ESSENTIAL TEACHING
METHODS in SOCIAL STUDIES SSE 303 - Lesson 2 Do you want to be an effective teacher?
1. First, you must understand the
social studies' content at a level appropriate to that which you intend to teach. 2. Second, you must be able to translate the content. 3. Third, you must consider pedagogy. TEACHING METHODS
Low tech approaches require the physical presence of the
teacher and students in the classroom. Some research has shown that low-tech classrooms have advantages. For instance, students who take handwritten notes have better recall than students who typed their notes. They also tend to spell better compared to students exposed to spell check and autocorrect features of computers. TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES • Simulation Method (Historical and Games) • Laboratory Method (Source materials or references) • Project Method (Tangible output) • Demonstrations (Showing / Demonstrating) • Question and Answer Method • Field Trips (Educational tour) • Discussion Method (Small group discussions) • Lecture Method (for large class and abstract topics) • Problem Solving (Evaluation) • Dramatization Method (Skits, short plays, talk shows, commercial, etc.)
