MAT10NACT00012

This document outlines an activity for investigating the features of parabolas using spreadsheet software. It includes step-by-step instructions for creating and comparing various parabolic equations, focusing on the effects of parameters 'h' and 'a' on the shape and position of the graphs. The activity culminates in summarizing how the parameters affect the standard parabola y = x².

Investigating parabolas 2
This activity follows on from the ‘Investigating parabolas 1’ activity on the NelsonNet website (see worksheet
MAT10NACT00042). We are going to investigate the features of parabolas in the form y 5 1 x 1 h 2 2 and then
extend it to parabolas in turning point form: y 5 a 1 x 1 h 2 2 1 k

Effect of ‘h’ (positive)

1 In a new spreadsheet type the heading ‘Investigating parabolas’ in cell B2 and type the variables as
shown for cells B4 to B8.

2 Type in the numbers 26, 25, 24 23, 22, 21, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in cells C4 to O4.

3 Insert a Border (All Borders) around the table.

We are going to compare the following parabolas:

y 5 x2 y 5 1x 1 122 y 5 1x 1 222 y 5 1x 1 322

4 In cell C5 type the formula ‘5C4^2’, in C6 type ‘5(C4+1)^2’, in C7 type ‘5(C4+2)^2’ and in C8 type
‘5(C4+3)^2’.

5 Select cells C5 to C8 and Fill Right.

6 To create a graph of these parabolas select all the data from B4 to O8, click on the Insert tab and select
the chart Scatter (Scatter with Smooth Lines).

7 With the chart selected (eg tap anywhere inside the graph), click on Chart Tools – Layout. Use Chart
Title and Axis Titles to add the heading ‘Parabolas’ and axes labels ‘x’ and ‘y’.

You may need to format the axes scale (click on the scale numbers, then right click and the choose format axis).
For the x-axis set as ‘Fixed’ from 26 to 6 and for the y-axis from 0 to 30 or 230 to 30 depending on the graph.

8 How do the graphs of y 5 (x 1 1)2, y 5 (x 1 2)2 and y 5 (x 1 3)2 compare to y 5 x2?

9 Which way do the parabolas y 5 (x 1 h)2 slide when ℎ is positive?

Effect of ‘h’ (negative)

1 Create another copy of worksheet ‘Sheet1’ and compare

y 5 x2 y 5 1x 2 122 y 5 1x 2 222 y 5 1x 2 322

2 Modify the formulas in C6 to C8 for the above equations and again Fill Right.

3 How do the graphs of y 5 (x 2 1)2, y 5 (x 2 2)2 and y 5 (x 2 3)2 compare to y 5 x2?

4 Which way do the parabolas y 5 (x 1 h)2 slide when ℎ is negative?

Graphs of y = (x + h)2 + k

1 Copy worksheet ‘Sheet1’ and modify it appropriately to compare the following parabolas

y 5 1x 2 122 y 5 1x 2 122 1 1 y 5 1x 2 122 1 2 y 5 1x 2 122 1 3

2 Repeat the process for

y 5 1x 2 122 2 1 y 5 1x 2 122 2 2 y 5 1x 2 122 2 3

3 Where are the turning points for each parabola?

4 How are the graphs moved (translated) compared to y 5 x2

Graphs of y = a(x + h)2 + k

1 Make another copy of worksheet ‘Sheet 1’ and modify it appropriately to compare the following parabolas.

y 5 1x 1 122 2 2 y 5 21x 1 122 2 2 y 5 31x 1 122 2 2

y 5 21x 1 122 2 2

2 Where are the turning points for each parabola? How can you tell where the turning point is going to be
for a parabola in the form y 5 a 1 x 2 h 2 2 1 k?

3 How does the ‘a’ value affect the shape of the parabola?

Summary

1 Summarise how a, h and k affect parabolas of form y 5 a 1 x 1 h 2 2 1 k compared to the parabola y 5 x2.
