Unit III

Highway materials consist of sub-grade soil, stone aggregates, bituminous materials, and cement. Sub-grade soil is classified into types like gravel, sand, silt, and clay, each with distinct properties. Stone aggregates are crucial for pavement construction and must meet specific strength, hardness, toughness, and durability criteria, along with flakiness and elongation indices, while bitumen is tested using various methods including penetration and ductility tests.

Highway materials include:

1. Sub-grade soil
2. Stone aggregates
3. Bituminous materials
4. Cement and cement concrete
Classification
1. Sub-grade soil
Types Properties

Gravel Incompressibility
Sand Permanency of strength
Silt Stability
Clay Good drainage
2. Stone aggregates – A prime material used in pavement construction.
Properties and Testing of Aggregate:
Strength – Aggregate should be sufficiently strong/ resistant to crushing to
withstand the high stresses
Hardness – Aggregate should be hard enough to resist the wear due to abrasive
action of traffic.
Toughness - resistance to impact
Durability - property of aggregates to withstand the adverse actions of weather
Shape of aggregates – Flaky and Elongation
Flakiness Index of aggregates - the percentage by weight of particles whose least
dimension (thickness) is less than 0.6 times their mean dimension.

Elongation Index of aggregates - the percentage by weight of particles whose

greatest dimension (length) is greater than 1.8 times their mean dimension.
TEST FOR BITUMEN
• Penetration Test
• Ductility test
• Viscosity test
• Softening point test
