WORK SHEET – CLASS X – (SCIENCE) BIOLOGY

CHAPTER 5 – LIFE PROCESSES

MCQs
1. Opening and closing of stomata is due to
a) High pressure of gases inside the cells
b) Movement of water in and out of the guard cells
c) Stimulus of light in the guard cells
d) Diffusion of CO2 in and out of the guard cells
2. The length of small intestine in a deer is more as compared to the length of small intestine of a tiger.
The reason for this is
a) Mode of intake of food
b) Type of food consumed
c) Presence or absence of villi in intestine
d) Presence or absence of digestive enzymes
3. The energy released during cellular respiration is used to synthesise
a) Ribosomes b) RBC ATP d) mitochondria
4. The process in which loss of water in the form of vapours from the serial parts of plants takes place
is X, which helps in Y. Here, X and Y respectively are
a) Transpiration and photosynthesis
b) Transpiration and temperature regulation
c) Translocation and movement of soluble products of photosynthesis in phloem
d) Translocation and absorption of water and minerals from soil by roots
5. Which one among the following is not removed as waste product from the body of plants
a) Resins and gums b) Urea c) Dry leaves d) Excess water
2 MARKS QUESTIONS :-
6. Two green plants were kept separately in oxygen free containers, one in the dark and other in
sunlight. It was observed that plant kept in dark could not survive longer. Give reason for your
observation.
7. What will happen if mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands ?
8. Write two different ways in which glucose is oxidized to provide energy in human body. Write the
product released in each case.
9. What will happen if :
a) Xylem tissue in a plant is removed
b) We are injured and start bleeding
10. Write one specific function of each of the following organs in relation with excretion in human
beings :
i) Renal artery
ii) Urethra
iii) Glomerulus
iv) Tubular part of nephron
ASSERTION – REASON QUESTIONS :- consist of a statement of assertion followed by a statement of
reason is given. Choose the correct answer out of the following choices.
a) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is the correct explanation for
assertion.
b) Assertion and reason both are correct statements but reason is not the correct explanation for
assertion.
c) Assertion is the correct statement, but reason is the wrong statement.
d) Assertion is the wrong statement, but reason is the correct statement.
e) Both Assertion and Reason are wrong.
11. Assertion (A) : The walls of atria are thicker than those of the ventricles.
Reason (R) : Ventricles have to pump blood into various organs at high pressure.
12. Assertion (A) : Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth and is taken up by plants in the
form of inorganic nitrates or nitrites.
Reason (R) : The soil is the nearest and richest source of raw materials like nitrogen, phosphorous
and other minerals for the plants.
3 MARKS QUESTIONS :-
13. How does paramecium obtain its food ?
14. Write three points of difference between breathing and respiration .
15. List four functions of human heart. Why is double circulation necessary in human body ?

CASE – BASED QUESTIONS :-

16. The partially digested food coming from the stomach of a person enters a long and narrow organ A
in his body. The organ A receives the secretions of two glands: liver and pancreas. Liver secretes a
greenish-yellow liquid B. Pancreas secretes pancreatic juice which contains two digestive enzymes C
and D. The intestinal juice completes the process of digestion of food. The inner wall of organ A has
millions of tiny finger-like projections E which help in the rapid absorption of digested food into
blood stream. The undigested part of food then passes into wider tube F which absorbs most of the
water from undigested food. The last part of tube F called G stores this undigested food (or waste)
for some time. The undigested food is then passed out though opening H as faeces in the process
known as
Read the above passage carefully and give the answer of the following questions:
i. Enlist the site of synthesis and storage of liquid B.
ii. What are the digestive enzymes C and D?
iii. Why is organ A in herbivores longer than in carnivores?
iv. Name (i) tube F, (ii) part G, (iii) opening H and (iv) process I.
17. Arteries, veins and capillaries are blood vessels through which blood flows in our body. Arteries
carry blood from heart to different parts of the body whereas veins deliver blood back to the heart.
Arteries are connected to veins by thin capillaries.

Read the above passage carefully and give the answer of the following questions:
i. Which two chambers of the human heart have arteries connected to them?
ii. What are capillaries?
iii. Which blood vessels carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and from which
chamber?
iv. What is blood pressure? How is it measured?
5 MARKS QUESTIONS :-
18. i) Describe the structure and function of the basic filtering unit of kidney.
ii) List two factors on which reabsorption of water from urine depends.
19. i) Why is there a difference in the rate of breathing between aquatic organisms and terrestrial
organisms ? Explain.
ii) Draw the diagram of human respiratory system and label – pharynx, trachea, lungs, diaphragm
and alveolar sac on it.
