Flow Pattern and Its Visualization

This document discusses flow patterns and flow visualization techniques. It defines different types of flow patterns including streamlines, streaklines, pathlines and timelines. Streamlines represent the instantaneous direction of flow, streaklines show where particles have passed through over time, and pathlines indicate the actual path of individual particles. Flow visualization is used to make invisible flow patterns visible and gain qualitative information about complex fluid motions. Common techniques visualize streamlines, pathlines, streaklines and timelines to analyze flows.

Flow Patterns
Types Of Flow Patterns
 Streamline flow
 Streakline flow
 Pathline Flow
 Timeline Flow
 Difference b/w Flows
FLOW PATTERN:
THE FLOW PATTERN IS THE WAY IN WHICH FLUIDS MOVES.
• DENSITY GRADIENTS, CAUSED BY TEMPERATURE OR COMPOSITION
VARIATIONS, TEND TO CONTROL THE OVERALL FLOW PATTERN OF
THE FLUID.
• MUCH FLUID MOTION IS QUITE COMPLEX, WITH THE FLOW PATTERN
CHANGING OVER TIME.
• “FLOW PATTERN” MEANS THE SYSTEM TO BE ADOPTED, FOR THE
MOVEMENT OF RAW MATERIALS, FROM THE BEGINNING AND UP TO
THE END OF MANUFACTURING.
Flow Visualization:
 Flow visualization or flow visualisation in fluid dynamics is used to
make the flow patterns visible, in order to get qualitative or
quantitative information on them.
 Flow visualization is the art of making flow patterns visible.

 Most fluids (air, water, etc.) are transparent, thus their flow
patterns are invisible to the naked eye without methods to
make them visible.
Types Of Flow Patterns:

There are many types of flow patterns that can be visualized both physically and
computationally.

 Streamlines

 Pathlines

 Streakline

 Timelines
Sreamline Flow Pattern:
A streamline is a line everywhere tangent to the velocity vector at a given instant of time. (A streamline
is an instantaneous pattern.)
For example, consider simple shear flow between parallel plates. At some instant of time, a streamline
can the velocity vector lines such that the streamline is everywhere parallel to the local velocity vector.
In this example, streamlines are simply horizontally.
Streakline Flow Pattern:
A streakline is the locus of particles which have earlier passed through a prescribed point in flow.
For example, consider simple shear flow between parallel plates. A streakline is formed by
injecting dye into the fluid at a fixed point in space. As time marches on, the streakline gets longer
and longer, and represents an integrated history of the dye streak. In this example, streaklines are
simply horizontal lines.
Pathline Flow Pattern:
 A pathline is the actual path traveled by an individual fluid particle over some time period.
 For example, consider simple shear flow between parallel plates. A pathline is the actual path
traversed by a given (marked) fluid particle. A pathline represents an integrated history of where
the fluid particle has been. In this example, pathlines are simply horizontal lines.
Timeline Flow:
 A timeline is a set of fluid particles that form a line segment at a given instant of time. (A timeline is
an integrated pattern.)
 For example, consider simple shear flow between parallel plates. A timeline follows the location of a line of
fluid particles. A timeline represents an integrated flow pattern, since the time line continually distorts with
time, as shown in the sketch. Notice the no-slip condition in action. The top of the time line moves with the
top plate, i.e. at velocity V to the right. The bottom of the timeline, however, stays in the same location at all
times, because the bottome plate is not moving.
Note:
 Streaklines are often confused with streamline or pathline. while the three flow
patterns are identical in steady flow, they can be quite different in unsteady flow.
o The main difference is that a streamline represents an instantaneous flow pattern
at a given instant in time, while a streakline and a pathline are flow patterns that
have some age and thus a time history associated with them.
o A streakline is an instantenous time-integrated flow pattern. A pathline,on the
otherhand,is a time exposed flow path of individual particle over some time
period.
