1. (4 pts) Which of these graphs of relations describe y as a function of x?

That is, which are graphs of functions?
(no explanation required.) (There may be more than one graph which represents a function.)

(A) (B) (C) (D)

Answer(s):
To check which graph is the graph of a function, we use the vertical line test. For each graph, draw a
vertical line. If the vertical line intersects only one point of the graph, then it is a graph of a function. If
the vertical line intersects more than one point of the graph, then it is not a graph of a function.
So, using the above method, we can see that A, C and D are the graphs of a function.
2. (10 pts) Consider the points (9, –7) and (1, 5).
(a) State the midpoint of the line segment with the given endpoints. (No work required)
Sol: -
To find the midpoint we use the formula

midpoint = ( x +2 x , y +2 y )
1 2 1 2

Here
x 1=9 , y 1=−7 , x 2=1 , y 2=5
So,

midpoint = ( x 1+ x 2 y 1+ y 2
2
,
2 )
midpoint = ( 9+12 , −7+5
2 )
midpoint =( ,
2 2 )
10 −2

midpoint =( 5 ,−1 )
Hence.
(b) If the point you found in (a) is the center of a circle, and the other two points are points on the circle, find
the length of the radius of the circle. (That is, find the distance between the center point and a point on the
circle.) Find the exact answer and simplify as much as possible. Show work.
Sol: -
center= ( 5 ,−1 )
Point onthe ¿˚ ( 1 ,5 )
The length of the radius is the distance between the point on the circle and center of the circle.
Then,
√ 2
r = ( x 2−x 1 ) + ( y 2− y 1)
2

Here
x 1=5 , y 1=−1 , x 2=1 , y 2=5
So,
√ 2
r = (1−5 ) + ( 5−(−1) )
2

r =√ (1−5 ) + ( 5+1 )
2 2

r =√ (−4 ) + ( 6 )
2 2

r =√ 16 +36
r =√ 52
r =√ 4 ×13
r =2 √ 13
Hence, length of radius is r =2 √ 13 units.
3. (12 pts) Consider the following graph. (no explanations required)
(a) State the domain. (c) State the x-intercept(s).
Sol: - Sol: -
To find the domain from the graph, we move from To find the x-intercepts, we find the point
negative x-axis to positive x-axis. So, from the graph, where graph intersects the x-axis. So, from the
we can see that the along x-axis, values of graph are graph, we can see that
between -3 and 6 inclusive. x−intercept ( s ) =( 3 , 0 )∧( 6 , 0 )
So,
Domain=[ −3 , 6 ]
(b) State the range.
Sol: - (d) State the y-intercept(s).
To find the range from the graph, we move from Sol: -
negative y-axis to positive y-axis. So, from the graph, To find the y-intercepts, we find the point
we can see that the along y-axis, values of graph are where graph intersects the y-axis. So, from the
between -2 and 5 inclusive. graph, we can see that
So, y−intercept ( s )=( 0 , 2 )
Range=[−2, 5 ]

4. (9 pts) Let f ( x ) =
√ x−5
x−8

(a) Calculate f ( 14 ). (work optional)

Sol: - Given
f ( x )=
√ x−5
x−8
So,
f ( 14 )= √
14−5
14−8

f ( 14 )=
√9
6

3
f ( 14 )=
6

1
f ( 14 )=
2
Hence.
(b) State the domain of the function f ( x ) =
√ x−5
x−8
Sol: -
To find the domain, we find the non-negative values of radical and the points where the function is
undefined.
First, we find the non-negative values of radical
√ x−5=0
2
( √ x−5 ) = ( 0 )2
x−5=0
x=5
So, non-negative values of radical are when x ≥ 5
Now, we find the points where the function is undefined.
Putting denominator equal to zero
x−8=0
x=8
So, the point(s) where the function is undefined is x = 8
Now,
Domain=5 ≤ x < 8∨x >8
Or
Domain=[ 5 , 8 ) ∪ ( 8 , ∞ )
Hence.
(c) Find f ( 9−a ) and simplify as much as possible. Show work.
Sol: - Given
f ( x )= √
x−5
x−8
So,
f ( 9−a )=
√(9−a)−5
(9−a)−8
f ( 9−a )=
√ 9−a−5
9−a−8
f ( 9−a )= √
9−5−a
9−8−a
f ( 9−a )=
√ 4−a
1−a
Hence
5. (6 pts) f is a function that takes a real number x and performs these three steps in the order given:
(1) Add 2 to x.
(2) Take the absolute value of the result.
(3) Take the reciprocal of the result.
(That is, make the quantity the denominator of a fraction with numerator 1.)

