HISTORICAL CRITICISM
• It emphasized the place on examining the text itself while
outside influences on the text are disregarded.
• The essential of criticism is the authenticity and the
credibility sources being used by the historians must be
settled as to its form and content.
• There are two types of criticism: The Problem of Authenticity
or External Criticism and the Problem of Credibility or
Internal Criticism.
External Criticism
Commonly in historical sources or documents. Nowadays, the problem of
authenticity is being interfered by the technology and professional editors
that could perform the task of editing and authenticating the sources.
Designed to fabricate, forge, fake documents and to know a hoax or
misrepresentation.
Several reasons some historical documents are fabricated.
To distinguish a misinterpretation, a test of authenticity must be given
External Criticism
• Determining the date of the document to see whether they are not
anachronistic
• Know the author
• Using anachronistic style
• Using an anachronistic reference to events
• Identifying proof or custody
• Determining semantics
• Determining hermeneutics
Internal Criticism
• It focuses on the relevant particulars within the document rather than
the document itself or as whole.

• It analyzes whether the document is credible or not. Credibility means


that it is actually what is written in the document but that it is as close
on the actual or real document.
Internal Criticism
Establishing the credibility, the test should consider the following:
• Identification of the author
• Determination of the approximate date
• Ability to tell the truth
• Willingness to say the truth
• Corroboration

using primary source evidence, identify to continue
and to change, analyze cause and consequence, and
understand the dimension of historical
interpretations.

• Significant events depend upon one’s
perspective
Primary Source Evidence
• It reveals the secrets of life in the past
• Set the historical context of the event and make
inferences based on how the event happened.

Continuity and Change
• Looking for a change where common sense suggests
that there has been made on the basis of comparisons
between some point in the past and the present.
Cause and Consequence
• Causes go beyond motivations and reasons for taking
actions
• Causes must be set in the bigger context.

• Means understanding the social cultural,
intellectual, and emotional settings that shaped
people’s lives and action in the past.
• Historical perspective demands between the
present and the past

• Responsible for historical crimes and sacrifices
impose upon the people today
• Involved in meaningful story
• Learning and engaging from the past are aids in
