Welcome: Read Only Memory (Rom) It'S Types

This document provides an overview of read-only memory (ROM) and its types. It defines ROM as a type of non-volatile memory that can retrieve stored information even after power is removed. The three main types discussed are PROM, which can be reprogrammed once using a special device; EPROM, which can be erased with ultraviolet light and reprogrammed multiple times; and EEPROM, also known as flash memory, which can be electrically erased and reprogrammed without removing the chip from its environment. Examples of how each type is used are also provided.

WHAT IS MEMORY ?
Dictionary: The faculty by which the mind stores and remember information.

In Computing: The memory refers to computer hardware that stores

information for immediate use in computer.

WHAT IS ROM ?
(ROM) stands for Read Only Memory.

• Read-only memory is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and

other electronic devices.

• Data written into a ROM during manufacture.

• Data stored in ROM can only be modified slowly, with difficulty, or not at
all, so it is mainly used to store firmware or application software.

Firmware is a specific class of computer software

that provides the low-level control for the device's
specific hardware.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
• (ROM) stands for Read Only Memory.
• Data Stored in ROM in Permanent but Can be Changes with Difficulty

• Instructions for starting a device is written into ROM.

• Modifying data in ROM is not an easy process.

• Manufacturing ROM is costly (If templet is not available)

microcontrollers for smart cards
and remote keyless system.
PROM
(PROM) stands for Programmable Read Only Memory.

• This type of ROM can be re-programmed by using a

special device called a PROM programmer.

• Generally, a PROM can only be changed/updated once.

• (I.e. The data in them is permanent and cannot be
changed)
• Data is programmed into them after manufacture.

• PROMs are used in digital electronic devices to store

permanent data, usually low level programs such as
EPROM
(EPROM) stands for Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory.

• This type of ROM can have its contents erased by

ultraviolet light and then reprogrammed by an RPROM
programmer. That’s why it is also called UVEPROM
• This procedure can be carried out many times;
however, the constant erasing and rewriting will
eventually render the chip useless.
• EPROMs are easily recognizable by the transparent
fused quartz window in the top of the package,
through which the silicon chip is visible.
EEPROM/ E2PROM
(EEPROM) stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory.

• Works in a similar way to Flash memory.

• In EEPROM the contents can be 'flashed' for erasure
and then written without removing the chip from its

• environment.
EEPROMs are used to store a computer system's BIOS,
and can be updated without returning the unit to the
factory.
• BIOS updates can be carried out by computer users