(a) Find an expression for f (x). (no explanation required)

Sol: -
We find the function in steps.
(1) Add 2 to x.
f ( x )=x +2
(2) Take the absolute value of the result.
f ( x )=| x+ 2|
(3) Take the reciprocal of the result.
1
f ( x )=
|x +2|
Hence, the expression for function is
1
f ( x )=
|x +2|
(b) State the domain of f. (no explanation required)
Sol: -
To find the domain, we find the points where the function is undefined
Putting the denominator equal to zero,
|x +2|=0
x +2=0
x=−2
The point where the function is undefined is x = - 2
So,
Domain=x ←2∨x >−2
Or
Domain=(−∞ ,−2 ) ∪ (−2 , ∞ )
Hence.
6. (6 pts) Given f ( x )=x −1 and g ( x )=x 2+ 9 x , which of the following is the domain of the quotient
function f / g ? Explain. 6._______
A. ( −∞ , 0 ) ∪ ( 0 , ∞ )
B. (−∞ ,−3 ) ∪ (−3 , 3 ) ∪ ( 3 , ∞ )
C. (−∞ ,−9 ) ∪ (−9 , 0 ) ∪ ( 0 , ∞ )
D. (−∞ ,−9 ) ∪ (−9 , 0 ) ∪ ( 0 ,1 ) ∪ ( 1 , ∞ )
Sol: -
To find the domain of the quotient function, we find the quotient function first.
f ( x )=x −1
2
g ( x )=x + 9 x
So,
f x−1
= 2
g x +9 x
Now, the domain of the function.
We find the points where function is undefined. Putting denominator equal to zero
2
x + 9 x=0
x (x +9)=0
x=0∨(x +9)=0
x=0∨x=−9
So, the domain is
Domain=x ←9∨−9< x <0∨x> 0
Or
Domain=(−∞ ,−9 ) ∪ (−9 , 0 ) ∪ ( 0 , ∞ )
Hence, Option C is correct.
7. (6 pts) For income x (in dollars), a particular state's income tax T (in dollars) is given by
{
0.022 x if 0 ≤ x ≤ 6,000
T ( x )= 132+0.035 ( x−6,000) if 6,000< x ≤ 25,000
797+ 0.040( x−25,000) if x> 25,000

(a) What is the tax on an income of $15,200? Show some work.

Sol: - To find the tax on an income $15,200, we use the following function
f ( x )=132+ 0.035 ( x −6000 )
Put x = $15,200
T ( 15200 )=132+0.035 ( 15200−6000 )
T ( 15200 )=132+0.035 ( 9200 )
T ( 15200 )=132+322
T ( 15200 )=454
Hence, the tax on an income of $15,200 is $454.
(b) What is the tax on an income of $152,000? Show some work.
Sol: - To find the tax on an income $152,000, we use the following function
T ( x )=797 +0.040(x−25000)
Putting x = $152,000
T ( 152000 )=797+0.040 (152000−25000)
T ( 152000 )=797+0.040 ( 127000 )
T ( 152000 )=797+5080
T ( 152000 )=5877
Hence, the tax on an income of $152,000 is $5877.
8. (20 pts) Let y=8−2 x 2.
(a) Find the x-intercept(s) of the graph of the equation, if any exist. (work optional)
Sol: -
To find x-intercepts, we put y=0
2
y=8−2 x
2
0=8−2 x
2
2 x =8
2 8
x=
2
2
x =4
√ x 2= √ 4
x=± 2
Hence, x-intercepts are x = 2 and x = -2
(b) Find the y-intercept(s) of the graph of the equation, if any exist. (work optional)
Sol: -
To find y-intercepts, we put x=0
2
y=8−2 x
2
y=8−2( 0)
y=8−2(0)
y=8−0
y=8
Hence, y-intercept is y = 8
(c) Create a table of sample points on the graph of the equation (include at least five points), and use
them to help create a graph of the equation. (You may use the grid shown below, hand-draw and scan,
or you may use the free Desmos graphing calculator described under Course Resource to generate a
graph, save as a jpg and attach.)
Sol: -
x y (x, y)
-2 0 (-2, 0)
-1 6 (-1, 6)
0 8 (0, 8)
1 6 (1, 6)
2 0 (2, 0)
Graph:
(d) Is the graph symmetric with respect to the x-axis? _____ (yes or no). If no, state a point on the
graph and state the appropriate reflection point which fails to be on the graph, as done in section 1.2
homework in the textbook.
Sol: -
No, the graph is not symmetric with respect to x-axis.
Consider the point (1, 6) on the graph. It’s reflection with respect to x-axis, which is (1, -6), fails to be
on the graph.

(e) Is the graph symmetric with respect to the y-axis? _____ (yes or no). If no, state a point on the
graph and state the appropriate reflection point which fails to be on the graph, as done in section 1.2
homework in the textbook.
Sol: -
Yes, the graph is symmetric with respect to y-axis.
Consider the point (1, 6) on the graph. It’s reflection with respect to y-axis, which is (-1, 6), is on the
graph.

