Sample Space and Events

The document defines key concepts in probability, including sample space, events, tree diagrams, and the complement of an event. It explains the intersection and union of events, as well as mutually exclusive events. Examples are provided to illustrate these concepts and their applications in statistical experiments.

SAMPLE SPACE AND EVENTS

Prepared by:
PROF. KRIS ANDREW D. BORERO
Definition of Sample Space
The sample space () is the set of
all possible outcomes of a statistical
experiment. Each outcome in the
sample space is called an element
or a member.
2
Definition of Event
An event is a subset of the sample
space. A simple or elementary
event includes only one outcome
while a complementary event is
composed of more than one
outcome. 3
Definition of Tree Diagram

A tree diagram is a tool used

to calculate the number of
possible outcomes of an event
and list them in an organized
manner. 4
Definition of Statement or Rule

The statement or rule

describes the sample space
with a large or infinite number
of sample points.
5
Complement of an Event
The complement of an event with respect to the sample
space is the subset of all the elements of that are not in
the event.

Example:

6
Intersection of Events
The intersection () of two events is the event
containing all elements that are common to both
events.

Example:

7
Union of Events
The union () of two events is the event containing
all elements that belong to both events.

Example:

8
Mutually Exclusive or Disjoint
Two events are said to be mutually exclusive or
disjoint () if the two events do not have elements in
common.

Example:

9
Example # 1
An experiment consists of flipping a coin
and flipping it a second time if a head
occurs. If a tail occurs on the first flip, a
die is tossed once. List the elements of
the sample space () by constructing a
tree diagram.
