Free Fall Lesson

This document discusses uniformly accelerated motion, free fall, and solving related problems. It defines key terms like acceleration, uniformly accelerated motion, and free fall. It also presents the equations used to calculate velocity, distance/height, and time for objects experiencing uniform acceleration due to gravity. Examples are worked through demonstrating how to use the equations to find velocity, distance/height, and time for objects in free fall on Earth and the moon.

■What is acceleration?
■What is Uniformly Accelerated Motion?
■What are the equations used to solve
problems of uniformed accelerated
motion horizontally?
ACCELERATION Uniformly
The rate at which velocity changes over Accelerated
time; the change in velocity may be in Motion
magnitude, or direction, or both.
Acceleration of
an object that
has a motion of
constant,
uniform change
in velocity over
a period of time.

Uniformly Accelerated Motion:
VERTICAL DIMENSION
OBJECTIVES
■ Describe the Uniformly Accelerated Motion
(UAM) qualitatively and quantitatively.

■ Identify the equations involved in Uniformly

Accelerated Motion in Vertical dimension

■ Solve problems involving UAM in vertical

dimension

GALILEO GALILEI
We remember Galileo for several things:
■ He was the first to observe the
heavens through a telescope (which
he had designed and built)
■ He was persecuted for advocating the
Earth went around the Sun.
■ But he also: Was a pioneer of
physics, introducing the idea of
experiments--rather than try guess
what nature might be doing, using
logical arguments, observe what it
does do.
FREE FALL
■Objects in motion solely under
the influence of gravity are said
to be in FREE FALL.
■ The objects can be either
dropped or thrown.
Free Fall Acceleration
• An object that is having a free
fall has an acceleration of 9.8
2
m/𝑠 due to gravity. This
acceleration is uniform until it
reaches the ground. Take note
that the velocity of an object
increases to 9.8m/𝒔𝟐 every
second.

AIR RESISTANCE
■ A resistance force caused by air molecules
opposing the motion of an object as it moves
through the air.
■ A form of friction sometimes called drag.
