Course Outcomes:
Describe the design process, constitute a design team and plan the product
CO1 development process, differentiate design thinking and conventional designing
process.
CO2 Identify needs of society through various tools, Formulate need statements and frame
detailed problem product development statements.
CO3 Generate ideas individually and in a group, think critically for generation of ideas.
CO4 Understand the importance culture of design and innovation in the organization.

Description of Contents in brief:
Unit 1 Introduction to elements and principles of design, the design process, attributes of the
designers and the product development team, building a product development team,
Wicked problems, Introduction to design thinking, traditional problem solving versus
design thinking, Double diamond approach.
Unit 2 Need and its identification, Methods to identify need of people, Empathy, tools for
empathy, empathy mapping, immersion and observations, writing need statement,
Problem definition, Writing of detailed problem statement.
Unit 3 Idea/Concept Generation, Various methods of idea generation, Importance of creative
thinking, Various methods of creative thinking, Analogy, serendipity in design,
Brainstorming, Brain writing, Fundamental concepts of critical thinking.
Unit 4 Prototyping, Fundamental principles of interaction of human and machine, Concept
of Discoverability, affordance, signifier, mapping, feedback, constraints, how people
do things: seven stages of action, Importance of feedback.
Unit 5 Innovation, definition, need of innovation, Stages of innovation, Ethics, case studies
of various organizations who scaled up their business with design thinking.
