II. BRIEF CONTEXT/PERSPECTIVE OF THE ACTIVITY

Our group decided to choose barangay Matina, specifically in Gravahan area,

which is prone to flood. In line with this, our objective is to lessen the garbage
waste in drainage or canals. Also, to prevent illnesses caused by the flood.

As a student who lived in the community which is the Gravahan, Matina Davao
City, I observed that the community has a numerous number of people that lived
there, because it is one of the easy access shelters for the students who are
studying at University of Mindanao Matina branch. Moreover, with the large
number of people, it is also equivalent to the large number of wastes. In line with
this, you can see a lot of plastics and a lot of disposals around the area. Aside
from waste, the location of Gravahan Matina is near the Matina River where it
can cause floods. So, in line with this, some of the students that live here are
experiencing flood, bad smell from the canals and the waste of the pet in every
surroundings. Aside from that, we can also encounter some big rats running to
the small street.

In response to challenges during clean-up drives, our organization recognizes

that inadequate waste management practices contribute to inefficiencies. The
cause lies in insufficient pre-event planning and participant education. This
results in suboptimal cleanup efforts and potential harm to the environment. To
address this, we are enhancing our planning processes by incorporating
comprehensive waste segregation guidelines and providing thorough participant
training. Post-experience adjustments involve refining logistics and
implementing stricter waste disposal protocols. The realization from these
situations underscores the importance of proactive measures, continual
improvement, and community engagement to ensure the success and positive
impact of our clean-up initiatives.

Clean-up drives are essential for a multitude of reasons, encompassing

Environmental, clean-up drives help to mitigate the negative impact of waste on
ecosystems and wildlife. Social, clean-up drives often bring together people from
diverse backgrounds, promoting social cohesion and unity. Educational, clean-up
drives serve as a platform for educating and raising awareness about
environmental issues. Psychological benefit, by being outdoors and actively
involved in environmental conservation efforts can reduce stress and promote
mental relaxation, contributing to improved mental health.

By actively participating in clean-up drives, individuals contribute to the

preservation of natural spaces, promote community engagement, raise
awareness about environmental issues, and experience positive psychological
effects. Moreover, we are gathering the residents of Gravahan community to
participate the clean-up drive program where, are doing to pick the trash around
the area, swiping the streets, cleaning the canals and dispose the excess water to
prevent spreading of mosquitos. This program will benefit the people living in
the community and the student that near to that community.
