Introduction

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the basic concepts, techniques and tools of engineering drawing

and graphics as a language of communication.

2. Draw 2-D and 3D Drawings/Sketches using AutoCAD drawing and editing

tools.

3. Draw projects related to Civil Engineering applications by use of DESIGN

CENTER tool in AutoCAD.
Introduction

Effectiveness of Graphic Language

1. Try to write a description of this object.
2. Test your written description by having
someone attempt to make a sketch
from your description

You can easily understand that….

The word languages are inadequate for describing the size, shape and features
completely as well as concisely

Composition of Graphic Language

Graphic language in “engineering application” uses lines to represent surfaces,

edges and shapes of objects.

➢ The Language is known as drawing or drafting

➢A drawing can be done using freehand, instruments or computer methods

What is Engineering Drawing?

Drawing is a two dimensional representation of three dimensional

objects. In general, it provides necessary information about the shape,
size, surface quality, material, manufacturing process etc. of the objects.
It is the graphic language from which a trained person can visualize
objects
Introduction

Types of Engineering Drawing?

1. Sketch
A sketch is a quick, rough drawing or outline capturing the main features of
something.
• Freehand drawing
• Not drawn to a scale

i. Plan
Plan is a detailed, often scaled, representation of a project or area, showing precise
arrangements and dimensions.
• Drawn to a scale
• Drawn with the aid of drafting equipment/computer

What are the functions of engineering drawing?

Drawings convey the following critical information:

• Geometry – the shape of the object; represented as views; how the object will
look when it is viewed from various angles, such as front, top, side, and so on.

• Dimensions – the size of the object is captured in accepted units.

• Tolerances – the allowable variations from the nominal size for each dimension. •
Material – represents what the item is made of.

• Finish – specifies the surface quality of the item, functional or cosmetic.

Introduction
Role of Engineering Drawing
■ The ability to read drawing is the most important requirement of all technical
people in any profession.

■ As compared to verbal or written description, this method is brief and clearer.

Some of the applications are:

• Building drawing for civil engineers

• Machine drawing for mechanical engineers

• Circuit diagrams for electrical and electronics engineers

• Computer graphics

• Developing Piping and Instrument Diagram

Introduction

Essentials of a good drawing

• Should represent the concept/idea/geometry clearly

• Should be able to communicate with others with out doubt

• Should respect the manufacturing feasibility

• Should favor a lot standardization
