ESSENTIAL TEACHING

METHODS in SOCIAL
STUDIES
SSE 303 - Lesson 2
Do you want to be an effective teacher?

1. First, you must understand the

social studies' content at a level
appropriate to that which you
intend to teach.
2. Second, you must be able to
translate the content.
3. Third, you must consider
pedagogy.

LEARNING

1. Direct Instruction (Low Tech)

2. Flipped Classroom (High Tech)
3. Kinesthetic Learning (Low Tech)
STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACH TO
LEARNING
1. Differentiated Instruction (Low
Tech)
2. Inquiry-based Learning (High Tech)
3. Expeditionary Learning (High Tech)
4. Personalized Learning (High Tech)
5. Game-based Learning (High Tech)
High Tech Approach to Learning
Low Tech Approach to Learning

Low tech approaches require the physical presence of the

teacher and students in the classroom. Some research has
shown that low-tech classrooms have advantages. For
instance, students who take handwritten notes have better
recall than students who typed their notes. They also tend to
spell better compared to students exposed to spell check and
autocorrect features of computers.
