Problem Solving Involving Quadratic Equations

This document provides guidance on solving word problems involving quadratic equations. It includes examples of number relation, work, and geometry problems. Readers are instructed to identify key information, represent unknowns algebraically, formulate equations, determine solutions, and check answers. Step-by-step solutions are shown for sample problems involving finding two numbers from their product and sum, calculating work rates, and deriving a length from an area.

PROBLEM SOLVING
INVOLVING
QUADRATIC

Guide in solving word problems.
1. Read the problem thoroughly and gather the necessary
information.
2. Identify what is/are asked.
3. Represent the unknown quantities with algebraic
expressions based on information.
4. Formulate the equation.
5. Determine the solution set or roots of the equation.
6. Check the roots.
Example 1 – Number Relation Problem
The product of two numbers is 18 and their sum is
9. Find the numbers.

Let = one of the numbers

= the other number

The equation based from the problem:

𝒙 ( 𝟗 − 𝒙 )=𝟏𝟖
Solve the equation:

𝒙 ( 𝟗 − 𝒙 )=𝟏𝟖
𝟐
𝟗 𝒙 − 𝒙 =𝟏𝟖
𝟐
𝒙 −𝟗 𝒙+𝟏𝟖=𝟎

( 𝒙 −𝟑 )( 𝒙 − 𝟔 )=𝟎

𝒙 =𝟑 𝒙 =𝟔
Check for the roots:

𝒙 =𝟑 𝒙 =𝟔
Final answer:

The two numbers are 3 and 6.

Example 2 – Work Problem

Mark and Ben finish cleaning the backyard in 2

hours. If Mark working alone, takes 3 hours longer
than Ben does it by himself, how many hours will
each boy finish the work alone?
Pointers to Remember

Work problems are referred to situations where

persons or machines work together or separately
to complete a certain task.

It is important to remember that parts of the work

contributed by all the workers is equal to one
complete work.
Example 2 – Work Problem
Mark and Ben finish cleaning the backyard in 2
hours. If Mark working alone, takes 3 hours longer
than Ben does it by himself, how many hours will
each boy finish the work alone?

Let be the number of hours Ben do the work.

Then, will be the number of hours Mark finish the
work.
Example 2 – Work Problem

Since Ben can do the work in hours,

𝟏
Then, Ben’s rate of doing the job is
𝒙

Since Mark can do the work in hours,

Example 3 – Geometry Problem

The area of a rectangular garden is 160 square

meters. Suppose the length of the garden is 4
meters more than twice its width, what is the
length of the garden?
Information from the problem:

Let be the width of the garden.

Let, be the length of the garden.

Equation:
𝒙 ( 𝟐 𝒙+𝟒 )=𝟏𝟔𝟎
Solve the equation:
𝟐
𝒙 ( 𝟐 𝒙 +𝟒 )=𝟏𝟔𝟎 𝒙 +𝟐 𝒙 −𝟖𝟎=𝟎
𝟐
𝟐 𝒙 +𝟒 𝒙=𝟏𝟔𝟎 ( 𝒙 −𝟖 )( 𝒙 +𝟏𝟎 ) =𝟎

𝟐
𝟐 𝒙 +𝟒 𝒙 −𝟏𝟔𝟎 =𝟎 𝒙 =𝟖 𝒙=−𝟏𝟎
Length:
Divide the equation by 2.
Length:
Check for :

𝒙 ( 𝟐 𝒙 +𝟒 )=𝟏𝟔𝟎
Final Answer:
𝟖 ( 𝟐(𝟖)+𝟒 )=𝟏𝟔𝟎

𝟖 ( 𝟏𝟔+𝟒 ) =𝟏𝟔𝟎 The length of the

garden is 20 m.
𝟖 ( 𝟐𝟎 )= 𝟏𝟔𝟎
𝟏𝟔𝟎=𝟏𝟔𝟎
