HISTORICAL CRITICISM
• It emphasized the place on examining the text itself while
outside influences on the text are disregarded.
• The essential of criticism is the authenticity and the
credibility sources being used by the historians must be
settled as to its form and content.
• There are two types of criticism: The Problem of Authenticity
or External Criticism and the Problem of Credibility or
Internal Criticism.
External Criticism
Commonly in historical sources or documents. Nowadays, the problem of
authenticity is being interfered by the technology and professional editors
that could perform the task of editing and authenticating the sources.
Designed to fabricate, forge, fake documents and to know a hoax or
misrepresentation.
Several reasons some historical documents are fabricated.
To distinguish a misinterpretation, a test of authenticity must be given
External Criticism
• Determining the date of the document to see whether they are not
anachronistic
• Know the author
• Using anachronistic style
• Using an anachronistic reference to events
• Identifying proof or custody
• Determining semantics
• Determining hermeneutics
Internal Criticism
• It focuses on the relevant particulars within the document rather than
the document itself or as whole.