(f) Is the graph symmetric with respect to the origin? _____ (yes or no). If no, state a point on the
graph and state the appropriate reflection point which fails to be on the graph, as done in section 1.2
homework in the textbook.
Sol: -
No, the graph is not symmetric about the origin.
Consider the point (1, 6) on the graph. It’s reflection with respect to origin, which is (-1, -6), fails to be
on the graph.

9. (12 pts) Let f (x) = 6x2 – 7x + 5 and g(x) = x – 2.

(a) Evaluate the function f – g for x = –1. That is, find (f – g)(–1). Show work.
Sol: - Given
f ( x )=6 x 2−7 x +5
g ( x )=x−2
Then
( f −g ) ( x )=6 x 2−7 x +5−( x−2)
( f −g ) ( x )=6 x 2−7 x +5−x +2
( f −g ) ( x )=6 x 2−7 x−x +5+2
( f −g ) ( x )=6 x 2−8 x +7
So,
( f −g ) (−1 )=6 (−1)2−8(−1)+7
( f −g ) (−1 )=6 ( 1 ) −8(−1)+7
( f −g ) (−1 )=6 +8+7
( f −g ) (−1 )=21
Hence.
(b) Evaluate the function fg for x = –1. That is, find (f g)(–1). Show work.
Sol: - Given
2
f ( x )=6 x −7 x +5
g ( x )=x−2
Then
fg ( x )=( 6 x 2−7 x +5 ) ( x−2 )
3 2 2
fg ( x )=6 x −12 x −7 x +14 x+5 x−10
3 2
fg ( x )=6 x −19 x + 19 x −10
So,
3 2
fg (−1 )=6(−1) −19 (−1 ) +19(−1)−10
fg (−1 )=6(−1)−19(1)+19(−1)−10
fg (−1 )=−6−19−19−10
fg (−1 )=−54
Hence.
(c) Find the difference function (g – f )(x) and simplify the results. Show work.
Sol: - Given
f ( x )=6 x 2−7 x +5
g ( x )=x−2
Then
( g−f ) ( x )=( x−2 ) −( 6 x 2−7 x+5 )
( g−f ) ( x )=x−2−6 x2 +7 x−5
( g−f ) ( x )=−6 x 2 +7 x+ x −2−5
( g−f ) ( x )=−6 x 2 +8 x−7
Hence.
10. (15 pts) (See textbook page 82 for definitions of the economic functions used in this problem.)
Company XYZ manufactures and sells widgets.
The cost, in dollars, to produce x widgets is given by C(x) = 2602 + 3.60x for x  0,
and the price-demand function, in dollars per widget, is p(x) = 24  0.02x for 0  x  4800.

(a) Find and interpret C(200).

Sol: -
C ( x )=2602+3.60 x
So,
C ( 200 )=2602+3.60(200)
C ( 200 )=2602+720
C ( 200 )=3322
Hence, the cost of $3322 is required to produce 200 widgets.
(b) Find and interpret C (200). (Note that C (x) is the average cost function.)
Sol: - The formula to find the average cost function is
C(x)
C ( x )=
x
Then
2602+3.60(x )
C ( x )=
x
2602 3.60 ( x )
C ( x )= +
x x
2602
C ( x )= + 3.60
x
So,
2602
C ( 200 )= +3.60
200
C ( 200 )=13.01+3.60
C ( 200 )=16.61
Hence, the cost of $16.61 is required to produce one widget.
(c) Find and simplify the expression for the revenue function R(x). (work optional)
Sol: - The formula for revenue function is
R ( x )=x ∙ p ( x )
Then
R ( x )=x (24−0.02 x)
2
R ( x )=24 x−0.02 x
Or
R ( x )=−0.02 x 2+ 24 x
Hence
(d) Find and simplify the expression for the profit function P(x). (work optional) Note that p(x) and
P(x) are different functions.
Sol: - The formula for profit function is
P ( x )=R ( x )−C ( x )
Then
2
P ( x )=(−0.02 x +24 x )−( 2602+3.60 x )
2
P ( x )=−0.02 x +24 x−2602−3.60 x
2
P ( x )=−0.02 x +24 x−3.60 x−2602
2
P ( x )=−0.02 x +2 0. 4 x −2602
Hence.
(e) Find and interpret P(200), where P(x) is the profit function in part (d).
Sol: -
As
2
P ( x )=−0.02 x +20.4 x−2602
So,
2
P ( 200 )=−0.02 ( 200 ) +20.4 (200)−2602
P ( 200 )=−0.02(40000)+20.4 (200)−2602
P ( 200 )=−800+4080−2602
P ( 200 )=678
Hence, production of 200 widgets will generate a profit of $678.
