress."
5. Adverb
o An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
o Types:
Manner – quickly, happily
Time – yesterday, now
Place – here, everywhere
Frequency – always, never
o Example: "He speaks fluently."
6. Preposition
o A preposition shows a relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word
in the sentence.
o Types:
Place – in, on, under
Time – before, after, during
Direction – to, into, from
o Example: "The book is on the table."
7. Conjunction
o A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.
o Types:
Coordinating Conjunctions – and, but, or
Subordinating Conjunctions – because, although
Correlative Conjunctions – either...or, neither...nor
o Example: "I like tea and coffee."
8. Interjection
o An interjection expresses emotion or sudden exclamation.
o Example: "Wow! That’s amazing."

Tense refers to the time of an action or event. There are three main tenses, each with four
subcategories:
