TECHNOLOGY FOR
TEACHING AND LEARNING COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for prospective teachers to
develop and use digital and non-digital teaching- learning resources using technology tools appropriate in various subject areas in the elementary level. Further, the course will provide opportunities for students to use technology tools to develop project- based collaborative activities and share resources among communities of practice COURSE OUTCOMES At the of this course, the teacher education students are expected to: 1. Use ICT to develop 21st century skills: information, media and technology skills, learning and innovation skills, life and career skills, and effective communication skills. 2. Develop project based, collaborative plans and activities in various subject areas using technology tools. 3. Use open-ended tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and authoring tools) to support the development of problem- based or project base or collaborative activities in subject specific application. 4. Produce learning resources using technology tools in various subject areas. 5. Evaluate the relevance and appropriateness of ICT tools and resources based on the learning context. 6. Use technology tools to collaborate and share resources among communities of practice. Introduction to Technology for Teaching and Learning
What Will You Learn?
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills required of a 21st century teachers. What is Technology? • The term “technology” is broad, everyone has their way of understanding its meaning. We use technology to simplify our daily lives. Technology extends our abilities, capable of superior performance. We also use technology at work, for communication, transportation, as well as in education. • The word “technology” comes from the Greek word “techne” which means craft or art. • Technology refers to any valid and reliable process or procedure that is derived from basic research using scientific method. (Dale, 1969) • Technology is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications. Whenever we use our scientific knowledge, we are using technology. What is ICT?
• Information and Communication Technology(ICT) deals with
the use of different communication technologies such as mobile phones, telephone, computers, internet, etc. to locate, save, send, and edit information. What is Educational Technology? • Educational technology is the development, application, and evaluation of systems, techniques, and aids to improve the process of human learning. (Council for Educational Technology of the United Kingdom, as cited by Lucido, 1997) • Educational technology is the implementation of appropriate tools, techniques, or processes that facilitate the application of senses, memory, and cognition to enhance teaching practices and improve learning outcomes. (Aziz, 2010) • The Association for educational Communications and Technology (AECT) defined educational technology as “the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources”. (Richey, R.C. 2008) What is Educational Technology? • Educational technology can be explained by looking at the two major components of the concept “technology in education” and “technology of education”. (Balogun and Abimbade, 2002) • Technology in Education- means the application of machines, gadgets, or equipment to improve the quality of education. This aspect is described as the hardware approach to educational technology. • Technology of Education- refers to application of theories and laws/rules in education and related disciplines for the purpose of improving the quality of education. It is a component of educational technology that is involved in the use of systems approach to promote high quality education. Technology, Media and Learning • People in the 21st century live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. • Media refers to all modes of communication, including print and audio- visual forms and their accompanying technology. • Learning is acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals and some machines. It is also the development of new knowledge, skills, or attitudes as an individual interacts with information and the environment. Instructional System and Instructional Technology
• Instructional system or Instructional design is the practice of
creating instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing. (Merrill, Drake, Lacy, Pratt, 1996) • Instructional technology refers to educational technology that are concerned with instruction rather than the design and operation of educational institutions. (Ballado, 2012) Technology Tools
• Technology tools are tools used for teaching and learning. It
includes all teaching tools such as computers media devices, instructional materials, instructional aids, and audiovisual aids. Computer Literacy
• Computer literacy or Technological Competence refers to the
ability of a person to use computers, equipment, tools or gadgets and digital services for information processing with ease and confidence. Many people think that they are computer literate because they are using laptops and other gadgets for years, but sometimes, it is not true. Word processing software
• Create new document, enter text, and save it.
• Open and edit existing documents • Navigate in a document and perform a search • Format characters and paragraphs; work with tabs, indents, margins, lists, breaks, spacing • Create and edit tables • Control page and document appearance • Print documents, envelopes, and labels Spreadsheet Software
• Open files and use page setup
• Enter, correct, and save data • Use the menu commands • Format cells, rows and columns • Use simple arithmetic functions in the formulas • Print worksheets and workbooks Presentation Software
• Create title and bullet styles
• Modify slide text and check spelling • Select a template • Insert a table • Change text and bullets in the slide master and remove objects • Use slide show options like adding transitions and animation • Work with notes • Print a presentation Back-up files
• Computers are the filing cabinets of the 21st century. If you
don’t want to lose your work, you need to know how to back-up your files. You can use Google drive, One drive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, etc. Web Browser Basics
• Type URLs in the address bar to find the web page/s
• Clearing the browser cache and history
• Open links in new tabs and windows to hold current
information on display Social Networking Skills
• 21st century students have grown up with personal
computers specially the social media. You need to have basic understanding of how online networks work and the netiquette involved. Antivirus Software
• Scan the computer for malware like viruses, Trojans,
spyware, adware, etc.
• Know how to install antivirus software.
• Know how to update antivirus software
Keyboard Commands

mouse Terminology
• Know the basic parts of the computer system (Hardware)
• Know the terms of the applications that you are using,
especially the office applications Networking
• Determine the IP Address
• Verify physical connectivity to the network
Roles and functions of computers 1. Computers can increase productivity 2. Computers facilitate communication between students, teachers, and administrators 3. Computers are used to access large amounts of information 4. Computers are brilliant aids in teaching 5. Computers facilitate an electronic format for storage of information 6. Computers can teach subjects and enhance learning of the students Roles of ICT in Teaching and Learning • The Computer as Tutor • As a tutor, the computer teaches the learner (computer assisted instruction). The computer presents the lesson, the students responds, the computer evaluate the responds and determines what to present next. Roles of ICT in Teaching and Learning • The Computer as a Tool • As a tool, computer is needed in accomplishing a particular task efficiently such as office applications (word, excel, PowerPoint, publisher, etc.). These applications can be used in writing, research, computing grades, visual presentation, and infographics. Roles of ICT in Teaching and Learning • The Computer as Tutee • The teacher or student are the ones doing the tutoring to the computer. The teacher or student will teach the computer how to tutor, and how to be a tool. For example, the teacher will program the computer on how to tutor the students in arithmetic operations, to play educational games, to generate animated pictures, and an approximation of real-world environment through simulation. When you design and program an interactive instructional software using applications like course lab and power point presentation, the computer will follow the instructions(execute), making it a tutee. Roles of ICT in 21st Century Teacher Education
• teachers improve their teaching skills
• teachers to interact with students • teacher to motivate students and growing interest in learning • teacher to design educational environment • increase the rate of learning of the students Activity 1 1. As a teacher, what benefits do you get from using computers? 2. What disadvantages do you get from using computers? Activity 2
